Top Hitting Prospects in Double-A
AA Southern League
Owen Caissie, OF CHC
The Chicago Cubs seem to be taking an aggressive approach with their prospects, assigning players like Owen Caissie to advanced competition and so far the results are encouraging. Owen Caissie was a darling for team Canada in the WBC and has taken that success and applied it to his assignment at AA Tennessee to start the season. Currently, Caissie is slashing .313/.411/.667 with four home runs, 14 RBIs, and two stolen bases in 14 games played. No doubt the walk rate is something to behold sitting at 14.4% but the alarming 50% strikeout rate is a big cause for concern.
🚀CHC OF Owen Caissie has been on a tear for AA Tennessee Smokies slashing .313/.411/.667 with 4 HR, 14 RBIs and 2 SB in 14 GP. A strong 14.3% walk rate is encouraging for the 20 year old! Let’s just get those Ks ⬇️ #NextStartsHere @smokiesbaseball @owen_caissie @Cubs @CubsZone https://t.co/cCSz0OZCoM

The 20-year-old Caissie has struggled with the strikeout rate in his short time in the minor leagues averaging 29.46% prior to this season. The power looks to be developing steadily for Caissie and he could project as a 25-30 home run bat as he continues to gain strength. I will continue to keep my eye on the production of Caissie as well as his strikeout rate as the season moves forward.
AA Texas League
Yunior Severino, 2B/3B MIN
Now if you followed me on Twitter over the off-season, you saw my post about Yunior Severino and his excellent 2022 season. Severino slashed .278/.368/.534 with 19 home runs, 17 doubles, and 65 RBIs in 83 games across A+ and AA. The strikeout rate climbed once Severino got to AA in 2022 but still averaged 26.25% while the walk rate remained solid averaging 10.95%.
💥 MIN 2B/3B Yunior Severino continues to mash in AA Wichita. Yunior is slashing .279/.392/.651 with 5 HR and 9 RBI in 12 GP. Keep your eyes on him this season! #MNTwins @WindSurgeICT @Twins @Fantrax https://t.co/VNIFaZdUzp

Now at 23 years old, Severino was assigned to AA Wichita and has continued to crush the ball. In 12 games, Severino has a .279/.392/.651 slash with 5 home runs and 9 RBIs all while increasing his walk rate to 11.8% in 51 plate appearances. His 39.2% strikeout rate is a concern as he has been a career 26.38% strikeout hitter. Keep your eyes on Yunior Severino as he could be a nice stash prospect in deep leagues.
Jorbit Vivas, 3B LAD
Player development has been a main focus for the Dodgers for decades and Jorbit Vivas is another example of superb scouting and player development. Over the last three seasons, Vivas has had strong production as he has moved through the Dodgers system. In 2022 Vivas played the entire season in A+ Great Lakes where he slashed .269/.374/.401 with 10 home runs, 19 doubles, 7 triples, 73 runs, and two stolen bases in 128 games played. With an extremely low strikeout rate of 10.2% and a walk rate of 11.1% you can’t help but like the potential of Jorbit Vivas.
👀 Look at that swing! LAD 2B/3B Jorbit Vivas has been on another level! .391/.473/.766 slash with 4 HR, 10 2B, 14 R and 3 SB in only 16 GP! 12.2% BB and 17.6% K?? Get him on your dynasty teams now! #HereToPlay @Jorbit13 @TulsaDrillers @Dodgers @DodgersNation @Fantrax https://t.co/khkOZXxbhj

Now at 22 years old, Jorbit Vivas was assigned to AA Tulsa where he has been tearing the cover off the ball. Vivas is currently slashing .391/.473/.766 with four home runs, 10 doubles, 14 runs, and 3 stolen bases in only 16 games played! Don’t worry, the walk rate is strong at 12.2% and the strikeout rate is a bit higher than in 2022 but still solid at 17.6%. Jorbit Vivas needs to be high on your priority list to acquire in deeper dynasty leagues. These numbers have proved to be sustainable in his climb though the minor leagues and only look to improve as he continues to put on good muscle weight in the power side of his game.
AA Eastern League
Colt Keith, 2B/3B DET
The Detroit Tigers have been aggressively moving Colt Keith through the organizational ladder with the Tigers assigning Keith to AA Erie to start the season. The former two-way player has had an up arrow next to his name since his debut in 2021. Last season Keith ttook a big step forward at A+ West Michigan, slashing .301/.370/.544 with 26 XBH, nine home runs, 31 RBIs, and four stolen bases in 48 games played. With a solid 19.4% strikeout rate and 10.2% walk rate Keith has displayed the plate discipline he was known for as an advanced high school bat.
💣 💥 What do you know about DET 3B/2B Colt Keith? At AA Erie slashing.339/.408/.548 with 3 HR and 11 RBIs in only the first 15 GP. 8.5% BB and a 22.5% k rate rounds out a player with a big 🆙 next to his name! #RepDetroit @erie_seawolves @tigers @tigersMLreport @Fantrax https://t.co/rvCpozvz3e
— Richard Haake (@Mustbethehawk) April 26, 2023
Now at AA Erie Keith is slashing .339/.408/.548 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in his first 15 games. Plate discipline has still been good for the 21-year-old as the strikeout rate is slightly elevated from last season, currently sitting at 22.5% K% and the walk rate slightly dipped to 8.5%. Despite the small rise in strikeout rate and fall in walk rate it’s encouraging to see Keith adapt in real time to advanced AA pitching.
