MLB Injury Report for April 8
Michael Harris – OF Atlanta Braves
Brian Snitker didn’t sound too concerned about Michael Harris II. He said Harris would’ve been out at least four or five days, so the Braves figured they should just put him on the 10-day IL.
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) April 7, 2023
Harris was sent to the Injured List yesterday and is eligible to return on April 17. Overall this doesn’t seem like a serious ailment that should keep him out for long at all. Owners can make due for now with players from the waiver wire.
Kyle Wright – SP Atlanta Braves
Kyle Wright told me he was feeling great the day after his rehab start with Triple-A Gwinnett. He could come off the IL when first eligible to start against Cincinnati on Tuesday, April 11. #Braves
— Grant McAuley (@grantmcauley) April 7, 2023
Despite Wright’s velocity being down a lot, he felt encouraged by what he was able to do. Perhaps he was working on his mechanics and timing. Overall though, be prepared for his return later this week.
Kyle Bradish – SP Baltimore Orioles
Kyle Bradish was capable of running down the orange carpet, for those looking for an update on his bruised right foot.
— Nathan Ruiz (@NathanSRuiz) April 7, 2023
He also played catch yesterday. Things are looking good for Bradish, who aims to make this a minimum-stay trip to the Injured List.
Seiya Suzuki – OF Chicago Cubs, Brandon Hughes – RP Chicago Cubs
Seiya Suzuki and Brandon Hughes will both be playing for Iowa tomorrow
— Joey Pollizze (@joeypollizze) April 7, 2023
Suzuki has been taking simulated at-bats. It’s likely that he has an extended rehab assignment here because he’s missed so much time. As for Hughes, he’s been throwing pain-free for quite some time and will test things out in games.
Aaron Ashby – SP/RP Milwaukee Brewers, Tyrone Taylor – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Another Brewers injury update: OF Tyrone Taylor (elbow) had what Craig Counsell characterized as a small setback and was shut down for a week. Taylor is approximately halfway through that rest period and then will resume throwing.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) April 7, 2023
Ashby’s surgery was a success, but he might be out for the rest of the regular season. Things seem to be going from bad to worse for Taylor, who just cannot get himself healthy. He is expected to miss an extended period of time.
Joey Gallo – 1B/OF Minnesota Twins
Rocco said Joey Gallo has been playing through the side soreness for a few days. Didn't resolve with the off-day and they got him out of the game to avoid making it worse.
Will get it imaged tonight and said they should know more tomorrow.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) April 8, 2023
Gallo’s pain has been an ongoing issue, and this imaging will hopefully get to the bottom of it all. Expect him to miss at least a game or two while things get organized.
Max Kepler – OF Minnesota Twins
Rocco also said he's still unsure if Max Kepler will be ready to go tomorrow. They'll have to make an IL decision soon, one way or the other.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) April 8, 2023
It’s been a bizarre week here as Kepler has been out since April 3. If he goes on the Injured List, there will surely be some sort of retroactive dating happening, but a decision should happen soon.
Alex Kirilloff – 1B/OF Minneosta Twins
Alex Kirilloff (wrist) is continuing to get live at-bats on the backfield but Nick Paparesta said they're not ready to set a date for a rehab assignment yet.
— Betsy Helfand (@betsyhelfand) April 7, 2023
Kirilloff continues to be brought back at an incredibly slow pace, and owners everywhere need to exercise patience. It’s hopeful that a rehab assignment will begin soon.
Jorge Polanco – 2B Minnesota Twins
Jorge Polanco got through his first rehab game with Fort Myers well yesterday (5 innings). He's scheduled for 7 innings tomorrow, and then he and Nick Paparesta will talk about next steps.
Could be more Fort Myers, could be moving up to a higher level. Depends on how he feels.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) April 7, 2023
One of the next steps will be for him to be able to play every day, not every other day. That will come eventually, but for now, the good news is that he’ll be up to seven innings of work.
Omar Narvaez – C New York Mets
Catcher Omar Narváez has been placed on the 10-Day IL, retroactive to April 6, with a left calf strain.
Catcher Francisco Álvarez has been recalled from Triple-A Syracuse. He will wear #4.
— New York Mets (@Mets) April 7, 2023
The team made it official yesterday, though it’s unclear why they didn’t put him on the 60-day Injured List.
Luis Severino – SP New York Yankees, Carlos Rodon – SP New York Yankees
Luis Severino is up to 120 ft throwing and will have a bullpen Sunday.
Carlos Rodón will throw live BP Monday. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) April 7, 2023
Severino advancing to the bullpen is a good sign for him going forward. As for Rodon, the live BP is the next step before a rehab assignment. A return later in May seems possible right now.
Josh Donaldson – 3B New York Yankees
Boone said the Donaldson hamstring injury is “likely” an IL situation. Will make the decision later today.
— JackCurryYES (@JackCurryYES) April 7, 2023
This likely opens the door for more playing for Isiah Kiner-Falefa or Oswaldo Cabrera.
Darick Hall – 1B Philadelphia Phillies
Darick Hall tore a ligament in his thumb. Surgery next week. He expects to return this season.
— Scott Lauber (@ScottLauber) April 7, 2023
There is no timetable yet, however, some rumors have him missing two months. Either way, this is a serious injury that will require time before Hall is back in the lineup.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres
Musgrove has worked hard to get to where he is in his recovery. Patience should be a virtue here for everyone involved. That said, it’s looking like he will return within the next week or so. Stay tuned for more updates after his next rehab start.
Mitch Haniger – OF San Francisco Giants
Mitch Haniger (oblique) tells me he is just beginning to hit off a tee. Still a ways off from getting into a game. He’ll head out on a rehab assignment before he joins #SFGiants. He had his back tighten up that shut him down for about a week.
— Evan Webeck (@EvanWebeck) April 7, 2023
Looks like an extended stay on the Injured List for Haniger, who just can’t get himself better. Blake Sabol continues to get at-bats in his absence.
Joey Bart – C San Francisco Giants
Gabe Kapler said Joey Bart is doing well, could start a rehab assignment in next couple of days.
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) April 7, 2023
Great news as Bart looks to return shortly. It sounds like a minimum stay on the Injured List is possible after all.
Lars Nootbar – OF St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said OF Lars Nootbaar (left thumb contusion) will hit with the team on Monday in Colorado before a decision is made about activating him from the Injured List.
Nootbaar is with the team now in Milwaukee and will obviously travel to Denver.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) April 7, 2023
Great news for everyone involved. Be prepared.
Jake Odorizzi – RP Texas Rangers
Jake Odorizzi will miss season after undergoing arthroscopic procedure on shoulder
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) April 7, 2023
Absolutely brutal news here. Look for Dane Dunning to take over mid-relief here and receive bulk-inning outings as a result.
Luis Garcia – 2B Washington Nationals
The initial thinking on Luis García’s hamstring is that it’s not serious. Davey Martinez said he’s day to day. García was walking around the clubhouse after the game and said he thinks he’s fine.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) April 8, 2023
Consider him DTD until otherwise noted.
