Next up in our 2024 fantasy baseball Team Sleepers and Busts series, we will focus on the Chicago White Sox. The White Sox have fairly low expectations heading into the new season. Although this is the case, they have some rather intriguing sleeper options to consider for your fantasy baseball draft. Because of this, let’s discuss two of their top sleeper candidates and also discuss their biggest possible bust now.
Chicago White Sox Sleepers & Busts for 2024 Fantasy Baseball
Draft Day Steals
Andrew Vaughn, 1B
One White Sox sleeper who fantasy baseball managers should consider snagging is Andrew Vaughn. The 2019 third-overall pick took another step forward this past season on a bad Chicago team. In 152 games, he set new career highs with 21 home runs and 80 RBIs. He also ended the season with a .258 batting average. Overall, it was a solid season at the plate, but the potential for him to be even better in 2024 is there.
At just 25 years old, Vaughn still has plenty of time to improve his all-around game. Keep in mind, the 2023 campaign was only his third season in the majors, so he is still adjusting to the sport’s most challenging league. The potential to have a 30-home run season is there for him, so definitely consider him once the big-name first basemen are off the board.
Yoan Moncada, 3B
Yoan Moncada is another White Sox sleeper who fantasy managers should not ignore. The 28-year-old infielder had a tough season in 2023, primarily due to injury. However, when healthy, he produced, as he had 11 home runs to go along with a .260 batting average. It was a major step in the right direction for him, as he had a disastrous .212 batting average the season before. Now, the eight-year veteran will be looking to stay healthy and keep producing at the plate.
While recently speaking to reporters, Moncada shared excitement about the new season, as he is fully healthy. He is also motivated, as he is in the final season of his current deal (team option for the 2025 season). As a result of this, Moncada is due for a big season. Players often perform better during their contract years.
Draft Day Busts
Eloy Jimenez, DH
One White Sox player who has the potential to be a draft-day bust is Eloy Jimenez. The 27-year-old had a decent season in 2023, posting 18 home runs, 64 RBIs, and a .272 batting average. However, at the same time, there was hope that he would regain the 31-home run form he had back in 2019 as a rookie. Yet, at this time, it seems that he will not replicate that kind of power any time soon. He has not in four straight seasons since.
While Jimenez could have some value as a late-round pick or waiver-wire addition, he is not the kind of DH to bring in earlier on. There are simply superior options to work with, as several other DHs are far more consistent with their power. As a result, there’s some risk in bringing him in this season.
Nevertheless, it will be interesting to see how these three perform this season. Vaughn is looking to prove that he can become a star, Moncada is extra motivated, and Jimenez will look to be a bigger factor at the plate.
