MLB Injury Report
Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds
David Bell said it’ll be a spot start for Levi Stoudt. That allows them to push Hunter Greene back a day.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) April 18, 2023
Greene will get an extra day’s rest because of the spot start by Stoudt. Be prepared.
Amed Rosario – SS Cleveland Guardians
Amed Rosario went back to Cleveland yesterday to get an MRI on his back, which came back fine. They're unsure if he'll be available today or tomorrow (sounds doubtful) and the hope is he'll be ready to return to the lineup Friday. Tyler Freeman's here in the meantime.
— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) April 18, 2023
The aching back that was supposed to be DTD will essentially be a week’s worth of injury time missed. Still, the most important part of all of this is that Rosario seems to be on track to return without an Injury List designation.
Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros
Michael Brantley is facing live pitching. Dana Brown says he will begin a rehab assignment with AAA on the 23rd.
— Julia Morales (@JuliaMorales) April 18, 2023
Great to hear that Brantley will finally enter the final stage of his comeback bid. It will likely be a lengthy rehab outing, given the severity of his injury and the amount of time missed.
Chas McCormick – OF Houston Astros
McCormick’s IL stint is backdated so the soonest he could come off and be available to play is Tuesday in Tampa
— Danielle Lerner (@danielle_lerner) April 18, 2023
This is somewhat of a surprise since there was no mention of a back injury at all. This will hopefully give McCormick the time he needs to recover from both ailments.
Daniel Hudson – RP Los Angeles Dodgers
Daniel Hudson was transferred to the 60-day IL to make a 40-man spot for Luke Williams. So that means he won’t be eligible to return until June.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) April 18, 2023
Hudson hasn’t been able to recover quite the way he had hoped, so an extended time off will hopefully help. He won’t be back until at least June.
Will Smith – C Los Angeles Dodgers
Smith still has a few boxes to check. He will not be activated on Thursday. #Dodgers
— David Vassegh (@THEREAL_DV) April 18, 2023
There was no mention of the boxes that need to be checked, but the hope is that he returns this weekend. There are no guarantees of that as this mysterious illness came out of nowhere.
Mookie Betts – OF Los Angeles Dodgers
Dave Roberts said Mookie Betts will be in the lineup tomorrow — maybe at shortstop.
— Jorge Castillo (@jorgecastillo) April 18, 2023
Congratulations first to the Betts family. As for his shortstop designation, that would only enhance his already incredible value.
Luis Urias – INF Milwaukee Brewers
Brewers have claimed RHP JB Bukauskas off waivers from Seattle.
Luis Urias transferred to the 60-day IL.
Bukauskas was a 2017 first-round pick of the Astros (15th overall) and has made 22 relief appearances in the majors since 2021.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) April 18, 2023
After injuring himself on Opening Day, the diagnosis was six-to-eight weeks. This move looks as if that later timeline might be the one to come true.
Corbin Burnes – SP Milwaukee Brewers
Corbin Burnes is extremely encouraged by how he feels today. He thinks it’s more of a sore sternum than the pec muscle, which he considers a plus. He plans to play catch tomorrow, at which point he believes he’ll know if his next start is indeed a go on schedule.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) April 18, 2023
Burnes was all smiles while speaking to the media the day after. The plan looks like a solid one to get him back into the rotation in no time. For now, consider him DTD with not much doubt of making his next start.
Adrian Houser – SP/RP Milwaukee Brewers
Adrian Houser works 3 innings as planned on his second @nashvillesounds rehab outing for the #Brewers. 59 pitches (37 strikes) after throwing 30 on Friday. Jacksonville leads 2-0 heading to the 4th.
— Jeff Hem 🗣🎙🎧 (@JeffHemPBP) April 18, 2023
Houser is working his way up to a multi-inning relief role and seems to be on track to do so soon. It’s unclear as to when, but it’s likely within days, not weeks.
Garrett Mitchell – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Looking like a shoulder subluxation for Garrett Mitchell suffered on that slide into third in the 10th.
No idea yet on severity. He will travel back to Milwaukee with the team tomorrow. Mitchell is getting treatment currently so we won’t get word from until the morning.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) April 19, 2023
Not great, as he left the game after making a throw a half-inning after that slide. There will be more details soon.
Joey Gallo – 1B/OF Minnesota Twins
Joey Gallo (intercostal) is with the team in Boston and Rocco Baldelli said he thinks he'll be active and ready to play tomorrow.
— Betsy Helfand (@betsyhelfand) April 18, 2023
Be prepared.
Jorge Polanco – 2B Minnesota Twins, Alex Kirilloff – 1B Minnesota Twins
Jorge Polanco (knee) and Alex Kirilloff (wrist) have moved their rehab assignments to Triple-A St. Paul.
They're batting back-to-back in the @StPaulSaints lineup tonight.
Polanco starting at second base and batting second.
Kirilloff starting at first base and batting third.
— Aaron Gleeman (@AaronGleeman) April 18, 2023
Both Polanco and Kirilloff are getting that much closer to a return to the Twins. They will likely take over their respective roles in the lineup once they’re back. No timeline yet for when this will happen, but it’s close.
Justin Verlander – SP New York Mets
The five-day plan for Verlander will delay his return to the team. The plan for him is as follows: a bullpen session and then a live batting practice session on Sunday, followed by a rehab assignment next Friday (April 28). With this plan in place, even if everything goes according to plan, the earliest for a return would be the beginning of May.
Josh Donaldson – 3B New York Yankees
Aaron Boone said Josh Donaldson still had some tightness. They’ll see where he’s at tomorrow in terms of coming back up.
— Chris Kirschner (@ChrisKirschner) April 19, 2023
It’s discouraging that he is still feeling tightness in his hamstring. The team would be wise to take things slowly with Donaldson, so the next few days will be crucial.
Giancarlo Stanton – DH New York Yankees
Aaron Boone on Giancarlo Stanton: “We’re hoping we get him back in six weeks.”
— Bryan Hoch (@BryanHoch) April 18, 2023
With Stanton gone for six weeks, one has to wonder if a returning Donaldson would get DH opportunities for the team, given his injury concerns. Still, it’s a big blow to a team that could use his power.
Ramon Laureano – OF Oakland Athletics
Ramón Laureano has a tight right hamstring; he is available off the bench but the A’s are hoping to prevent it getting worse, Kotsay said.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) April 18, 2023
Consider Laureano DTD, though he has missed two games in a row now.
Bryce Harper – DH Philadelphia Phillies, Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies
Ranger Suarez will throw 20-25 pitches off the mound in Chicago in about an hour. Bryce Harper will be in the box for most of them, his first live look at a lefty during his rehab.
— Corey Seidman (@CSeidmanNBCS) April 18, 2023
Suarez will throw live BP to the other, and both will get their first looks at a lefty vs lefty situation. It’s a nice progression for both who aim to return, albeit at different times. Suarez is a lot closer to a return than Harper.
Joe Musgrove – SP San Diego Padres
Joe Musgrove will make his season debut Saturday at Chase Field. Yu Darvish will pitch Sunday.
— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) April 18, 2023
Be prepared.
Alex Wood – SP San Francisco Giants
Gabe Kapler says IL is likely for Wood https://t.co/5jvI3H7bSG
— Evan Webeck (@EvanWebeck) April 19, 2023
Awful news as Wood injured himself fielding a bunt. It’s just another problem for the team to fix, as the Giants are already in a tough spot.
Andres Munoz – RP Seattle Mariners
Robbie Ray won’t start throwing till next week. Andrés Munoz will start throwing off the mound today and will start a rehab soon.
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) April 18, 2023
No word yet on when the rehab will start, or with which affiliate. The earliest that Munoz can return is this Sunday.
Robbie Ray – SP Seattle Mariners
Robbie Ray isn’t quite ready to begin a throwing program after being re-evaluated yesterday, but he says the progression on his left flexor strain has been good.
He’ll undergo another MRI later this week.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) April 18, 2023
Not the best news, though Ray was expected to miss around one month of action. Still, the team and owners were hoping for better news. For now, they can take solace in knowing that his progression has been good, though slow.
Brendan Donovan – INF St. Louis Cardinals
Brendan Donovan was scratched with a left shin abrasion, #STLCards PR said.
— Daniel Guerrero (@TheDanGuerrero) April 18, 2023
Donovan is DTD with this minor issue.
Jeffrey Springs – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Updated breaking #Rays news: Springs expected to have Tommy John surgery, will be sidelined into 2024 season https://t.co/JTL2zkaRDP
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) April 18, 2023
This makes him gone until late into the 2024 season and unlikely to be someone to be used in fantasy until the start of the 2025 season. Just awful news.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Great news as owners can start to project their rosters and make room for him. Still, that’s about a month away, but at least the light at the end of the tunnel.
Jose Siri – OF Tampa Bay Rays
Siri is getting better, but he will need a rehab outing before returning. Great news, but don’t expect him back until he spends some time in the minor leagues.
Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers
DeGrom says he feels better than he did on Monday and fully anticipates making next start. He was encouraged
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) April 18, 2023
Fantastic news. There was some fear that deGrom would miss some time with wrist soreness, but those worries seem to be alleviated. Stay tuned.
