2024-25 Fantasy Hockey Consensus Forward Rankings

We bring you the consensus forward rankings for the 2024-25 fantasy hockey season, just in time for the early puck drop in Europe.

Unsurprisingly, Connor McDavid, C, Edmonton Oilers, heads the rankings. As expected, there is minimal variance within the top five. Deciding between Nathan MacKinnon, C, Colorado Avalanche,  versus Nikita Kucherov, RW, Tampa Bay Lightning,  or Austin Matthews, C, Toronto Maple Leafs, boils down to which categories are most important – hits, shots, goals, or power-play points. If you value goals, you’ll rank Matthews a little bit higher. If you value power-play points, Kucherov might slide a bit higher.

The variance grows outside of the top five. Everyone values everyone differently. Favorites and biases come into play, for better or for worse. There are certain players you trust more than others. Likewise, certain players have burned you one too many times and that trust is gone.

One thing that you’ll notice is how our writers value veterans and young players. It can be easy to write of an Evgeny Malkin, C, Pittsburgh Penguins. As soon as you do, he bounces back and delivers another point-per-game season. Likewise, folks held high expectations for Trever Zegras last year. Injuries derailed what was expected to be a breakout season for the budding star. This year, not everyone’s expectations are the same.

Remember, consensus rankings while based on trends, history, and analysis are opinions. A lot of unexpected things can happen over the next 184 days that will impact a player’s results.  For certain players, there is little fantasy hockey consensus. This is what brings passion and excitement to fantasy hockey. How you value a player is important. What is more important is how you adjust that value in season.
