For the next installment of Fantrax’s fantasy tight end depth charts, we’re going to delve into the AFC South. I’ve already ranked the top 30 fantasy tight ends in the NFL, but why not break this down by division? Between the Texans, Colts, Jags, and Titans, you may want to look elsewhere.
Much like the running back, the tight end position is a scarce fantasy asset. It’s for this reason that my favorite strategy is to draft a running back with my first 4 picks…regardless of league style (redraft, dynasty, etc.). I aim to find value at other positions like WR and QB because if I miss on a bet at those positions, I can always trade one of my RBs for a roster weakness during the season. With my 5th pick, that’s when I take the TE. You have to hit on your TE, or else your streaming one every week. After TE10, your options really fall off. Let’s get into it.
Say what?! Your fantasy football league wasn’t hosted on Fantrax last season? Unthinkable! Check out all the features Fantrax has to offer, and we think you’ll be singing a different tune for next season.
AFC South Tight End Depth Chart
Texans:
Brevin Jordan
Jordan Akins
Sorry, Texans fans. I don’t have a Texans TE ranked in my top 30 this year. If Watson struggled making his TEs pop in the fantasy realm, I think Tyrod Taylor will have a similar issue. On the other hand, Jordan Akins has proven himself to be a solid real life tight end, but lacks the athleticism to make special plays downfield. He’s more of a possession receiver. Brevin Jordan on the other hand, was one of my favorite guys to watch in college at Miami. He’s one of those Kyle Pitts type of talents (in my opinion). It will be interesting to see how his season unfolds. Don’t be scared to take a last-round flier on Jordan, on the off chance he becomes a favorite target for Tyrod.
Colts:
Mo Allie Cox
Jack Doyle
I don’t have a single Colts TE in my top 30 this year either. Mo Allie Cox or Jack Doyle would be the targets to go to if I’m wrong, however. Actually, there’s a solid argument for me being wrong: Carson Wentz loved the TE in Philly, so it wouldn’t be crazy to think he keeps those tendencies in Indy going forward. Especially, with the coach he’s had the most success with. I prefer Cox to Doyle for his athleticism.
Jags:
Tyler Eifert
Nope, I don’t have a single Jags TE in my top 30 this year, however, Tyler Eifert is probably the closest target to crack the top 30, but I’ll pass on drafting him. Who knows…maybe Trevor Lawrence gets to the NFL and decides the TE is his favorite target, but I don’t like to make those type of bets. If you can manage to snag him from the waiver wire for depth, then you’re going to have a very nice TE roster.
Titans:
TE15: Anthony Firkser
Here we go…finally, someone you can target. Think of this situation. Julio Jones on the outside. AJ Brown on the outside. One WR will be double-teamed, one WR will get a team’s number one corner. The linebackers need to have a spy on the QB because Tannehill can move. The line is worried about Derrick Henry breaking loose for 20+ yards. That leaves two or three linebackers to keep one eye on the TE and one eye on Derrick Henry. The Titans offense is terrifying and Firkser will be a beneficiary of that. He’s an easy TE15, and a dark horse for top 10 TE this year.
