MLB Injury Report for April 15
Madison Bumgarner – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
I asked Madison Bumgarner about the extra off day and he said it wasn’t a normal extra day – said he’s “dealing with some stuff” seemed to allude to a physical issue
— Jody Jackson (@Jody_Jackson) April 15, 2023
Bumgarner lasted five innings last night, but was all over the place and couldn’t keep the Marlins off of the bases. The average velocity on his fastball was down too. There’s a chance this could be something significant as he’s been awful this season.
Orlando Arcia – SS Atlanta Braves
No firm timetable for Arcia yet. The Braves will know more when he's re-evaluated in approximately 10-14 days. Castellanos spent 16 days on the IL with a similar microfracture in 2021. But his injury was to his top hand. Arcia is dealing w/ his bottom hand.
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) April 14, 2023
The difference in location could be what extends this Injury List designation since it helps generate power. That said, we’ll know more in just under two weeks. For now, the Braves will stick with Grissom.
Kyle Bradish – SP Baltimore Orioles
Bradish said his foot is healed and fine now: "No issues, 100 percent. No more bruising. Doesn't hurt to the touch anymore, so we're good to go."
— Steve Melewski (@masnSteve) April 15, 2023
He looks locked in and ready to go. There are some that believe he will start this upcoming Wednesday against the Nationals.
Masataka Yoshida – OF Boston Red Sox
Cora wouldn’t say for certain that Yoshida will play tomorrow, but said definitely Sunday.
— Gabrielle Starr (@gfstarr1) April 15, 2023
Great news for fans everywhere. Be prepared.
James Paxton – SP Boston Red Sox
James Paxton on what he thinks he needs following his rehab start Friday night:
“I feel like I need another game or two, to tighten things up. It’s been a long time since I’ve competed. It feels good to be out there, I felt like I really made some good steps in the right…
— Chris Henrique (@ChrisHenrique) April 15, 2023
Paxton will likely make one more rehab start and then the team will look into getting him into their rotation.
Brayan Bello – SP Boston Red Sox
Brayan Bello will make his season debut on Patriots Day against the Angels, says Alex Cora. pic.twitter.com/kXNEq8kuPl
— Boston Sports Gordo (@BOSSportsGordo) April 14, 2023
Bello looked great during his rehab. This might push Houck out of the rotation. Be prepared.
Trevor Story – 2B Boston Red Sox
Trevor Story has started to play catch, says Alex Cora.
This is a big step in his road back from elbow surgery. Things are on track. pic.twitter.com/d6Hp5eoXwW
— Boston Sports Gordo (@BOSSportsGordo) April 14, 2023
This doesn’t necessarily change the timeline, but rather it’s a note of a significant next step. He’s still months away from returning.
Tim Anderson – SS Chicago White Sox
Rick Hahn said Tim Anderson is trending toward the early side of his 2-4 week projection for returning from his sprained knee. Anderson is going to be away from the team for the next two days attending to a personal matter.
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) April 14, 2023
Great news that he is looking like an early return from his knee injury. Wishing him well with regard to the personal matter.
Yoan Moncada – 3B Chicago White Sox
Moncada got an MRI on Monday. Hahn didn’t have a specific timeline for his return, but that they hope he can be part of the next road trip. Moncada will be eligible to return on April 21, which is the first day of their series in Tampa
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) April 14, 2023
Moncada and the team are looking like the 21st will be ready for his return. While that’s still a week away, anything can change before then. All that being said, it doesn’t sound concerning.
Elehuris Montero – 3B Colorado Rockies
#Rockies 3B Elehuris Montero, out of the lineup for the third straight game with a sore right thumb, hit in the batting cage today. He is doing full pregame on-field activities (batting practice, etc.) and could be in tomorrow's lineup.
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) April 15, 2023
It’s looking like Montero’s return is imminent. Any day now, he should be slotted back into the Rockies’ lineup.
Austin Meadows – OF Detroit Tigers
Tigers outfielder Austin Meadows, on the IL with anxiety, was back in the clubhouse today and will go through on-field practice with his teammates before the game.
A.J. Hinch said there's no firm plan. "He's going to do as much as he feels like he can do."
— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) April 14, 2023
It’s great to see that the team is on the same page as Meadows. Support here is key as mental health and wellness are no joke.
Michael Lorenzen – SP Detroit Tigers
Tigers medical update:
Beau Brieske will throw a bullpen next week
Michael Lorenzen starts Saturday against the Giants
Matt Manning will not need surgery for his foot fracture pic.twitter.com/w9xPZ2rohS
— Cody Stavenhagen (@CodyStavenhagen) April 14, 2023
Be prepared.
Chas McCormick – OF Houston Astros
Chas McCormick left the game with "vision issues," the team said.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) April 15, 2023
McCormick has had a tremendous start to the season. There is speculation that these vision issues were a result of crashing into a wall. That said, nothing is solidified just yet.
Jared Walsh – 1B Los Angeles Angels
Jared Walsh completed his treatment for insomnia and headaches in Utah and is back home. He'll start ramping up soon and Phil Nevin said they'll hopefully know more about a timeline by the middle of next week.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) April 14, 2023
Walsh has struggled to stay healthy, but this seems like a step in the right direction. He will likely need a lengthy rehab outing in order to get himself into game shape.
Will Smith – C Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts said Will Smith isn’t in tonight’s lineup due to an illness.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) April 14, 2023
Consider Smith DTD while he recovers, though he may need the weekend to do so.
Jorge Soler – OF Miami Marlins
Skip Schumaker said Jorge Soler had lower back tightness, which is why Jesus Sanchez pinch-hit in the 7th.
"When anything happens like that, it's just 'Stop.' I'm not going to try to push through stuff like that. … He said he could go, but it didn't make much sense."#Marlins
— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) April 15, 2023
Consider Soler DTD for now, and tomorrow he will see how his body responds. He’s likely out of the lineup today in order to get some extra rest.
Jesse Winker – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Jesse Winker, meanwhile, is feeling much better and trending toward a return to the lineup tomorrow.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) April 14, 2023
Winker has missed games all week due to an illness but apparently feels better. Be prepared.
Brandon Woodruff – SP Milwaukee Brewers
Brandon Woodruff had an MRI in Arizona on Wednesday, Craig Counsell said. Woodruff remains shut down until the doctors can determine how to best proceed.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) April 14, 2023
This is sounding like it’s a significant injury. Woodruff has been on the Injured List since April 11, and it’s not looking like he will be back within the fifteen-day threshold. Fantasy owners may want to make other plans at starting pitching while this gets itself sorted out.
Adrian Houser – SP/RP Milwaukee Brewers
Adrian Houser's first rehab start for the Nashville Sounds went the planned two innings: 2.0ip, 2h, 2bb, 2k. He threw 30 pitches, 18 strikes.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) April 15, 2023
Houser has been out for a while with a groin injury. The team will likely want cleaner innings before calling him back up, but it’s encouraging that he pitched.
Joey Gallo – 1B Minnesota Twins
Joey Gallo has to settle for a double after he's inches away from a first at-bat homer in his first rehab at bat with the Saints. pic.twitter.com/BhZv7Sh7kg
— Twins Farm Report (@TwinsFarmReport) April 14, 2023
Gallo hitting in his rehab assignment, as he aims to return after a ten-day window.
Alex Kirilloff – 1B Minnesota Twins
Alex Kirilloff lines an opposite-field home run into the bar seats in LF in Clearwater. Good-looking swing against a left-hander
EV – 98.5 mph
Angle – 28 degrees— John Vittas (@JohnVittas3) April 13, 2023
Kirilloff generating power with his wrist is a great sign, even if it’s at Low-A ball.
DJ LeMahieu – INF New York Yankees
DJ LeMahieu said he expects to be full go tomorrow. Also doesn't think the quad has anything to do with his toe/foot. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) April 14, 2023
Great news that LeMahieu’s old foot injury isn’t coming back at all. Be prepared.
J.D. Davis – 3B San Francisco Giants
JD Davis doesn’t have a structural injury or any kind – he has a bad raspberry on his leg he aggravated with that skidding over the head catch.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) April 15, 2023
Davis will likely miss today’s game and be labeled as DTD since it’s a bruise and nothing more.
Joc Pederson – OF San Francisco Giants
Pederson’s possible IL candidate with a wrist injury.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) April 15, 2023
Pederson apparently received a cortisone shot in order to help alleviate the pain and avoid the Injured List. Time will tell if things improve, but consider him DTD for now.
Robbie Ray – SP Seattle Mariners
Robbie Ray "looks good, feels good" and will be re-evaluated on his left flexor strain on Monday, per Scott Servais. If all goes well then, he could begin mapping out a throwing program.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) April 15, 2023
Ray apparently looks and feels good, so the likelihood of a throwing program being developed is high. That said, look for the official word after the weekend.
Adam Wainwright – SP St. Louis Cardinals
He was at three innings/45 pitches today and said he feels like he could knock out 75 his next time out. “And that oughta be seven innings, right?”
(That would be awfully aggressive. Two rehab starts seems like a certainty, probably three.)
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) April 14, 2023
The conservative guess would be three rehab starts, as Wainwright hasn’t pitched and he’s quite old for a starter. Look for him back soon enough, but expectations should be tempered.
Jeffrey Springs – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Though #Rays are seeking additional opinions on the exact diagnosis of Springs’ arm/elbow injury, he is expected to be out a minimum of two months, and it is considered to be more than a nerve issue. If it is something that requires surgery he could be out much longer.
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) April 14, 2023
The news so far has not been kind for the outlook of Springs. The fact that it’s more than a nerve issue is concerning, which could lead to a significant absence. Owners need to come to the realization that he may not pitch again this season, as second opinions aren’t usually for a good reason.
Jose Berrios – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Schneider says he expects Berrios to make his next start. #BlueJays
— Mitch Bannon (@MitchBannon) April 15, 2023
Berrios took a comeback off of his knee, and there was some concern about a major injury. For now, it looks to be okay.
