Alex Verdugo – OF Boston Red Sox
Verdugo left the game as a precaution due to left groin tightness, the Sox announce.
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) May 18, 2023
The Red Sox have a day off today, and manager Alex Cora did say after the game that Verdigo should be fine for Friday. Stay tuned for more.
Adam Duvall – OF Boston Red Sox
This would be great for everyone involved as Duvall was on fire before getting injured. He has performed in on-field drills and no longer wears a cast/splint. While Duvall himself is aiming for that date, it remains to be seen if that’s a possibility.
Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox
Garrett Whitlock said the discomfort from his elbow neuritis subsided after a few days, and he was pleased with both how he felt and his stuff in his rehab start for Worcester on Tuesday. He’ll make another start in Triple-A on Sunday.
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) May 17, 2023
All of that sounds great, and he will likely return to the Red Sox following that Triple-A start this Sunday. Look for him to pitch for Boston in approximately one week.
Cody Bellinger – OF Chicago Cubs
Cody Bellinger (left knee) hit in the cage today and Ross hopes he will be available off the bench tonight. With the off day tomorrow, keeping him out of the lineup is precautionary.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) May 17, 2023
Bellinger was not used in that game, but the hope remains for him to return Friday. Stay tuned.
Yasmani Grandal – C Chicago White Sox
Pedro Grifol said Yasmani Grandal is day to day. Had a recurrence of the hamstring issue he dealt with in Kansas City and probably won’t catch tomorrow
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) May 18, 2023
Grandal came into camp in the best shape of his life. Despite that fact, he can’t seem to stay healthy. There’s no word yet on if he will stay off of the Injured List.
Liam Hendriks – RP Chicago White Sox
Pedro Grifol said Liam Hendriks is coming to Chicago tomorrow to meet with the team and reassess his next steps. Grifol said he’s feeling good physically, but Hendriks’ return to major league action won’t be this week.
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) May 17, 2023
There have been some rumblings of him being activated next week, but it’s pure speculation. The only person who knows when he’ll be in Chicago is Hendriks himself, and that’s okay. It’s all about how his body responds.
Eloy Jimenez – OF Chicago White Sox
Eloy Jiménez hopes to be back by the end of next week. He feels a lot better than he did a couple weeks ago…considering.
“A couple of weeks ago I thought I was going to die, so I feel really good.”
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) May 17, 2023
The last thing anyone wants to do is have Jimenez return any sooner than he should. An appendectomy is a serious procedure.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds
Nick Lodolo had a followup MRI on Monday that revealed a stress reaction in his left tibia. He’s in a walking boot and will reevaluated with another MRI in two weeks.
— Bobby Nightengale (@nightengalejr) May 17, 2023
This unfortunately means that Lodolo’s time away from the game will likely be longer than anticipated. There will be a very important MRI in two weeks to hopefully determine and discover some healing.
Triston McKenzie – SP Cleveland Guardians
Triston McKenzie will make his first rehab start on Saturday for Triple-A Columbus. He's scheduled to go three innings, 50 pitches.
— Mandy Bell (@MandyBell02) May 17, 2023
This will likely be the first of many rehab starts, as McKenzie has yet to pitch in 2023. Given the team’s depth right now, they should not be in a rush to get him ready on the mound.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Jose Altuve will play again tonight at Double-A Corpus Christi and come to Houston on the off day tomorrow to work out. He could be in the Astros’ lineup Friday against Oakland.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) May 17, 2023
Be prepared.
Ryan Yarbrough – SP Kansas City Royals
#Royals selected RHP Mike Mayers from Triple-A, placed LHP Ryan Yarbrough on the 60-day IL to make room on the roster. LHP Amir Garrett was placed on the family medical emergency list. With a bullpen game today, Mayers could provide length. His last start in Omaha was a week ago.
— Anne Rogers (@anne__rogers) May 17, 2023
While it’s unfortunate that he will miss an extended time, the more cautious the team is the better. It’s best to take things slowly to ensure that Yarbrough is 100% better before returning.
Dustin May – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
The plan, a source said, is for Dustin May to get a PRP injection to address a Grade 1 flexor pronator strain. The hope from there is that this helps him avoid surgery, and a 4 to 6 week return if things heal properly.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) May 17, 2023
The UCL doesn’t seem to be affected right now, and a PRP injection will assist in the healing process. The team will undoubtedly place May on the 15-day Injured List, but it’s quite possible he goes on the 60-day one as well. With surgery being an option if it doesn’t heal, this could mark the end of May’s 2023 season.
Christian Yelich – OF Milwaukee Brewers
This great baserunning moment came at a cost: It’s when Christian Yelich felt his back grab. He said it’s improved today and not as bad as some of the flare-ups in the past. “I’ve had way, way worse.” pic.twitter.com/SBLoihpHt4
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) May 17, 2023
It’s still unlikely that Yelich goes to the Injured List, but time will tell. As he said, he’s had way, way worse.
Minnesota Twins – Team Update
Fractured shin for Nick Gordon. Joey Gallo’s X-ray was clean, contusion.
Jorge Polanco had a mild left hamstring strain. #MNTwins— DanHayesMLB (@DanHayesMLB) May 17, 2023
What a disastrous day for the team. Gordon has struggled at the plate all year, and this setback makes it hard to get back on track. Good news for Gallo here, but he’ll likely miss some time while it all heals. Polanco’s injury should keep him out of the lineup for multiple days, but he may need time on the Injured List. All of this makes it possible for Edourard Julien to get called back up to the Twins.
Manny Machado – SS San Diego Padres
Further imaging showed a fracture in Manny Machado’s hand.
Bob Melvin said Padres still believe it doesn’t have to be IL situation, but that could change.— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) May 17, 2023
Bad news here for Machado, as the fracture could ultimately lead to time lost on the Injured List. There will be more updates today and tomorrow, and hopefully, Melvin is right.
Dylan Carlson – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Oscar Mercado is returning to majors as Dylan Carlson goes on IL. #stlcards
— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) May 17, 2023
After about a week of sitting on the sidelines, Carlson didn’t make enough progress to warrant a return without a trip to the Injured List. It’s likely a minimum stay, but anything is possible.
Tyler O’Neill – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Tyler O’Neill will not go out on a rehab assignment this weekend as previously planned. Marmol said he hasn’t made as much progress physically as they’d need for that to be an option. No timeline as of yet.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) May 17, 2023
O’Neill wasn’t progressing as well as hoped, so he will need more time to get better before rehab.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Additionally: Cash says Tyler Glasnow will most likely make another rehab start.
— Tricia Whitaker (@TriciaWhitaker) May 17, 2023
There’s no word on if this is the final start before a return, but he’s likely getting close regardless.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. – 1B Toronto Blue Jays
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. said he got good news after MRI on his right knee. It’s just a day to day thing but he’s not playing today. He’ll see how he feels tomorrow #BlueJays
— Kaitlyn McGrath (@kaitlyncmcgrath) May 17, 2023
Great news here, as Guerrero should be back in the lineup sooner rather than later. He’s DTD and will return when he’s better.
Joey Meneses – 1B Washington Nationals
Davey Martinez confirmed Joey Meneses is going on the paternity list and Jake Alu is taking his spot on the roster. They’re still waiting for Alu to arrive before making the announcement.
— Bobby Blanco (@Bobby_Blanco) May 17, 2023
The Meneses family welcomed their son Joseph to the world just recently. Amazing news.
