The Dolphins-Ravens game was the barn burner of the week, with Lamar Jackson and Tua Tagovailoa finishing as the top-two quarterbacks in Week 2. Jackson totaled 437 yards and four touchdowns on the day, while Tagovailoa threw for a whopping 469 yards and six (!) touchdowns. He also had two interceptions. Both quarterbacks rank as top-12 options in my Week 3 quarterback rankings.
Unfortunately, Week 2 wasn’t all fun and games. Justin Herbert suffered fractured rib cartilage at the end of Thursday’s game and was in visible pain. He’ll have a longer period to rest/recover, but his status is worth monitoring this week. If he misses any time, Chase Daniel will get the start in a favorable matchup against Jacksonville in Week 3.
The injury news is much worse for Trey Lance, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury. This is a big blow for the dual-threat quarterback who was expected by many to have a big season. Jimmy Garoppolo takes over and is a decent option in two-quarterback leagues. There’s not a ton of upside with Garoppolo, but he should provide a solid fantasy floor each week.
Week 3 Quarterback Notes
- A rebound is coming for Kirk Cousins in Week 3. He’s coming off a down week where he finished as the QB26, with 221 passing yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. However, all of that should be erased with a favorable matchup against Detroit. The Lions have surrendered the third-most fantasy points to quarterbacks this season and allowed Jalen Hurts and Carson Wentz to finish as top-five options at the position. In Cousins’ last meeting against the Lions, he threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns. Fire Cousins up as a top-10 option this week.
- Carson Wentz continues to have a rock-solid start to the season. He finished as the QB3 and QB5 in the first two weeks – albeit against Jacksonville and Detroit. But the Commanders have shown to be a pass-happy offense so far. Wentz’s 87 pass attempts on the season are third-most, and his seven passing touchdowns are tied for the league lead. The Eagles will be a challenge, but Wentz is still a low-end QB1 against his former team.
- I’m high on Jared Goff this week. He’s coming off a QB9 performance against the Commanders where he threw for 256 yards and four touchdowns. The Lions have been a high-flying offense this season, averaging 35.5 points per game – tied with the Chiefs for second-most. Goff gets a plus matchup against the Vikings in what should be a shootout.
- Tom Brady (QB29) and Aaron Rodgers (QB28) have had ugly starts to the season. The two have struggled to get much going offensively and face off this week in what could be a low-scoring affair. Rodgers has struggled to find a rhythm without Davante Adams, and the Bucs’ defense is a top-notch unit that has allowed the second-fewest points to quarterbacks. Brady’s receiving corps has struggled to stay healthy, and Mike Evans will miss Week 3 with a suspension, pending appeal. I’m fading both quarterbacks this week.
