5 Underrated Hitting Prospects
Michael Arroyo 2B | Seattle Mariners | Seattle Organization Rank #12
Seattle’s draft and development team has excelled in recent years, producing stars like Julio Rodriguez and promising prospects like Colt Emerson, Cole Young, and Lazaro Montes. Among their most underrated hitters is Michael Arroyo, Seattle’s #12 prospect. At just 5’8” and 180 pounds, Arroyo’s compact, efficient swing generates impressive power. He epitomizes a player maximizing his athletic ability and frame. The recently turned 20-year-old slashed .285/.400/.509 in 2024, with 23 home runs. While comparisons to Jose Altuve may seem ambitious, Arroyo’s combination of power, speed, and plate discipline is similarly rare for a player of his size and position. His strong lower half helps him drive the ball to all fields, including multiple homers to right-center in 2024. With continued growth, Arroyo has the potential to be a 30-home-run second baseman and could rise in the Mariners’ prospect rankings in 2025.

Angel Genao SS | Cleveland Guardians | Cleveland Organization Rank #4
Once known for pitching development, the Guardians now boast hitting prospects like Chase DeLauter, Travis Bazzana and Angel Genao, who have excited fans. The 20-year-old shortstop began 2024 repeating Low-A for the third straight year, which he took personally by slashing .341/.383/.553 with 6 home runs and 12 stolen bases in 196 at-bats. This performance earned him a promotion to High-A. Genao’s quick bat and whip-like wrist produce power from the right side and a smooth swing from the left, resembling a switch-hitting Willy Adames. His advanced bat-to-ball skills are shown by his 9.3% swinging strike rate, ranking in the 85th percentile among minor leaguers. While his raw power hasn’t fully translated into home runs yet, he hit 52 extra-base hits in 2024, including 48 doubles, which can usually indicate major league HR production. With a disciplined approach, Genao’s offensive potential might not reach perennial all-star levels, but he could be a valuable fantasy contributor.

Demetrio Crisantes 2B | Arizona Diamondbacks | D-backs Organization Rank: #13
At just 19, Demetrio Crisantes shows a relaxed setup, minimal wasted movement, and elite bat-to-ball skills with lightning bat speed. He hit .355 in the CPX league and dominated Low-A pitching with a .333 average, .429 OBP, 6 home runs, and 20 steals. The Arizona native from Nogales High could be a 4- or 5-tool player if he improves his second-base defense, where arm strength is less critical. With his talent and fast-twitch bat speed, Crisantes is primed for a big year in 2025, facing no major roadblocks in the minors. Among 12 players age 19 or younger moving from the CPX to Low-A, he ranked second in OPS (.921) and wOBA (.431), first in OBP (.429), and second in K/BB rate (.797). His elite bat speed and quick hands should allow him to handle high velocity. He also drives the ball well to right-center. Performances like this make Crisantes an underrated hitter, but he won’t be for long.
Really have enjoyed digging into ARI SS Demetrio Crisantes. Coming off a year where he hit .333 with 6 HR and 20 SB as a 19-year-old in Single-A. Love his approach at the plate. Good contact skills and can spray the ball. Doesn’t seem like a ton of power, but love the hit tool. pic.twitter.com/YTSn1q49Sl

Otto Kemp 3B | Philadelphia Phillies | Phillies Organization Rank: #28
Three minor leaguers achieved the rare feat of advancing four levels in 2024, ending at AAA. The two notable players were Bryce Eldridge and Otto Kemp, with Kemp being five years older. Without a major prospect pedigree, Kemp had a breakout season, hitting .285 with 16 home runs, 49 extra-base hits, and 20 stolen bases over 442 at-bats, moving from Low-A Clearwater to AAA Lehigh Valley. This performance makes him a prime candidate as an underrated hitter. He also earned a spot in the Arizona Fall League, where he’s hitting .289 with 6 home runs in 45 at-bats. Kemp’s approach is simple, with a compact swing and good extension, excelling on pull-side fly balls. Although his power leans pull-side, he’s balanced, hitting ~35% to the opposite field and ~25% to center. His physical tools and swing resemble a ‘poor man’s’ Ryan Braun, though with less of Braun’s elite hit tool. For non-rehab players, the AFL often serves as a finishing school, potentially setting up Kemp for success in 2025.
Lost in the Andrew Painter start last night, Otto Kemp hit his sixth home run of the AFL, and I believe his second grand slam … He’s got an OPS of 1.193 in 45 ABs with Glendale pic.twitter.com/B8yB0UjZ45

Hao-Yu Lee 2B | Detroit Tigers | FantraxHQ Prospect Rank: Tigers #7
Lee is somewhat abnormal for a 2B profile, combining a power-driven approach with fringe top-end speed. His setup and first movement are unconventional. It’s not quite a ‘step in the bucket’ but more of a hip-clearing action to get the bat head out front. By sinking into his legs during his gather, he creates natural loft in his swing. This should allow him to generate more power as he matures. In 2024, his first full season with Detroit after his 2023 acquisition, Lee continued showcasing the offensive prowess he displayed early in the Phillies system. He slashed .298/.363/.488 while posting an impressive 17.9% strikeout rate. Although his approach might be tested at higher levels, Lee has continued to prove himself at every stop. He ranked 16th in OPS and 14th in wRC+ among minor leaguers with 350+ plate appearances. Lee also hit 12 home runs, stole 16 bases, and recorded 111 runs plus RBIs in 87 games. His 10.8% swinging strike rate ranks in the 82nd percentile. This places him alongside players like Kyle Teel (10.9%), Moises Ballesteros (10.7%), and Edgar Quero (10.2%). While Detroit’s infield depth may delay his debut, Lee’s consistent bat should give him opportunities sooner rather than later.
Hao-Yu Lee breakdown:
• 20-year old infielder from Taiwan
• No. 5 in the Phillies’ Top 30 Prospect list
• 115 wRC+ in High A this year
