When it comes to fantasy hockey, goalies are the most unpredictable position. Anyone’s fantasy hockey goalie rankings will look much different from the start of the year than it does at season’s end. Not only can goalies be streaky, but injuries also play a major role, as going from the backup to starting goalie will significantly boost fantasy value. Our analysts came together to form consensus rankings for the top 25 fantasy hockey goalies to draft.
There are a handful of goalies I can see being the most valuable over the course of the year. However, Igor Shesterkin was my top choice with ease. He was ranked first by three of our four analysts, to sit atop our consensus fantasy hockey goalie rankings. What makes him the best option? He plays for the New York Rangers who are still Stanley Cup contenders, so the number of wins he earns is relatively safe. There weren’t any significant departures to the Rangers defense. The same can’t be said for every other goalie on a stronger team. Shesterkin is consistently among the top netminders in the league and is the safest option among the higher-profile goalies.
A couple of risers into the top 10 include Jeremy Swayman and Jacob Markstrom. The Boston Bruins have had a formidable tandem with Swayman and Linus Ullmark. With Ullmark traded to Ottawa, his ranking has taken a hit, while Swayman makes a noticeable jump in the rankings. He will get more starts as the team’s clear-cut starting goalie, giving him the opportunity to be among the most valuable fantasy hockey goalies. Jacob Markstrom was traded from the Calgary Flames to the New Jersey Devils, a team many are expecting to bounce back after a disappointing 2023-24 campaign. The change of scenery and higher-quality players in front of him should make Markstrom a great fantasy target.
Last year Ilya Sorokin was tied for first in our rankings alongside Shesterkin. Sorokin had a down year and even saw Semyon Varlamov take starts away from him as the campaign progressed. With Sorokin’s talent, it’s tough to envision him having a second consecutive disappointing season. A bounceback is expected, and while he isn’t right at the top as he previously was, getting back into the form of a top 10 fantasy goalie is very achievable.
