Chris Sale – SP Boston Red Sox
Chris Sale exited today's game in the 4th inning with left shoulder soreness.
Alex Cora shared his thoughts. pic.twitter.com/VOBj7yYnf7
— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) June 2, 2023
Cora stated that Sale’s velocity started to drop in the second inning, as it was down around five miles per hour. He wound up pitching through it and lasted only 3.2 innings before being pulled. There will be an MRI later today to determine the severity, but a lengthy absence is the likeliest of outcomes here. Stay tuned.
Christian Arrooyo – 2B Boston Red Sox, Adam Duvall – OF Boston Red Sox
Arroyo playing again for Worcester tonight. Duvall getting the night off and will be back in there tomorrow. Cora unsure if Arroyo will be activated this weekend.
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) June 1, 2023
There’s been no word on why Arroyo would not be activated this weekend, though losing Sale might free up a spot. As for Duvall, look for him to start in the outfield, which will be a big hurdle for him to overcome before returning.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds
David Bell said Nick Lodolo (calf) will be in a boot for the next two weeks. No throwing progression yet.
— Charlie Goldsmith (@CharlieG__) June 1, 2023
Lodolo likely won’t throw for at least two weeks, at which time his leg will be examined to determine any healing. This update was a scheduled follow-up from two weeks ago. Once he does throw again, he will likely need a lengthy rehab outing since he hasn’t actually pitched in quite a while.
Cleveland Guardians – Team Update
Triston McKenzie will start Sunday.
Aaron Civale will start Friday.
Josh Naylor was scratched tonight with a sore wrist.
Cal Quantrill will head to the injured list with shoulder inflammation. He got an injection and will be shut down for a bit.
— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) June 1, 2023
A lot to unpack here. The Guardians’ bullpen will look a lot differently as of this weekend. Both Civale and McKenzie could offer some stability and experience to the team, though first games back from extended absences aren’t always safe. Naylor’s injury is something to keep an eye on. It’s unclear when the wrist soreness began, but he did jam his wrist while sliding on Wednesday. Stay tuned while it’s determined if it will require extended time away. As for Quantrill, he has struggled recently, and this could help explain it. The use of an injection could speed up the healing process.
Kris Bryant – OF Colorado Rockies
The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have reinstated outfielder Charlie Blackmon from the bereavement list and have placed outfielder Kris Bryant on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to May 31) with a left heel bruise.
— Rockies Club Information (@RockiesClubInfo) June 1, 2023
The injury is worrisome due to his issues with plantar fasciitis last year. While Bryant has remained relatively healthy, his power numbers have all but disappeared. It remains to be seen if he’s been dealing with this for a while.
Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros
Michael Brantley hit off a tee today, Astros manager Dusty Baker said
— Danielle Lerner (@danielle_lerner) June 1, 2023
Brantley will make his way through the processes yet again after his last rehab outing failed. This is one of the middle stages to see if his shoulder can sustain the pressures of swinging and movement. He still has a long way to go before returning.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Anthony Rendon is taking grounders again today, but still not throwing to first. Other infielders in the drill are throwing.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) June 1, 2023
Rendon did not throw the ball after fielding it, so it’s possible that the injury sustained is still bothering him. He last played on May 13 and does not seem to be close enough to warrant a rehab outing.
Wade Miley – SP Milwaukee Brewers
Miley has been on the IL since May 17 with a left lat strain.
Bullpen sessions are on the horizon.
— Todd Rosiak (@Todd_Rosiak) June 1, 2023
This is great news as the timeline for this seems to be quicker than anticipated. He apparently feels great and the team is comfortable with pushing through to ensure that he’s going to pitch for them. Stay tuned.
Max Kepler – OF Minnesota Twins, Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins
Medical updates:
Carlos Correa left the game with a re-aggravation of the plantar fasciitis.
Max Kepler left the game with a migraine.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) June 2, 2023
While Kepler’s injury doesn’t seem to be too serious, and he should be DTD for now. As for Correa, a reoccurrence of an injury almost always means that a trip to the Injured List. Plantar fasciitis is a serious injury that is hard to play through. He could be facing a lengthy time away from the team.
Byron Buxton – DH Minnesota Twins
Buxton will get imaging done on his ribs tomorrow morning, but Rocco said he's hopeful it's OK given it didn't seem to get worse throughout the evening following Buxton's exit.
Will also have to wait and see how Kepler's doing tomorrow, too.
— Do-Hyoung Park (@dohyoungpark) June 2, 2023
Buxton has been battling knee injuries for a while now, and now this is an unwelcomed addition to the pain. One has to wonder if he will head to the Injured List for ten days to help him get right. Stay tuned.
Trevor Larnach – OF Minnesota Twins, Caleb Thielbar – RP Minnesota Twins
Trevor Larnach (pneumonia) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A St. Paul.
Caleb Thielbar (oblique), who has made two rehab appearances with Triple-A St. Paul, will be evaluated by the #MNTwins tomorrow to see if he's ready to return.
— Aaron Gleeman (@AaronGleeman) June 1, 2023
Look for both Larnach and Thielbar to be reinstated within the week, as both have been trending upward.
Jose Alvarado – RP Philadelphia Phillies
Jose Alvarado will begin a rehab assignment Saturday with Triple A Lehigh Valley. Seems likely he’d make 2 appearances.
— Corey Seidman (@CSeidmanNBCS) June 1, 2023
It’s looking like Alvarado will be back shortly and is worth rostering for next week’s slate of games.
Alec Bohm – INF Philadelphia Phillies
Alec Bohm goes on the injured list with his hamstring issue.
Infielder Drew Ellis is on the lineup card for the Phillies today, off the bench. He has 100 big-league plate appearances (D-backs and Mariners). He’d hit .269/.380/.628 at Triple A.
— Corey Seidman (@CSeidmanNBCS) June 1, 2023
The injury is considered mild, so we could be looking at a minimum stay on the Injured List.
Danny Jansen – C Toronto Blue Jays
Update: Danny Jansen (IL-groin) will not travel with #BlueJays to NY. He’ll stay behind to continue his running progression. John Schneider told me he’s been hitting in the cages & throwing with no issues. Today did some light jogging. No timetable for a return. Encouraging news
— Hazel Mae (@thehazelmae) June 1, 2023
All of this sounds like a busy and productive week for Jansen. He is eligible to return on Monday, and that seems possible.
