Week 1 is officially in the books, and boy what a performance by Patrick Mahomes! He finished the week as the QB1, going 30-for-39 with 360 receiving yards, a whopping five touchdowns, and no interceptions. He should be dominant all season, and just misses being the top option in my Week 2 Quarterback rankings.
Carson Wentz was the surprise of the week, throwing for 313 yards, four touchdowns, and two interceptions. The last time Wentz had a four-touchdown game was when he tore his ACL as quarterback of the Philadelphia Eagles in 2017.
Unfortunately, Week 1 wasn’t all good news. Dak Prescott injured his hand and could miss up to two months. Cooper Rush will take over quarterback duties in Dallas. Mac Jones had an MRI on his back and is suffering from back spasms. The injury isn’t considered serious, but his status should be monitored this week. The Patriots could rely more on the running game in Week 2.
Week 2 Notes
- Tom Brady didn’t put up a fantasy-friendly stat line in Week 1 in what was supposed to be a high-scoring affair. He was 18-for-27 with 212 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Look for a rebound against the New Orleans Saints this week.
- Matthew Stafford is another bounceback candidate for Week 2. He struggled against the Bills in Week 1, finishing as the QB30 with 240 passing yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He was also sacked a league-high seven times. A home matchup against the Atlanta Falcons should get Stafford back on track.
- Carson Wentz might not score another four touchdowns this week, but we can’t ignore his QB3 finish in Week 1. Wentz gets a favorable road matchup against the Detroit Lions in Week 2. He’s a QB2 this week with QB1-upside.
- There’s nowhere to go but up for Aaron Rodgers. He struggled to get anything going in Week 1, finishing dead last in fantasy points amongst starting quarterbacks. Rodgers completed 22-of-34 passes with 195 receiving yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. He was also sacked four times and coughed up a fumble. Rodgers started slow last season but still went on to win MVP. However, I’m fading until he starts to show some rhythm with his receivers.
- Marcus Mariota could be a sneaky play in two-quarterback leagues this week. He finished as the QB9 in Week 1 due in part to his legs, rushing 12 times for 72 yards and scoring a rushing touchdown. He also completed 20-of-33 passes for 215 yards. The matchup against the Rams isn’t an easy one, but they did surrender 56 rushing yards and a rushing touchdown to Josh Allen in Week 1. Mariota could surprise in deeper leagues.
