MLB Injury Report for May 22
Ramon Urias – INF Baltimore Orioles
Ramón Urías is running the bases right now, testing his hamstring as head trainer Brian Ebel looks on closely. Urías is approaching a potential rehab assignment next week
— Andy Kostka (@afkostka) May 21, 2023
This is the first real baseball activity that Urias has done since being placed on the Injured List. His potential rehab assignment this upcoming week indicates that he’s close to a return. It’s unclear if it will be a lengthy rehab.
Enmanuel Valdez – 2B Boston Red Sox
Sox say Enmanuel Valdez was removed from the game today for precautionary reasons.
— Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) May 21, 2023
The team did not say for what reasons Valdez left yesterday’s game. Stay tuned.
Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox
‘Good chance’ Red Sox’s Garrett Whitlock will start Saturday in Arizona https://t.co/yqqOD77dMR
— Christopher Smith (@SmittyOnMLB) May 21, 2023
Be prepared, as he just fired off almost five scoreless innings in his last rehab start. He’s also been tinkering with his changeup, which was his most dominant pitch when he broke out in 2021.
Joey Votto – 1B Cincinnati Reds
Joey Votto is taking a live batting practice session today in Louisville. The next step, possibly beginning another rehab assignment, will be determined tomorrow.
— Bobby Nightengale (@nightengalejr) May 21, 2023
The Reds have been taking things slowly with Votto, ever since his rushed return in the spring. Look for whatever rehab he makes to be lengthy as the team will want to make this right.
Mike Clevinger – SP Chicago White Sox
Prior to today’s series finale vs. Kansas City, the #WhiteSox placed RHP Mike Clevinger on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to May 18) with right wrist inflammation. The White Sox will make a corresponding roster move prior to tomorrow night’s series opener at Cleveland.
— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) May 21, 2023
The severity of the issue is unknown, but he’ll require at least twelve days to ensure that it gets right. He was seen wearing a splint yesterday, hence the designation.
Lance McCullers Jr. – SP Houston Astros
Astros GM Dana Brown, on @SportsTalk790, had an update on McCullers' timeline: "We’re looking at probably somewhere closer to the All-Star break, or after…depending on whether we can get him built up to start. Certainly, we can use him in the rotation, his veteran presence.”
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) May 21, 2023
This ETA should hopefully help people gauge when and how to stash McCullers on their Injured List. He still has another six to seven weeks before his estimated return.
Byron Buxton – OF/UT Minnesota Twins
Rocco Baldelli said Byron Buxton came out for precautionary reasons with tightness around his right knee and said he didn't anticipate this being a long-term thing.
"He's been playing a lot of good baseball. He's been running his ass off out there and it flared up a little bit."
— Betsy Helfand (@betsyhelfand) May 21, 2023
Everyone’s fingers should be crossed that Baldelli is correct. Buxton has a long track record of injuries all over his body. Even the smallest of ailments have cost him time. The team will likely give him whatever time he needs to get ready and be as close to 100% as possible.
Seth Brown – 1B/OF Oakland Athletics
It will be interesting to see first, the diagnosis, and then secondly who he replaces on the roster. Either way, this is great news for fantasy owners needing a boost. Stay tuned and see exactly when he is back.
Ken Waldichuk – SP Oakland Athletics

— A's on NBCS (@NBCSAthletics) May 20, 2023
He has since said that he feels better and could make his next start. That said, don’t be surprised if it’s pushed back a day or two or if they skip it altogether to ensure that he’s 100% healthy.
Darick Hall – 1B Philadelphia Phillies
Thomson said that Darick Hall is getting "pretty close" to a rehab assignment. He hasn't seen live pitching yet but is hitting on the field and hitting off HitTrax, taking ground balls, running and throwing. He will have to see some live pitching before he goes on a rehab stint.
— Alex Coffey (@byalexcoffey) May 21, 2023
While live pitching is a major hurdle to achieve first, it’s good to see him getting close to returning. How he fits into the picture with Bryce Harper back remains to be seen, but he could see close to everyday at-bats by alternating turns at first base and DH.
Vince Velasquez – SP Pittsburgh Pirates
Per Ben Cherington on 93.7 The Fan, the Pirates have not decided if Vince Velasquez will need another rehab start, but "he looks like he's not far away."
— Justice delos Santos (@justdelossantos) May 21, 2023
Velasquez went 63 pitches over 4.2 innings pitched and didn’t give up a run. He’s close to being ready, and one has to wonder what that means for Luis Ortiz.
Logan Webb – SP San Francisco Giants
Logan Webb had some lingering soreness Sunday after exiting his start Saturday with lower back tightness and the San Francisco Giants were still deciding if Webb needs an MRI exam, manager Gabe Kapler said.https://t.co/cqnS5VhKt8
— Sporting Green (@SportingGreenSF) May 22, 2023
There was initially supposed to be no imaging or MRI’s involved with Webb, but with lingering pain, he may get some done after all. Stay tuned.
Cal Raleigh – C Seattle Mariners
Raleigh has been dealing with neck spasms according to Scott Servais. May or may not be available to pinch hit.
— Shannon Drayer (@shannondrayer) May 21, 2023
It’s unclear if an Injured List trip will be necessary, but he’s now missed two games in a row. That said, he did come in as a pinch hitter yesterday, so he could be closer to returning than leaving.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Final line this afternoon for Tyler Glasnow, who allowed 1 run over 6.0 innings with 6 strikeouts
He threw 67 pitches, including 48 strikes
That'll play pic.twitter.com/OOb5lIsC7g
— Durham Bulls (@DurhamBulls) May 21, 2023
He’s all but ready to return. Be prepared.
Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers
It will be at least another week before deGrom gets activated, but even then, that’s incredibly optimistic. He will likely need to pitch to live hitters for a while. He said that he turned a corner, but who knows what that corner even looks like if it’s possible for live hitters this week. He still has a long way to go before returning.
