The baseball season is in full swing and the injuries have been piling up, resulting in what seems like the most prospect call-ups we have seen in years. This keeps me busy constantly digging for the “next” prospects to get the call to the majors. In this article, I will give you six prospects to stash now in your fantasy baseball dynasty leagues. Let’s get into it.

3 Pitching Prospects To Watch

Gavin Williams, RHP CLE

One of the most exciting pitchers left in the minor leagues right now is Gavin Williams. The 23-year-old out of East Carolina University had a fantastic month of May. Through five starts Williams stuck out 36 batters in 26.2 innings with a solid .176 average against and a 2.70 ERA. Williams’ full-season numbers are just as impressive as the right-hander has a 12.29 K/9 with a slightly inflated 3.95 BB/9. The Guardians have some pitchers who could be moved at the trade deadline in Cal Quantrill (currently on the IL), Aaron Civale, and possibly even Shane Bieber. It might only take another injury for Williams to get his shot at solidifying himself as a member of the Guardians rotation for years to come.

Kyle Harrison, LHP SFG

The one pitcher that has been atop the leaderboards for strikeouts in the Pacific Coast League (PCL) for the majority of the season has been Kyle Harrison. The 21-year-old Harrison has been a strikeout machine for the Sacramento River Cats this season as he has a 15.31 K/9 over 13 starts. In 42.1 innings pitched Harrison has struck out 72 batters with a .167 average against and a 3.40 ERA. The two concerns I have are the high walk rates (7.44 BB/9) and how deep Harrison is going in games, or should I say the lack thereof. Harrison has not gone over 4.1 innings in any of his 13 starts this season.

This to me is a concern that the inefficiency and high walk rates could hold him back from being a starter long-term if not addressed. Regardless, the results are impressive considering that Harrison is pitching in a notoriously hitter-friendly league. Kyle Harrison needs to be on the watch list for a potential call-up by the All-Star break in my opinion.

Mike Vasil, RHP NYM

The word came in on June 12 that the New York Mets were promoting Mike Vasil to Triple-A Syracuse. The promotion is well deserved for the 23-year-old out of the University of Virginia. Over his last 10 starts in double-A Binghampton, Vasil struck out 57 batters in 51 innings with a batting average against of .186 while finishing double-A with a 3.71 ERA. With a 10.06 K/9 and 1.41 walks per nine, there is a lot to love about Mike Vasil’s performance. The only knock on Vasil’s time with the Rumbleponies would be the home runs given up. In his 10 starts, Vasil had a 1.41 HR/9 and a 12.9% HR/FB rate.

Vasil has shown that he could be a solid option for the Mets at some point this year. With the injuries mounting in Queens and aging veteran pitchers making routine stops on the injured list, look for Mike Vasil to be a solid option if he continues to pitch well in triple-A.

3 Hitting Prospects To Watch

Ronny Mauricio, SS NYM

The stellar season continues for Ronny Mauricio as the adjustments to his swing over the offseason continue to impress. Currently in triple-A, Mauricio is slashing .320/.360/.524 with eight home runs, 38 runs, 35 RBIs, and nine stolen bases in 60 games. Mauricio has cut this strikeout rate to 16.5% while continuing to struggle with the walk rate as it is at an abysmal 4.1%. Despite the questionable plate discipline, Mauricio has been hitting the ball hard and has been impressive with his approach at the plate. The Mets have him working out at different positions over the last couple of weeks including second base and outfield. This positional flexibility and the numbers Mauricio put up in May could warrant a call-up if an injury arises.

 

Luis Matos, OF SFG

At only 21 years old, Luis Matos has already had a roller-coaster career to this point and is on the precipice of making his major league debut this summer. What plagued Matos in 2022 seems to be firmly in the rearview mirror as he has adjusted his swing and approach at the plate with fantastic results. Matos started his season in double-A Richmond where he slashed .304/.398/.443 with three home runs, 18 runs scored and nine stolen bases in 31 games. All the while, Matos lowered his strikeout rate to 9.0% and raised his walk rate to 12.8% in 133 plate appearances before the promotion to triple-A Sacramento.

Since his promotion, Matos has found a way to get even better. In 23 games in Triple-A, Matos is slashing .396/.434/.660 with six home runs, 20 runs scored, 19 RBIs, and six stolen bases in seven tries. His strikeout rate has stayed extremely low at 7% but the same can be said about his lower walk rate of 6.1% since the promotion. Despite the lower walk rates, Luis Matos has performed well this season and should be knocking on the door to the majors. This might be the last call for Matos before the train leaves the station and he entrenches himself as a dynamic leadoff hitter.

Jordan Westburg, SS BAL

Baltimore has to be getting close to calling up the big names down in Norfolk now right? Colton Cowser is back and mashing, Heston Kjerstad has been promoted to the Tides, and Connor Norby has continued to be rock solid. So when will it be Westburg’s turn to get the call? Currently, the 24-year-old Westburg is slashing .300/.378/.600 with 17 home runs, 52 RBIs, and five stolen bases in 56 games. Westburg has shown patience at the plate, walking 9.7% of the time while only striking out at a 22% clip. During May, Westburg had a power surge, hitting nine of his 17 home runs and slugging .645. To be fair any one of the players mentioned above is deserving of a promotion, begging the question what are the Orioles waiting for?
