Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Fried is close to resuming throwing, so it seems realistic to expect him back sometime around the All-Star break. https://t.co/NTlDVugT9t
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) May 22, 2023
While the All-Star Break is a long way away, this at least gives a general sense of when we can expect Fried to return. In short, it’s still a long-term absence.
Liam Hendriks – RP Chicago White Sox
Hendriks looked "really good" in live BP, said Grifol, who stood the batter's box to see stuff and shape of pitches.
"The velocity was really high. His slider was really, really good. He’s trending in the right direction. He’s getting really close."
Another live BP Thurs likely— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) May 22, 2023
There have been varying reports of a day to return, but the one that seems to stick as of late is this coming Monday. Stay tuned.
Joey Votto – 1B Cincinnati Reds
Joey Votto said he feels better and will continue to take live BP. When asked how he felt now vs. when he shut it down, he said the difference was "incomparable"
— C. Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent) May 22, 2023
The good news is that he’s feeling better, and possibly inching toward a return. His original attempt to return was rushed, which is something that he himself admitted. All that being said, we still don’t have a timetable for him to come back.
TJ Friedl – OF Cincinnati Reds
David Bell said TJ Friedl is really close to returning from his oblique injury.
Connor Overton had a setback and will have surgery on his elbow.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) May 22, 2023
Friedl has quickly recovered from his oblique injury since he went on the Injured List about a week ago. Just as we say that obliques can be tricky, they can also be tricky in this sense. It would appear that Friedl’s injury may have gone away.
Brendan Rodgers – 2B Colorado Rockies
This is #Rockies 2B Brendan Rodgers (left shoulder surgery) taking grounders. Manager Bud Black says his recovery is ahead of schedule and he may be able to play this year. OF Sean Bouchard (left biceps) also is ahead of schedule and could return if all goes well. pic.twitter.com/gIPJSuF92v
— Thomas Harding (@harding_at_mlb) May 22, 2023
This is a fantastic development. While it’s a small chance of happening, the fact that this is even on the table is intriguing. Keep this in your back pocket for later in the year if it does come to fruition.
C.J. Cron – 1B Colorado Rockies
#Rockies C.J Cron, on the IL with low back spasms has still not begun any baseball activities. Getting a lot of treatment.
— Patrick Saunders (@psaundersdp) May 22, 2023
Cron has quietly been on the Injured List for a while with no new developments. We now know that it’s because there hasn’t been anything to report. This is discouraging.
Miami Marlins – Team Update
#Marlins injury updates:
-Upper body workouts for Jazz
-Cueto playing catch to 105 feet; re evaluated for mound activity later this week
-Garcia throwing, running, agility work in Jupiter
-Nance returned from rehab assignment because of shoulder soreness; will be re evaluated— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) May 22, 2023
-Rogers threw 35 pitch up-down bullpen; set for 3 innings in an extended spring game next on Thursday
-J. Sanchez lower body strength work in Jupiter
-Sixto throwing no discomfort; will go to 105 feet this week— Jordan McPherson (@J_McPherson1126) May 22, 2023
A lot to unpack here. The upper-body workouts by Jazz are to keep his body in shape as best as possible. He himself has said that he wants to return in early-to-mid June. Johnny Cueto is trying to get back on the mound after multiple injuries, with the latest being his ankle. There’s no guarantee that this mound work will come to fruition, but it’s leaning toward a yes. Good news on Avisail Garcia, who is doing everything but playing with a bat for the Marlins. His status and progress remain unknown. Trevor Rogers throwing for 35 pitches is great to see, and the possibility of in an extended Spring Training game is welcomed. As for Jesus Sanchez, he is able to come off the Injured List this Wednesday, but will likely need a rehab assignment.
Luis Urias – INF Milwaukee Brewers
From the manager’s office: Luis Urías will begin a rehab assignment this week with Triple-A Nashville. He’s been playing in some extended spring games and will be in the lineup either Tuesday or Wednesday with the Sounds.
— Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) May 22, 2023
Urias has been out of action since the first day of the season, so it’ll likely be a lengthy rehab outing.
Eric Lauer – SP Milwaukee Brewers
LHP Eric Lauer placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to 5/21, with a right shoulder impingement.
RHP Tyson Miller recalled from Triple-A Nashville.
Rule 5 RHP Gus Varland cleared waivers and was returned to Los Angeles-NL. pic.twitter.com/72xkqh3xV4
— Milwaukee Brewers (@Brewers) May 22, 2023
The Brewers’ rotation depth will be tested over the next little while with Lauer, Ashby, Woodruff, and Miley all ailing.
Trevor May – RP Oakland Athletics
Trevor May almost retired due to anxiety. https://t.co/jkTgTzGvEi pic.twitter.com/ndmBpxiqK3
— theScore (@theScore) May 19, 2023
Wow, that’s not something that was expected, but here we are. Anxiety and mental illness are two things that are very difficult to overcome. Adding hurdles to one’s job description can be overwhelming and difficult to overcome. The good news with regard to May is that he has recently pitched twice while in rehab over the weekend. He is slowly getting into a rhythm. He is wished nothing but the best.
Jose Alvarado – RP Philadelphia Phillies
Thomson said that José Alvarado is going to do a flat ground today. If it goes well, he'll throw a bullpen on Wednesday and another bullpen after that. Then he'll start seeing some hitters (and go on a rehab assignment). He said they don't know how many rehab outings he'll need.
— Alex Coffey (@byalexcoffey) May 22, 2023
There’s been no word on how the flat-ground pitching went, but one would think it went well enough to advance forward. Stay tuned.
LaMonte Wade – OF San Francisco Giants
LaMonte Wade Jr. jammed his thumb a bit. Kapler thinks he’s ok but it was a precaution.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) May 23, 2023
This injury doesn’t seem serious, but it’ll all depend on how Wade feels the next day. We should know more later today.
Andres Munoz – RP Seattle Mariners
Andres Munoz (deltoid strain) was scheduled to throw a light bullpen today. Per Hollander, Munoz told the medical staff this is the best he's felt since spring. The hope is after a rehab stint, he'd join the M's on the upcoming road trip June 1-June 11.
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) May 22, 2023
Munoz was also quoted as saying that this is the best that he’s felt since the spring. Keep in mind, he had a late start to his year and rushed into the season.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays
#Rays aren’t announcing anything yet, but plan looks to be for Criswell to stick around and pitch bulk innings Friday vs. #Dodgers, and Glasnow to be activated and start Saturday. Allows for an extra day’s rest for Glasnow and others.
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) May 22, 2023
Be prepared.
