2024 CFF: Top 5 G5 Tight Ends Outside of the Top 24 Rankings

Last week I brought you 2024 CFF: Top 5 G5 WRs Outside of the Top 24 Rankings. This week, I want to talk about my Top 5 G5 TEs who are Outside John Laub’s Top 24 Players. My friend, John Laub, wrote an article, First Down: 2024 College Fantasy Football Rankings. In my introductory piece for Fantrax, I wrote about my love for the G5. Heck, I co-host a podcast called the G5 Hive. In this article, we’ll talk about my Top 5 G5 TEs who can be difference-makers for your teams and who are outside John Laub’s Top 24.

There’s no such thing as too much football! 2022 is the perfect time to add the college game to your fantasy football repertoire. Whether you want to create your own league or join an existing league, the Fantrax College Football Commissioner is the place to go!

Top G5 TEs Outside John Laub’s Top 24

Note: The tight ends below will be listed in the order of John Laub’s rankings and include each player’s Fantrax CFF ADP and June C2C ADP. C2C ADP is courtesy of Campus2Canton.com. Any PPG talk is assuming 1 point per reception (PPR) leagues.

(#25) Michael Harrison – San Diego State (NA/NA)

2023 Aztec starter, Mark Redman, is off to Louisville. Redman was 1st on the team in: routes ran, targets, receptions, yards, TDs, and target %. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. That was with the old coaching staff. In comes Sean Lewis. He was previously the Offensive Coordinator at Colorado, and before that he was the Head Coach at Kent State. At Colorado, Deion Sanders took Lewis’ play calling duties away after week 8. Sean Lewis brings Michael Harrison with him from Colorado, so let’s focus on those 8 weeks he called plays. During those 8 weeks he averaged 11.89 points. In week 3, Harrison burst onto the scene vs Colorado State. He  had 7 receptions for 76 yards and 2TDs. If you remember, Travis Hunter got injured in that game. Weeks 4-6 without Hunter, Harrison averaged 5 receptions for 34 yards. 8.4 points for a TE may not seem big, but TE points are hard to find. Plus, give me a break. I’m working outside John’s top 24 guys. I believe Sean Lewis has a plan for Michael Harrison in 2024!

(#26) John M. Gyllenborg – Wyoming (231.44/NA)

Based on the 2023 stats, John M. Gyllenborg will be the top receiving option returning for the Cowboys in 2024. The two receiving options in front of him and behind him are out of eligibility. That means 69% of the targets, 61% of the receptions, 63% of the yards, and 75% of the TDs are up for grabs in 2024. Based off his 2023 production and the opportunity in front of him, you have to like his odds in 2024. But wait, there’s MORE. The G5 Hive Worker Bee Series uncovered another little nugget. QB, Evan Svoboda, and Gyllenborg are roommates. The roommate narrative! Sign me up for John M. Gyllenborg in 2024!

(#34) Boden Groen – Rice (299.81/341.1)

Rice will be a sneaky team in 2024. They return 20 of 22 starters. One of which is Boden Groen. Last year he ran the 2nd most routes, and he had the 3rd most targets/receptions/yards/TDs on the team. He also commanded a ~12% target share. Luke McCaffrey is now with the Washington Commanders. That means 120 targets, 71 receptions, 992 yards, 13 TDs, and his ~30% target share have to go somewhere. Plus they bring in E.J. Warner, from Temple, to lead this Owls team in 2024. Yes, he is the son of NFL Hall of Famer, Kurt Warner. Groen’s talent, opportunity, and QB change means stock up for him and Rice in 2024.

(NA) Dominick Mazotti – UMASS (NA/NA)

Dominick Mazotti comes into UMASS via San Jose State. UMASS starter from a year ago, Gino Campiotti, is out of eligibility. That should mean this is Mazotti’s job. Last year, Campiotti ran the 3rd most routes on the team. He was 4th in targets/receptions/yards, and he was 2nd in TD receptions. He had a ~11-12% target share (~3 targets/game). The two guys that were in front of Campiotti, in terms of receiving stats, are gone. That means 106 targets, 68 receptions, 841 yards, and 4 TDs are up for grabs in 2024. I am sure some of that will go to transfer, Keshawn Brown; however, I am optimistic about Mazzotti in 2024. It sounds like beat reporter, Mike Maynard, believes that too. Check out this YouTube short of Mike. If you want to hear more about him and the Minutemen, here is the link to that interview conducted by the G5 Hive.

(NA) Jaxxon Warren – Colorado State (356/NA)

You know what LLC stands for? Yes, you got it! Let Luke Cook! You may be asking yourself, who is Jaxxon Warren? Warren is a Navarro College (JUCO) transfer. He is 6’7” 245-pounds. He had offers from schools like Oregon State, UCF, and others. Jay Norvell has a track record with some successful TEs: Cole Turner, Trey McBride, and Dallin Holker. In 2023, Holker ran the most routes and was 2nd in targets/yards/TDs/Target %. This is straight vibes, but I like the odds given Norvell’s track record with TEs. You can hear more about Jaxxon Warren on the G5 Hives’ Worker Bee Series. Please note Fantrax has him listed at Ball State, but he is at Colorado State.

There you have it. Those are my Top 5 G5 TEs outside John Laub’s Top 24. College Fantasy Football (CFF) and Campus2Canton (C2C) drafts are starting up. All of these TEs I mentioned today showed good production in 2023 and are in great situations for more work in 2024.
