With the 29th pick the Seattle Seahawks pick DE LJ Collier out of TCU
A very Seattle pick. I mean that in the best way possible. Seattle has drafted some relatively unknown or undervalued players in the Pete Carroll Era and has turned them into absolute studs. Seattle was looking for a player to replace Frank Clark who they traded over to Kansas City. They replace him with LJ Collier, who is a powerful rusher that can bounce inside and make plays.
Collier shines brightest on passing downs when he powers his way through offensive linemen. Nothing about his frame is anything to write home about but his demeanor and play style fits the aggressive, hard-nosed defensive style of the Seattle Seahawks. He can set an edge and puts plenty of thought into what he’s doing before the snap. He’s also good at containment when runners come in his direction.
He isn’t the most athletic player on the field or the largest. He had one season of production at TCU in which he accounted for six sacks and 11 tackles for loss. He doesn’t have a lot of burst or east to west movement. At the end of the day, I’ve seen Seattle hit on plenty of these types of players and they end up leaving for more money. Was the first round too early when there were better, bigger names on the board?
Fantasy Impact of LJ Collier
This seems like an IDP Waiver player to me. Seattle does an exceptional job at developing players and putting them in a position to succeed. LJ Collier will play early for the Seahawks given that they dealt Frank Clark over to Kansas City earlier in the week and need to fill that void. Does Collier have the right stuff though? He faced Big 12 talent which gave him ample opportunity to build his stats and avoided several top-tier offensive lines (excluding Oklahoma).
If you like him, go ahead and snatch him but I’m more inclined to play the waiting game to see how well he looks at the start of the season.
