Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Friday, June 21, 2024.
CJ Abrams – SS Washington Nationals (wrist)
Dave Martinez says CJ Abrams is day-to-day. MRI showed a Ganglion cyst on his left palm near his wrist but nothing serious.
— Spencer Nusbaum (@spencernusbaum_) June 20, 2024
Abrams last played on Tuesday, and the reasoning for his absence was a bit confusing. It turns out that there was a cyst on his wrist causing him some discomfort. It’s unclear just how long it will take for that cyst to go away, but it would appear that he will avoid the Injured List.
Josiah Gray – SP Washington Nationals (elbow)
Josiah Gray will make another rehab start with Triple-A Rochester next week. He’ll try to stretch out to six ups and 90 pitches.
— Bobby Blanco (@Bobby_Blanco) June 20, 2024
Gray’s last outing was his most successful one yet. He threw five innings worth of baseball, giving up just two runs on three hits and three walks. His aim is to extend this to 90 pitches after his next rehab start, which could be his last one.
Gleyber Torres – 2B New York Yankees (groin)
Aaron Boone says that the Yankees were being "cautious" in taking out Gleyber Torres and he doesn't expect the injury to be anything major pic.twitter.com/tXgzclxmD7
— New York Post Sports (@nypostsports) June 20, 2024
Torres missed the final four innings of yesterday’s game as the team erred on the side of caution with regard to his status. While nothing major is expected, all fears will still be present until he is inserted back into the lineup. That said, he could miss a game or two just to be safe.
Houston Astros – Team Update
More Astros notes:
– Victor Caratini is getting his left quad injury looked at by team doctors. Espada noted an IL stint is a possibility
– Espada is hopeful Kyle Tucker can begin doing baseball activities on the field this weekend
— Casey Drottar (@CDrottar19) June 20, 2024
Victor Caratini (quad) would be just another player that heads to the Injured List as the Astros have been plagued by injuries all season long. As for Kyle Tucker (shin), his recovery has taken much longer than expected. It was believed that once he resumed baseball activities he would be close to returning to the Astros. That might not be the case any longer as his absence has grown in length. He may now need a rehab assignment, given how long he has been away. Stay tuned.
Robert Gasser – SP Milwaukee Brewers (elbow)
Robert Gasser has elected to have surgery on his elbow.
Unknown yet which type, but he’s looking at being out at least 12 months.
Dr Keith Meister will perform the procedure on Monday in Dallas.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) June 20, 2024
After seeking out multiple opinions, Gasser has seemingly succumbed to the idea that he will require surgery to fix his elbow. While the type of surgery is unclear at this moment, the likelihood of it being Tommy John seems high. Whatever the case may be, he has thrown his last pitch in 2024 and will look toward the end of next season as a chance for a return.
Ivan Herrera – C St. Louis Cardinals (back)
The Cardinals are operating on a very thin bench today. Nolan Arenado is not available. Neither is Iván Herrera, whose back locked up on him arriving at the stadium. Ryan Fernandez, Kyle Leahy, Matthew Liberatore also all unavailable. #STLCards
— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) June 20, 2024
Herrera’s back locking up on him makes it seem more like a minor injury that he will be able to overcome with some additional rest. In reality, it could have been him sitting improperly on the plane or even a bad night’s sleep. Either way, expect him back soon enough.
Kyle Gibson – SP St. Louis Cardinals (back)
Marmol said Kyle Gibson will play catch today and then check in with the trainers and they’ll determine whether he’ll be available today. If not (and it sounds like not), he’ll be in line to start Tuesday.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) June 20, 2024
Gibson seems to have avoided a major injury scare here. He could be ready to go by early next week.
Max Kepler – OF Minnesota Twins (neck)
Max Kepler said his neck "locked up" while on deck, so he decided to bunt.
"I feel like it was too late to ask to be subbed out."
And then he slid head-first because "the competitive side of me took over."
Sounds like the #MNTwins believe he'll be day-to-day on the road trip.
— Aaron Gleeman (@AaronGleeman) June 20, 2024
An interesting little tidbit of information here regarding Kepler’s injured neck. It wasn’t the slide that did him in, but rather only enlarged it. It seems odd that he felt it was too late to be subbed in, and chances are it was just another example of players trying to play through injuries. Either way, the expectation here is that he will avoid the Injured List.
Adael Amador – SS Colorado Rockies (oblique)
Adael Amador has a mild oblique strain. He suffered a similar injury in May according to Bud Black #Rockies
— Luke Zahlmann (@lukezahlmann) June 20, 2024
Amador suffered the injury while swinging a bat and running to first base. While the severity of the issue is not yet known, this may be a lengthy absence given that he suffered a similar setback just a month ago. due to the tricky nature of these injuries and the potential for a slow recovery, he may have been playing through this ailment already.
Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (shoulder)
Kodai Senga will "hopefully" face hitters next week after throwing a bullpen session today https://t.co/5WzKRHGvjv pic.twitter.com/y4ZYyM3fhw
— SNY (@SNYtv) June 19, 2024
Senga threw his bullpen two days ago, and the plan was to see how he felt in the coming days. With that timeline seemingly almost complete, it would appear that he is ready to advance to the next stage of his recovery. As a reminder, he has suffered many setbacks already this season, so expectations should be tempered. That said, this would be a big step forward for him and the Mets.
