Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Monday, April 2, 2023.
MLB Injury Report for April 3
Madison Bumgarner – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
Lovullo clarified that he was sent back for tests on his arm. Bumgarner was feeling “arm fatigue,” the manager said.
— Nick Piecoro (@nickpiecoro) April 2, 2023
Bumgarner is in line to start this Friday against the same Los Angeles team he faced in his opener. That will depend on the results of the tests that he is feeling. Needless to say, arm fatigue this early is not a good sign.
Trevor Story – 2B/SS Boston Red Sox
Cora says Story has been great in the dugout during games. He’s on the same rehab schedule but is set to start throwing in two weeks (14 weeks post surgery) and hitting in four weeks (16 weeks post surgery).
From spring, a day in the life of Story’s rehab https://t.co/3h64i6b8RC
— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) April 2, 2023
If Story is able to maintain this timeline of throwing and hitting, then it’s looking likely that he will be back sometime in August. All that said, it’s too early to speculate specific times. For now, just knowing that he is under the right mindset and is working hard is enough to know that he’s all but certain to play in 2023.
James Paxton – SP Boston Red Sox, Brayan Bello – SP Boston Red Sox, Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox
Red Sox rehab schedule 🏥
Tuesday: James Paxton in Fort Myers
Wednesday: Brayan Bello in Worcester
Thursday: Garrett Whitlock in Portland
— Boston Strong (@BostonStrong_34) April 2, 2023
Here’s the schedule for the rehabbing pitchers in Boston. This is likely Whitlock’s last rehab start before joining the Red Sox. Bello will likely need at least one more after this one, while Paxton will need a few more.
Nick Senzel – INF/OF Cincinatti Reds
Nick Senzel and Tony Santillan will report to Louisville on Tuesday
— C. Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent) April 2, 2023
Senzel is rumored to work in a utility role upon his return to the Reds. As such, he’s likely to see many different positions during his rehabbing time.
Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros
Michael Brantley left this morning for West Palm Beach, where he'll continue his rehab from shoulder surgery. The Astros hope to have him back in the next couple of week.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) April 2, 2023
No word yet on if he will need a rehab assignment. However, given the seriousness of his injury, all signs point to yes.
Devin Williams – RP Milwaukee Brewers
Craig Counsell said Devin Williams was warming and available had he been needed today, which was obviously a good sign after he took that Dansby Swanson shot off his right biceps on Saturday.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) April 2, 2023
Great news regarding his availability and that there is likely minimal residual damage after the comebacker. Other than general soreness and a bruise, Williams looks ready to roll as the team’s closer.
Luis Severino – SP New York Yankees
Luis Severino threw yesterday and today and is building up. Light throwing yesterday, came back asymptomatic today. All via Boone. #Yankees
— Brendan Kuty (@BrendanKutyNJ) April 1, 2023
It’s good news that Severino is throwing, but he is still a ways away from returning.
Carlos Rodon – SP New York Yankees
Aaron Boone said Carlos Rodón's next step is another 2-up session, which could include hitters standing in for the second part of the session. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) April 2, 2023
This is another step forward for Rodon, who could return within the next month. He’s yet to face live hitters, which is something he’ll need to do. Furthermore, he will need a rehab session in order to maintain his health.
Bryce Harper – OF Philadelphia Phillies
Rob Thomson just told ESPN when the Phillies get back to Philly Thursday, Bryce Harper could start hitting on the field at CBP, then progress to live arm at bats and then “possibly” minor league at bats 😯
Rob says Bryce is “doing really well” in his recovery pic.twitter.com/3Lac7jYUqU
— John Clark (@JClarkNBCS) April 3, 2023
That’s fantastic news, but before anyone gets ahead of themselves, they need to remember it’s a progressive process. It’s all about how his body responds to each step along the way. Additionally, each step requires multiple times for him to actually perform each activity. That said, it’s encouraging nonetheless to hear that he’s doing really well.
J.T. Brubaker – SP Pittsbirgh Pirates
We have claimed RHP Edwin Uceta off waivers from the Tigers, and have optioned him to Triple-A Indianapolis
To make room on the 40-man roster, we have transferred RHP JT Brubaker to the 60-day Injured List.
— Pittsburgh Pirates (@Pirates) April 2, 2023
Brubaker is potentially a candidate for season-ending surgery on his elbow. Nothing has yet to be solidified, but he’s not going to pitch for a while. It’s a shame after his hot and promising spring.
Joey Bart – C San Francsico Giants

— SFGiants (@SFGiants) April 2, 2023
There is no indication that this is a long-term problem. In fact, some reports have this as a minimum stay on the Injured List. Updates will surely follow.
Brandon Lowe – 2B Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays infielder Brandon Lowe (toe) told me he was “good” this morning after fouling a ball off his foot in the third inning Saturday. Manager Kevin Cash said after last night’s game he was going to get today off anyway, but I’d expect him in the lineup Monday in Washington.
— Steve Carney (@stevecarney) April 2, 2023
It was a scheduled day off yesterday, and still, Lowe made it into the game to pinch hit. He looks fine and will likely play today.
