Fantasy Hockey ROS Goalie Rankings for 2021-22

With the season just over halfway complete and the All-Star Game out of the way, the Fantrax HQ goalie rankings have been updated, and I’ll be going over the biggest changes to the rankings thus far.

At the Top

As usual, Andrei Vasilevskiy remains the top goalie to have in nearly every format. He leads the way in wins with 25, and sports a 2.23 GAA and .922 save percentage with a pair of shutouts. He’s incredibly consistent, never going three consecutive matches with a sub .900 save percentage. You can easily start him every game with peace of mind. He’s been the top goalie for years, and I don’t expect that to change anytime soon. While not a change in his previous ranking, Vasilevskiy’s excellence is worth mentioning.

Risers

Jacob Markstrom had a rough time in his first year in Calgary, so he was ranked 19th in our goalie rankings heading into the season. It’s been quite the turnaround for both Markstrom and the Flames, as he’s climbed all the way up to 5th. Markstrom has a 17-10-5 record with a 2.20 GAA and .923 save percentage. Both are the best numbers he’s posted in his career. The more shocking stat however, is his seven shutouts. He had eight shutouts in 315 career games prior to this season, and he has nearly doubled it in just 33 contests in 2021-22. Almost half of his wins are via shutout. Considering how difficult it is to get shutouts on a consistent basis, Markstrom has greatly rewarded any fantasy manager that drafted him.

Despite being a two-time Vezina winner, Sergei Bobrovsky struggled in his first two seasons with the Panthers. He even lost the crease during the 2021 playoffs, making many (including us) think that Spencer Knight would be the better Florida goaltender this year. Knight was ranked 13th, while Bobrovsky didn’t crack the top 25. Well, Bobrovsky sure is proving all his doubters wrong. Bobrovsky boasts a 23-4-3 record, with a 2.56 GAA and .920 save percentage, and has risen to 6th in the goalie rankings.

Fallers

Robin Lehner was the unanimous choice at 2nd going into the season. With Marc-Andre Fleury moved out (who has also dropped in the rankings), Lehner was expected to take the reins on a stacked Vegas squad. While Lehner has been the clear starter, his numbers haven’t been spectacular. His 2.76 GAA and .910 save percentage drops him to 13th.

Connor Hellebuyck has been a staple in the top tier of goaltenders for years. This season has been a departure from the norm for the Jets netminder. He has a 15-15-6 record, with a 2.82 GAA and .913 save percentage. It’s been a rough year for both him and his team, but he’s still talented enough to turn things around. For now, he’ll have to settle for 14th on the list.

Things haven’t played out as expected in the St. Louis Blues crease. Jordan Binnington is seen as the starter, but he hasn’t played at his best. He has an 11-9-3 record, with an uninspiring 3.27 GAA and .901 save percentage. He’s allowed 13 goals against over his past two starts. This has led to Ville Husso getting more playing time, and thriving. Husso has an impressive 1.90 GAA and .941 save percentage. He leads the league in both categories. Keep tabs on the Blues goaltending situation going forward. It’s possible Binnington bounces back, or Husso might continue his strong play and earn more and more starts the rest of the way.
