Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Thursday, March 23, 2023.
The season is not here yet, but why not get a head start and jump in a Fantrax Classic Draft contest? Get a jump on the season with a Best Ball league or maybe a Draft and Hold. Or put some green on the line with a new season-long league to try and conquer. There’s no better time than now to get your baseball on!
MLB Injury Report for March 23
Michael Soroka – SP Atlanta Braves
Soroka felt good, was pleased with velo, particularly how hard he throw some breaking balls. Said "little rough around the edges" on breaking ball, but overall he was encouraged and all upbeat afterward. He'll likely start one of the final 2 games of spring (both are vs. Boston)
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) March 22, 2023
Very encouraging and positive post-game update on Soroka who is making his way back from multiple injuries. His velocity was in the upper mid-90s and he was mobile on the mound for ground balls. With two starts to go, it depends on how his body responds, but this is looking great.
Triston Casas – 1B Boston Red Sox
Casas (pinkie) will return to the Sox lineup on Thursday.
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) March 22, 2023
Great news as it looks like the injury was short and of a freakish nature.
Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros
Kyle Tucker suffered a minor ankle sprain at the World Baseball Classic, but Dana Brown said he should be fine.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) March 22, 2023
While the injury was a brief scare earlier in the week, it looks as if things are much better now. Tucker won’t miss much time, if any, and should be good to go for Opening Day.
Hunter Brown – SP Houston Astros
Dana Brown said Hunter Brown experienced back tightness while doing some exercises on the agility field yesterday. Dana called him “day to day” and said scratching him today was a precaution.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) March 22, 2023
This is another sigh of relief with regard to a second important Astros player. The fact that it was precautionary and during exercise drills is less concerning than if it was during a pitch. Brown should be DTD and is likely to be ready for Opening Day.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Jose Altuve underwent thumb surgery today in Houston, general manager Dana Brown said. The timeline is two months before he can resume baseball activities.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) March 22, 2023
The timeline here seems to be much different than originally expected. While it was thought that he would be back within eight weeks, it now seems that he will not be able to do much of anything baseball-related in that time. He will still need to ramp up and adjust to his fixed thumb, likely in the form of a rehab assignment. A return date of June 1 seems to be a best-case scenario right now. It wouldn’t be surprising if the Astros made a trade to help solidify second base until then because their options don’t bring about confidence.
Jhoan Duran – RP Minnesota Twins
Jhoan Duran is listed among the #MNTwins scheduled pitchers against Toronto tomorrow. He has said his leg is fine after being struck with the line drive on Sunday.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) March 23, 2023
All is well that ends well, as Duran looks to be back later on today.
Alex Kirilloff – 1B Minnesota Twins, Jorge Polanco – 2B Minnesota Twins
Alex Kirilloff (wrist) and Jorge Polanco (knee) will both begin the season in the injured list for the #MNTwins.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) March 22, 2023
A bummer for both, but understandable given the latest trends. Kirilloff has said that he needs time for his bone to heal after undergoing wrist surgery this offseason. He maintains his optimism that things are going well, just delayed a bit. Look for Joey Gallo to get some time at 1B while Kirilloff is out for most of April. As for Polanco, the team has consistently stated that nothing new has been injured. This delay is just because of soreness and fatigue. In fact, Rocco Baldelli stated too that if Spring Training were a bit longer, he likely would have been ready for Opening Day. Look for Nick Gordon, Trevor Larnach and Will Castro to get extended looks as the team tries to cover this (hopefully) short-term mess.
Brandon Nimmo – OF New York Mets
Brandon Nimmo (knee and ankle sprains) was a full participant in the Mets’ workout today. That includes hitting against Brooks Raley in live BP. The Mets are aiming to get Nimmo in games this weekend.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) March 22, 2023
Fantastic news to monitor as the weekend approaches. There’s still enough time left for him to be ready for Opening Day.
Jace Peterson – OF Oakland Athletics
Kotsay said Peterson has a bruise on his hand but should be fine. https://t.co/jezS2V2QEF
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) March 22, 2023
Great news for Peterson, who could be a late-round source for steals.
Paul Blackburn – SP Oakland Athletics
Paul Blackburn said he’s throwing a flat ground session tomorrow, fingernail is healing well.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) March 22, 2023
Great to see him pitch, but only time will tell when he returns. It’s all about how his fingernail naturally heals on its own. He’s already been ruled out for Opening Day.
Brandon Marsh – OF Philadelphia Phillies
Brandon Marsh broke a blood vessel in his left middle finger yesterday, but Rob Thomson expects him to play tomorrow. Also, non-roster infielder Will Toffey separated his left shoulder while diving for a relay throw yesterday.
— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) March 22, 2023
Sounds somewhat painful, but fortunate at the same time. The fact that he’s likely to play today or tomorrow is a great sign that he should be okay soon enough. He has been slow out of the gate this spring but has shown some patience at the plate.
Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies
Ranger Suárez will likely not be ready to begin the season. He still has inflammation in his left arm. Team sent him for an MRI yesterday. No structural damage. He’ll take a few days to rest it. At this point, it appears Matt Strahm could begin season as fifth starter.
— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) March 22, 2023
While the “no structural damage” part of this is important, it’s still deflating nonetheless. It’s hopeful that by this time next week, he is able to resume throwing and can work his way back into the rotation. He looks like a candidate to be on the Injury List to begin the season.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres
Joe Musgrove threw +/- 50 pitches on field (to batter who didn’t swing) after throwing about 30 or so in bullpen.
“Workload-wise, my arm feels good,” he said.
Next is probably a game (Cactus League or minor league).
He is targeting season’s 7th game. Padres haven’t set timetable— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) March 22, 2023
Musgrove might be the hardest-working injured player out there. He’s been doing everything he can to return. He looked and felt good during the simulated game and will continue along his progressional route.
Austin Nola – C San Diego Padres
Austin Nola doing some very basic cardio. Progression of any baseball activity resumption TBD. Sounds like would be a stretch to assume his availability for opening day.
— Bob Scanlan (@heyscan) March 22, 2023
It’s obvious that he just wants to play. The unfortunate part is that catchers wear headgear, so there’s the added element of comfort with that.
Juan Soto – OF San Diego Padres
Padres manager Bob Melvin says Juan Soto’s MRI showed “no significant oblique inflammation.”
Melvin: “We’ll see how he feels tomorrow and maybe have a bat in his hand in the next couple of days.” pic.twitter.com/lMcWR72Hf7
— 97.3 The Fan (@973TheFanSD) March 22, 2023
Once again, there’s a different timetable here for Soto. Great news that there is no significant inflammation, but there is inflammation nonetheless. “Maybe” having a bat in his hands over the next couple of days is also very vague. He seems likely to play for Opening Day, but this writer’s Spidey-Senses are tingling.
Jarred Kelenic – OF Seattle Mariners
Jarred Kelenic’s quad is fine. He and Tom Murphy will be in the lineup tomorrow. Tommy La Stella is expected to play in the field tomorrow as well.
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) March 22, 2023
The great news is that Kelenic will be back, as expected, in a short time.
Harold Ramirez – OF Tampa Bay Rays
Harold Ramirez said he is ok after getting hit w/pitch in pinky. #rays
— Kristie Ackert (@ByKristieAckert) March 22, 2023
Ramirez will need to be healthy as he is fighting for at-bats in a talented Rays lineup.
