Justin Turner – 3B Boston Red Sox
“He felt it in the first inning,” Alex Cora said. “He swung at something and felt it in the knee. So we just took him (out) just to make sure he’s OK. Probably he’ll be down tomorrow and hopefully, he’ll be back on Sunday.” https://t.co/2dK1kVSEZg
— Christopher Smith (@SmittyOnMLB) May 20, 2023
Turner is listed as DTD with knee soreness, with a chance to return tomorrow. In all likelihood, he will miss today’s game.
Cody Bellinger – OF Chicago Cubs
Bellinger has avoided the Injured List all week since making that incredible catch at the wall. He had been working on improving himself, but couldn’t do it to the point where he was ready to play. The team hopes he will only require the minimum number of days before he’s back in the lineup.
Yasmani Grandal – C Chicago White Sox
Yasmani Grandal probably won’t catch tomorrow either as they rest his hamstring. Grifol said he’s available to pinch hit.
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) May 19, 2023
Good to see that Grandal can at least pinch-hit, and he may get a shot at DH this weekend. That said, he will need to ready himself to catch at some point soon.
Liam Hendriks – RP Chicago White Sox
Pedro Grifol said Liam Hendriks threw around 20 pitches in live BP session today, but drew a firm line that there’s not a date on when he’ll return yet. Said repeatedly that they’ll have to meet as a group to determine the next step.
— James Fegan (@JRFegan) May 19, 2023
There have been mixed reports over the last two weeks about him returning sooner rather than later. Each time, those reports have been refuted. Stay tuned and updated for him and his updates.
TJ Friedl – OF Cincinnati Reds
David Bell said TJ Friedl (oblique) will swing and run today. He has shown no symptoms of the injury since it happened.
Brandon Williamson will start on Monday.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) May 19, 2023
While obliques are a tricky injury to manage, it’s encouraging to know that he’s been symptom-free and could return soon.
Peyton Battenfield – SP Cleveland Guardians
The Guardians are placing pitcher Peyton Battenfield on the injured list with right shoulder inflammation. They’re recalling reliever Tim Herrin to take his spot for now. They’ll need a starter for Monday.
— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) May 19, 2023
This could result in a call-up or a spot start on Monday, but regardless it’s something to monitor. As for Battenfield, this could be the reason for his struggles, but we shall see if it’s a long-term injury.
German Marquez – SP Colorado Rockies
#Rockies have officially added Germán Márquez to the 60 day IL to make room on the 40-man roster for RHP Karl Kauffmann, who will start today in Texas.
— Suzie Hunter (@TheSuzieHunter) May 19, 2023
Marquez has also successfully had Tommy John surgery and will miss the rest of this year and most of next. He is wished well.
Luis Garcia – SP Houston Astros

— Houston Astros (@astros) May 19, 2023
Garcia is wished well in his recovery.
Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros
José Urquidy said he is still shut down but hopes to start throwing again next week. He stayed behind in Houston during the last road trip but hopes to travel with the team for the upcoming trip to Milwaukee and Oakland.
— Danielle Lerner (@danielle_lerner) May 19, 2023
The fact that he hopes to throw is somewhat concerning because he’s not expected to do it. That being said, regardless of when he throws again, he will have a huge ramp-up to complete before he’s back in the Astros’ lineup.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. – OF Miami Marlins
This would beat his original timeline of up to six weeks, which would have had him back around the end of June or early July. While it’s nice to hear him want to be ready, he does have a history of being unable to get himself into game-shape health in a timely manner. That said, back injuries and turf toe are worlds apart in difference, so a comparison may not be fair, but it should be remembered.
Miami Marlins – Team Update
#Marlins injury updates:
-Jazz, Avi, J. Sanchez are rehabbing in Jupiter while team is on the road
-Cueto is playing catch
-Enright 4 innings with Jax on Saturday
-Puk catch to 90 feet
-Rogers 35 pitch bullpen this weekend in Jupiter
-Sixto catch from 105/120 feet this week— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) May 20, 2023
The aforementioned Chisholm, alongside Garcia and Sanchez, will not be with the team, indicating that they have a lot of work to do and need the focus to be on them. Cueto playing catch is nice, but his ankle is still swollen, and was just recently unable to throw at all. Puk throwing for this long of a distance is encouraging news that could put him back on the field soon. Rogers just started a throwing program and is already up to 35 pitches. That said, he will need a lengthy rehab assignment before returning.
Wade Miley – SP Milwaukee Brewers
It’s a posterior serratus strain for Wade Miley, who will likely be sidelined for 6-8 weeks according to Craig Counsell.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) May 19, 2023
Ouch, this one will keep him out of the rotation for a while, and a hole for the Brewers to fill.
Joey Gallo – OF Minnesota Twins
Rocco says Joey Gallo is doing fine and could be available tonight.
"It's tough to hurt that guy. … He doesn't feel pain like a normal human, anyway."
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) May 19, 2023
And he did make it into the game as a pinch-hitter, leading one to believe he will be back today.
Jorge Polanco – 2B Minnesota Twins
Jorge Polanco says the hammy is feeling a little better today. Twins will keep working him out and evaluating him over the weekend before they make a call.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) May 19, 2023
Polanco has been out for two of the team’s last three games, and it’s unclear when he’ll play with consistency. We could be seeing Edouard Julien in a Twins uniform as early as today.
Nick Gordon – 2B/OF Minnesota Twins
#MNTwins have announced the following roster move: pic.twitter.com/4tWc0Fnxbz
— Minnesota Twins (@Twins) May 19, 2023
Gordon has struggled all season, and this injury will keep him away for a while. This might be a lost season for him.
Jose Quintana – SP New York Mets
Jose Quintana says he got the good news he wanted on his CT scan. He’ll throw off the mound tomorrow for the first time since surgery.
“Green light,” he said.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) May 19, 2023
That’s great news, as the Mets could use another arm, and Quintana would like to get going with his new team. All that being said, it’ll be a while before he’s back.
Seth Brown – 1B/OF Oakland Athletics
It's Throwback Thursday, the Ports have a 3-game winning streak, and Seth Brown is rehabbing with us again tonight. What more could you want?😉

— Stockton Ports (@stocktonports) May 18, 2023
After having his rehab halted, Brown is back, this time in Single-A. There has been no word on a timetable for a return.
Jose Alvarado – RP Philadelphia Phillies
The plan is to send Alvarado to go on a rehab assignment because he will be out for quite a while. He is eligible to return on May 23, but it will be well into June before a return is even discussed.
Bryce Harper – UT Philadelphia Phillies
No, Harper is not injured with anything new since his return to the team. Instead, this was all part of the plan, to slowly get him ready to play first base.
Manny Machado – 3B San Diego Padres
Manny Machado is going on the IL.
Brandon Dixon is here.— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) May 19, 2023
It was hoped that Machado would miss the Injured List altogether, but alas, here he is. There’s no word on when he will be back, but a fractured hand doesn’t necessarily mean it’ll be a quick return.
San Francisco Giants – Team Update
Thomas Szapucki will undergo thoracic outlet syndrome surgery today: pic.twitter.com/QV6CsjcZSh
— Maria I. Guardado (@mi_guardado) May 19, 2023
A lot to unpack here. Bart is now back on the Injured List, this time with a grade-one groin strain. He has been off and on the Injured List all year, and this stint should be a minor one. The news on Stripling is good, and we should know more once he’s re-evaluated. As for Pederson, he could be back when his 10 days are over early this week.
Tommy Edman – 2B St. Louis Cardinals
Tommy Edman’s lower abdominal injury was indeed a “shot below the waist.” Checked out, no rupture. He’s out of the lineup today to give time for soreness to fully subside but he’s been able to work out and do all of the relevant baseball things. Expects to be back in tomorrow.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) May 19, 2023
Great news here as he should be back today. If he needs a bit more time, he’ll be back tomorrow, but the important part is that he’ll avoid a trip to the Injured List.
Yandy Diaz – INF Tampa Bay Rays
For everyone asking about Yandy Diaz, he’s out here getting some light work in at 1B pic.twitter.com/PZUOWCaTLO
— Ryan Bass (@Ry_Bass) May 19, 2023
Diaz remains out of the lineup, as he has all week, but this could be a good step forward. Stay tuned to see if he avoids the Injured List.
