2019 NFL Draft: Pittsburgh Steelers Select Devin Bush

With the 10th pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers traded up to select linebacker Devin Bush out of Michigan.

Fantasy Impact of Devin Bush

The Pittsburgh Steelers facilitated the draft’s first trade when they jumped up to the 10th overall spot to draft inside linebacker Devin Bush from Michigan. Bush fits a major need for the Steelers, whose defense has fallen off precipitously since the unfortunate injury suffered by All-Pro linebacker Ryan Shazier in 2017.

After playing sparingly as a freshmen, Bush had a breakout sophomore campaign. He had 95 tackles including 10 for loss. He had 5.5 sacks, defended 7 passes, and also intercepted a pass. The numbers dipped slightly last year, but Bush was a consistent force in the middle of the Wolverines defense. He should man the middle for Pittsburgh as well.

Bush has elite speed and ran a 4.43 40-yard dash at the NFL combine. He can quickly get through gaps and find the football, but lacks the size that many scouts look for at the position. Bush has a tendency to guess where the football will go, which makes him vulnerable to misdirection plays and similar trickery. But he is compact and can run sideline to sideline to make plays.

Pittsburgh was a middling defense for fantasy purposes last year. They created just 15 turnovers, ahead of only Detroit and San Francisco. The Steelers allowed 4.2 yards per rush and 13 rushing touchdowns a year ago. Both of those numbers were right around the league average. Bush has the ability to help push Pittsburgh back into a low-end starting defensive unit this season.
