2019 NFL Draft: Oakland Raiders Select Clelin Ferrell

With the 4th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Oakland Raiders selected DE Clelin Ferrell out of Clemson.

The Oakland Raiders used the first of their three first-round draft picks to select defensive end, Clelin Ferrell. Ferrell is a 4-3 defensive end who has prototypical size and can help against both the run and the pass. Ferrell will look to boost an Oakland defensive line that was among the worst in the league last season.

Fantasy Impact of Clelin Ferrell

Ferrell will immediately help an Oakland defense which ranked dead last in several major categories last season. The redshirt junior had 11.5 sacks in his final collegiate season at Clemson. The entire Raiders’ defense registered just 13 sacks a year ago. Ferrell also tallied 20 tackles for loss last year. His addition will be a welcome addition for an Oakland defense which ranked 30th in rushing yards allowed per game. He sheds blocks with quick hand speed and has the power to rush the passer. He should be an instant contributor to a defense that lacks playmakers at all three levels on defense.

Oakland has likely found themselves a solid all-around defender, but I do not believe this will have a major impact for fantasy purposes. The Raiders’ defense was by far the worst in fantasy last season. The addition of Ferrell (no matter how good he ends up being) is not going to turn things around right away. Oakland may be a bit better than they were in 2018, but their defense can safely be avoided for fantasy purposes.
