Ramon Urias – INF Baltimore Orioles
Hyde said Urias hamstring is better but timetable still 2-3 weeks #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) May 12, 2023
Urias suffered the injury almost a week ago and was placed on the Injured List on Thursday. Jorge Mateo will take over at shortstop in the meantime.
Boston Red Sox – Team Update
Pre-game notes:
– Story started hitting, he's in Fort Myers following the birth of his baby and has continued workouts there
-Joely Rodriguez has antoher up/down in Portland tomorrow, should be activated Monday
-Whitlock starts Tuesday in Worcester, will need one more after that— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) May 12, 2023
-Duvall got his cast off, he's been tracking pitches and staying in shape but no baseball activities yet
-Crawford got off the mound in Atlanta and should be activated by next weekend
-Arroyo hasn't taken grounders yet but is swinging the bat— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) May 12, 2023
-Meant to add to this update that Mondesi had a check up in Boston last week, all was ok, but he's still not doing much more than ramping up, no games yet
— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) May 12, 2023
This is a ton of information, so let’s go through most of these one by one. First, congratulations to the Story family on the arrival of their child. It’s great to see that he is hitting, which has also been added to his throwing program. He still has a long way to go before a return, but his progression is continuous. Whitlock will need at least two rehab outings, but he’s getting close to a return. This is much better for him than what was originally believed. It’s great to see Duvall tracking pitches, but he’s also a ways away from returning. Kutter Crawford still needs another week, but the team will be taking things slowly. He has been solid in the past and will be activated in about a week. Arroyo will need to take grounders before any idea of a return is estimated. As for Mondesi, the good news is that the check-up came back clean and he looks close to being healthy. Unfortunately, it will be a while before we see him play in a Boston uniform.
Nico Hoerner – 2B Chicago Cubs, Brandon Hughes – RP Chicago Cubs
Cubs roster moves:
Nico Hoerner has been put on the 10-day IL with a left hamstring strain, retro to Tuesday.
Miles Mastrobuoni recalled from Iowa.
Brandon Hughes activated from the IL.
Javier Assad optioned to Triple A.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) May 12, 2023
Hoerner will miss about a week’s time with the hamstring strain that he suffered a few days ago. Christopher Morel and Nick Madrigal are the beneficiaries of this and should see a bump in playing time. As for Hughes, here’s hoping that his knee will finally be right.
Elvis Andrus – SS Chicago White Sox
Pedro Grifol said Elvis Andrus felt discomfort in his left oblique on a swing. He’s getting evaluated.
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) May 13, 2023
No word yet on the severity of the situation, but Andrus will likely miss today’s game. Consider him DTD.
Liam Hendriks – RP Chicago White Sox
Liam Hendriks gave up four runs last night. Today, Pedro Grifol said Sox to reevaluate after Hendriks pitches Sunday.
Meanwhile, Hendriks told @followmefor3 that “tentative schedule” calls for outings Sunday and Tuesday or Wednesday before reevaluation, that he’s not ready yet.
— Vinnie Duber (@VinnieDuber) May 12, 2023
It would appear that both Hendriks and the team are a bit worried about him after the two-homerun game recently. There was some talk of him returning this weekend, but those rumors have seemingly been put to rest. He’s about a week away from returning, but even that’s a best-case scenario.
Yasmandi Grandal – C Chicago White Sox
Pedro Grifol said the White Sox haven't ruled out putting Yasmani Grandal on the IL.
“It’s always a possibility, but you’ve got to give the evaluation process a little bit of time"
"We have three catchers on the roster right now, so we have some time to evaluate this thing."
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) May 12, 2023
It would appear that the injury to Grandal is more serious than what was first thought. Time will tell if he will head to the Injured List, but for now, he’s DTD.
German Marquez – SP Colorado Rockies
#Rockies RHP German Marquez had Tommy John surgery today in Denver area, per Bud Black #MLB
— Kyle Newman (@KyleNewmanDP) May 12, 2023
Marquez will miss the rest of this season and a big chunk of the next year, making him a non-fantasy option until 2025.
Antonio Senzatela – SP Colorado Rockies
#Rockies RHP Antonio Senzatela has a UCL sprain in his right elbow, Bud Black says, and will go on 15-day IL. Club expects him to pitch again this season, but he’ll be out at least a few weeks without playing catch before attempting to ramp up again
— Kyle Newman (@KyleNewmanDP) May 12, 2023
The optimism around Senzatela pitching again this year is the best news possible, but it’s unclear if that will happen.
Chas McCormick – OF Houston Astros
Dusty Baker said Chas McCormick could be back in the lineup tomorrow. Although McCormick said he feels good, Baker said he wants to see if his back feels sore tomorrow after running and swinging a bat today. https://t.co/NayGk3j8Rk
— Danielle Lerner (@danielle_lerner) May 12, 2023
While it’s not the greatest endorsement out there, it’s good news that a return in short order is on the horizon. Stay tuned as it could be any day now.
Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros
Dusty Baker said Michael Brantley has inflammation in his surgically repaired shoulder and the Astros are shutting him down for an indefinite period.
— Danielle Lerner (@danielle_lerner) May 12, 2023
It would appear from an outsider’s perspective, that Brantley’s return was rushed, much like Joey Votto’s was. Brantley will likely need an extensive amount of time before returning.
Salvador Perez – C Kansas City Royals
The #Royals scratched Salvador Perez, who was going to DH, from the lineup today. He’s been dealing with blurry vision. He has been treated for it, and it’s expected to clear up, “just a matter of when,” per Matt Quatraro.
— Anne Rogers (@anne__rogers) May 12, 2023
There has been no indication either way about Perez needing or not needing a trip to the Injured List.
Paul Blackburn – SP Oakland Athletics
Blackburn has been on the mend for a blister and a nail avulsion. He’s looking to finally make his debut in 2023.
J.T. Realmuto – C Philadelphia Phillies
Thomson said the x-rays on Realmuto's pinky finger were negative and the swelling is down. Realmuto said it feels sore. He was going to take Wednesday off, but now he'll take tomorrow off instead. They will re-evaluate after that. The hope is that he plays Sunday.
— Alex Coffey (@byalexcoffey) May 13, 2023
Realmuto left the game in the seventh inning last night and it was revealed that he had a sprained pinky finger. It remains to be seen if he will play at all this weekend. The good news is that he seems to have avoided a serious injury here.
Luis Campusano – C San Diego Padres
Luis Campusano underwent thumb ligament surgery today, Bob Melvin said. He will be sidelined at least two months.
— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) May 13, 2023
Campusano was making positive strides to return, but alas he was never close enough. The surgery will cost him another two months, at least, putting him back yet again in his development.
Drew Rasmussen – SP Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays Rasmussen has a flexor strain, which is an elbow injury that is typically very bad news for pitchers https://t.co/EEbMLY5yup
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) May 12, 2023
Rasmussen, who has already had Tommy John surgery twice, will miss at least sixty days with a flexor strain. It hasn’t been decided if he will require surgery. Given his extensive injury history, it’s unclear as to whether or not he will pitch again this year. The team may want to take things slowly with him, given his success. The Rays’ rotation will move on from this, having now lost both Rasmussen and Jeffrey Springs to major injuries. It’s unclear what they will do next, though they have Tyler Glasnow returning too.
