MLB Injury Report
Ryan Mountcastle – 1B Baltimore Orioles
Ryan Mountcastle is on the field taking a few throws at first base, which seems like a good sign. Brandon Hyde said Mountcastle (vertigo) is getting closer but not fully back yet
— Andy Kostka (@afkostka) June 16, 2023
It is unclear whether or not Mountcastle will be able to return on June 20 when he is first eligible to do so.
Tanner Houck – SP Boston Red Sox
Alex Cora provides an update on Tanner Houck after the pitcher was hit in the face by a line drive and removed from the game with a facial contusion.

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) June 17, 2023
The team has said that he has a facial contusion, which means that it’s a bruise. It’s been reported that he has never lost consciousness and that he was making jokes with teammates at the hospital throughout the night. It’s unclear as to whether or not he’ll need an Injury List designation or not.
Justin Steele – SP Chicago Cubs
Cubs report that Justin Steele’s bullpen went well yesterday and he will start tomorrow.
— Jared Wyllys (@jwyllys) June 16, 2023
Be prepared.
Mike Clevinger – SP Chicago White Sox
Prior to tonight’s series opener at Seattle, the #WhiteSox placed right-handed pitcher Mike Clevinger on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 15) with right biceps inflammation and recalled right-hander Jesse Scholtens from Class AAA Charlotte.
— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) June 16, 2023
Despite there being no structural damage after experiencing discomfort in his last start, Clevinger will need time on the Injured List for his ailing bicep. It’s unclear if he will need more than the fifteen-day minimum.
Triston McKenzie – SP Cleveland Guardians
Triston McKenzie is getting an MRI tonight in Phoenix on his sore right elbow. The Guardians will then make a decision on whether he returns to the IL. He opened the year on the IL and made just two starts before his elbow started barking.
— paul hoynes (@hoynsie) June 17, 2023
McKenzie has missed most of the season with shoulder issues. Now, he will likely miss time with an elbow issue. This is nowhere near being anything close to good news, but we will know more once the results of the MRI come through.
Tarik Skubal – SP Detroit Tigers
Tarik Skubal’s next rehab start for @MudHens is scheduled for next Wednesday in Toledo, according to Tigers medical update.
— Jason Beck (@beckjason) June 16, 2023
Skubal has looked solid while pitching in his rehab assignment. His next one could be his last. Stay tuned.
Eduardo Rodriguez – SP Detroit Tigers
Per Tigers medical update, Eduardo Rodriguez threw a bullpen session today.
— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) June 16, 2023
Rodriguez is said to be itching to do more every day, which could mean that he is feeling better at a faster rate than expected. There is no timetable set here, but a late-July/early-August return seems possible.
Michael Massey – 2B Kansas City Royals
Michael Massey was scratched with a “left index finger laceration.” Day to day. #Royals
— Anne Rogers (@anne__rogers) June 16, 2023
Consider Massey DTD while he takes care of this finger.
Salvador Perez – C Kansas City Royals
Salvador Perez is out of the lineup tonight after getting hit on the hand with a pitch on Wednesday, but the #Royals hope “in the next couple days he’s feeling good enough to play,” manager Matt Quatraro said.
— Anne Rogers (@anne__rogers) June 16, 2023
It’s looking like Perez will miss the weekend, but a return early next week seems possible.
Anthony Rendon – 1B Los Angeles Angels, Gio Urshela – INF Los Angeles Angels
Anthony Rendon is day to day. He’s very sore today thought.
Urshela is getting some more tests on Monday but he’s not going to be back anytime soon.
Also, Hunter Renfroe is working out at 1B
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 16, 2023
Consider Rendon DTD, while Urshela looks to be gone long-term. As for Renfroe, this has nothing to do with anything injury-related, but having first-base eligibility would be a very intriguing development.
Max Muncy – 3B Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers placed Max Muncy on the 10-day injured list and recalled Michael Busch.
Emmet Sheehan was officially called up, with Michael Grove optioned the corresponding move.
— Matthew Moreno (@Matthew__Moreno) June 16, 2023
The world’s worst-kept secret is finally revealed, as Muncy will miss at least ten days with his injured hamstring. We’ll know at some point whether or not this is a Grade one or Grade two level injury.
Chris Taylor – OF Los Angeles Dodgers, David Peralta – OF Los Angeles Dodgers
David Peralta left the game with a left hamstring strain and Chris Taylor left the game with right knee pain.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) June 17, 2023
We will know about the conditions of both players once tests and imaging results have been revealed if it even gets to that point. For now, consider them DTD.
Jesse Winker – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Jesse Winker is back with the Brewers and awaiting activation. “It was the smart thing to do, to go out and test” his neck, he said.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) June 16, 2023
It’ll happen this weekend.
Pete Alonso – 1B New York Mets
Pete Alonso has been hitting in the cage, Showalter said. Said he expects him back "before long," but no exact timetable.
— Laura Albanese (@AlbaneseLaura) June 16, 2023
Alonso was given a timetable of up to one month to be away. This is a great step forward in his attempt to return sooner than that.
Jonathan Loaisgia – RP New York Yankees
Jonathan Loáisiga recently started his throwing program by playing catch on Monday, per Aaron Boone. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) June 16, 2023
Loaisiga is basically starting from scratch, and here is the first step forward. It will be a long time before he returns.
Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
Yankees LHP Nestor Cortes is scheduled to start playing catch on Sunday. He expects to return sometime in July.
— Randy Miller (@RandyJMiller) June 16, 2023
Following his two-week shutdown, Cortes is ready to start throwing again. He is starting from the beginning here, but he should pass through the stages to get better quicker than the aforementioned Loaisiga.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees
Aaron Judge had another PRP injection in his toe during yesterday’s off-day, per Aaron Boone. There is a second ligament that has been bothering him. Still no timetable for return.
— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) June 16, 2023
Judge continues to get injections in his toe, and the second ligament reveal is a bit worrisome. Perhaps that’s the reason for his not being back yet. Time will tell, but it doesn’t seem like he is ready to return anytime soon. Though when asked, manager Aaron Boone said that he could be back in a week or in four, he doesn’t know.
Carlos Rodon – SP New York Yankees
Yankees LHP Carlos Rodon to start rehab assignment Tuesday at Somerset. He’s likely to make 3 starts in minors.
— Randy Miller (@RandyJMiller) June 16, 2023
This is good news, but it will likely be a lengthy assignment at that. Rodon has yet to pitch this year and will need to build himself up and be able to do everything he’s normally done.
Harrison Bader – OF New York Yankees
Harrison Bader didn’t feel ready to return, according to Aaron Boone … more defensively than offensively. Everyone involved agreed to give him two more minor league games. New plan is that he would return Tuesday in New York.
— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) June 16, 2023
Be prepared (again).
Mitch Haniger – OF San Francisco Giants
Giants say Mitch Haniger underwent successful surgery on his fractured forearm. He is expected to miss 10 weeks, according to their news release. That would peg his return for Aug. 26 or thereabouts.
— Andrew Baggarly (@extrabaggs) June 16, 2023
Unfortunate news for the Giants, who just can’t get healthy this season. Haniger himself would make for an interesting stash later this summer. Keep an eye on his progression while he works his way back.
Tyler O’Neill – OF St. Louis Cardinals
Cardinals say they’ve acquired IF/OF Richie Palacios from Cleveland for cash and optioned him to Memphis. Tyler O’Neill to the 60 to make room.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) June 16, 2023
This pushes O’Neill’s earliest return date to July 4, but there’s no guarantee that he’ll make it back then. He was also cleared to play catch yesterday.
Lars Nootbar – OF St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards manager Oli Marmol said outfielder Lars Nootbaar (back) took batting practice and did some agility work with the @memphisredbirds on Thursday. Nootbaar is scheduled to do more work tonight, DH on Saturday and play in the outfield on Sunday. He will then be reevaluated.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) June 16, 2023
The hope remains that he will be able to play while the team is in London.
Josh Fleming – SP Tampa Bay Rays
Josh Fleming isn’t going to need surgery, Kevin Cash said. He’ll continue to rehab. “We’ll be able to get a ball I. His hands.” #Rays
— Kristie Ackert (@ByKristieAckert) June 17, 2023
This decision salved Fleming’s season, as surgery may have put him on the shell indefinitely.
