Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Saturday, July 1, 2023. Inside, you’ll see the latest development for Max Fried in his quest to return. The Yankees have a mixed bag of updates, but it looks like we could see Nestor Cortes back sooner than expected. Jeremy Pena’s injury is nothing to sleep on, and Michael Conforto may not get a shot to play in New York this weekend. This, alongside all MLB updates, in today’s Injury Report.

Corbin Carroll – OF Arizona Diamondbacks, Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
Diamondbacks: OF Corbin Carroll (right shoulder soreness) was out of the lineup, but could return Saturday night. … RHP Merrill Kelly (right calf inflammation) played catch at 120 feet and could throw a bullpen Saturday. #dbacks #phx
— Asif Malik (@PHX_USA_Sports) July 1, 2023
Carroll missed last night’s game, but there’s been no indication that he will be placed on the Injured List just yet. As for Kelly, it looks like he is progressing well in his quest to return shortly.
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Max Fried faced hitters for the first time since resuming throwing. If went well, Snitker said. Big step in his rehab process. Still no timetable for rehab assignment etc., but return to #Braves rotation not too long after All-Star break seems reasonable expectation.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) June 30, 2023
As mentioned here, this was a big step forward for Fried and his recovery. While it all depends on how he feels afterward, it looks like he could have a rehab assignment soon. Stay tuned.
Ryan Mountcastle – 1B Baltimore Orioles
• James McCann (ankle) will catch nine innings tomorrow and Sunday at an affiliate
• Austin Voth (elbow) throwing
• Ryan Mountcastle will play tonight and tomorrow with Norfolk— Andy Kostka (@afkostka) June 30, 2023
There will be at least one more day of Mountcastle in his rehab assignment. He could be back any day after that.
Seiya Suzuki – OF Chicago Cubs
Additionally, Patrick Wisdom is set to DH for Iowa today, and Seiya Suzuki will hit during BP today.
— Jared Wyllys (@jwyllys) June 30, 2023
Suzuki has missed a handful of games because of a neck injury. Apparently, the BP went well, and there’s a good chance he’ll test out that neck again doing the same thing. He should be considered DTD with the possibility of returning soon.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds, Ben Lively – SP Cincinnati Reds
Lodolo (left tibia stress reaction) had a positive MRI on Wednesday and showed improvement. He will come out of the boot on Monday and report to Arizona to starting rehab program.
Lively (right pectoral strain) could be back to start a game before the All-Star break.
— Mark Sheldon (@m_sheldon) June 30, 2023
Lodolo will have his walking boot removed this week, which should mean a focus on strengthening his leg will be a priority. This, alongside a good MRI earlier in the week, gives hope of him returning next month. As for Lively, the Reds can use him back, so this is definitely good news.
Charlie Blackmon – OF Colorado Rockies
#Rockies Charlie Blackmon (Broken right hand) says expects to wear a cast for another two weeks.
— Patrick Saunders (@psaundersdp) June 30, 2023
Once that cast is removed, he’ll need to get back into game shape, possibly with a rehab assignment. The original return-to-action timeline of mid-July seems out of the question now.
Detroit Tigers – Team Update
Some medical updates from Tigers:
–Alex Faedo, rehab start Sunday with Toledo
–Akil Baddoo expected to play in games for Toledo starting this weekend.
–Riley Greene still not scheduled for game action
–Tarik Skubal bullpen tonight
–Eduardo Rodriguez bullpen Saturday— Chris McCosky (@cmccosky) June 30, 2023
A lot to unpack here. This will be Faedo’s first rehab start since going on the Injured List. He is likely to have other starts, but this will be a big first step forward. Baddoo, as mentioned here yesterday, is closer to a return than Greene. Skubal is set to return soon, so this BP isn’t seen as a step backward. Finally, Rodriguez has accelerated his comeback trail and could be back soon too.
Jeremy Pena – SS Houston Astros
Jeremy Peña had a “bad night of sleep” and has a stiff neck, Dusty Baker said. Baker said Peña is probably not available today.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) June 30, 2023
Hopefully, Pena got a better night’s sleep last night and is ready to return.
Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros
José Urquidy threw a 30 pitch bullpen today, said it went well and he’s next scheduled to throw live BP on Tuesday after the Astros return home.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) June 30, 2023
Urquidy continues to recover well and is consistently getting better. He threw three bullpens this week and will likely try to make a rehab start soon. He is eligible to return on July 14, but there is no indication of that being a target date.
Brandon Drury – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Brandon Drury tweaked his shoulder on a dive yesterday so he’s not playing today. He’s day to day. Eduardo Escobar is playing 2B
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 30, 2023
There is no word on if this is severe, but for now, he is DTD with the ailment. He hurt himself diving for a ball the other night.
Zach Neto – SS Los Angeles Angels
Also, Zach Neto did not start baseball activity today.
They are hoping for Sunday or Monday.
Nevin said the ramp up after that should not take long.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 30, 2023
There was no reason given as to why it was delayed, but the team doesn’t seem overly concerned. Consider this just a minor bump in the road.
Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
This just in from St. Louis: Nestor Cortes has ascended a bullpen mound. Pitches will be thrown.
— Bryan Hoch ⚾️ (@BryanHoch) June 30, 2023
Cortes has been blowing past the hurdles here with success. Since receiving the cortisone shot and PRP, he has been able to throw without any issues. Look for him to start a rehab outing within the next two weeks and be back later this month.
Anthony Rizzo – 1B New York Yankees
Anthony Rizzo is still pretty stiff in his elbow. That's why he's out of the lineup today, per Aaron Boone.
The expectation is Rizzo will play tomorrow, but we'll see. He's getting treatment today and might be an option off the bench.
— Max Goodman (@MaxTGoodman) June 30, 2023
Look for Rizzo to be back for one of the team’s games today.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees

— Erik Boland (@eboland11) June 30, 2023
While this is good to see, Judge needs to get to the plate and practice swinging and rotating his foot while he swings a bat. Until that happens, he isn’t close to a rehab assignment.
Mason Miller – SP Oakland Athletics
We have made the following roster moves. pic.twitter.com/p4X97K8X5N
— Oakland A's (@Athletics) June 30, 2023
Miller still has a long way to go before returning, and this was merely done to free up a roster spot.
Bryan Reynolds – OF Pittsburgh Pirates

— Danny Demilio (@Demilio22) June 30, 2023
Reynolds should be back soon. Be patient.
Ha-Seong Kim – INF San Diego Padres
Ha-Seong Kim has a left hamstring strain. Might have been able to play today but Padres did not want to risk making it worse. https://t.co/Pkw7lSw8Nm
— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) June 30, 2023
Consider Kim DTD for now as he should be back soon.
Michael Conforto – OF New York Mets
Conforto says he has a fascia strain in the hamstring area and it’s been termed mild. He doesn’t sound as if he thinks he will play in this series in New York though.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) June 30, 2023
Get Conforto out of your lineups if you can.
Bryce Miller – SP Seattle Mariners
Bryce Miller said he had a blister issue a couple of weeks ago. He felt if he could've stayed in there the outcome of the game might have been different. But the blister wouldn't allow it. He thinks he'll make his next start
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) July 1, 2023
It was obvious that Miller’s blister was getting to him, as his command was off. That said, it’s hopeful that he doesn’t miss a start and encouraging that he’s dealt with this previously. Stay tuned.
Brendan Donovan – INF St. Louis Cardinals
Jack Flaherty throws Game 1 tomorrow, Matthew Liberatore Game 2. Brendan Donovan (right arm discomfort) will be no throw for a few days but available to hit/serve as DH. Yankees will throw Gerrit Cole on Sunday. #STLCards
— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) July 1, 2023
Donovan will likely serve as the team’s designated hitter if he’s in the lineup this weekend. That said, there’s a chance that he sits too.
Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Hyun Jin Ryu will make his first rehab appearance July 4 in either complex league or single-A.
Velo has been up to 88 mph so there’s a ways to go, but apparently he’s in “phenomenal” shape, down ~30 pounds.
Barring setbacks, he’s probably about a month away from helping #BlueJays— Scott Mitchell (@ScottyMitchTSN) June 30, 2023
All of this sounds like a tremendous comeback is on the horizon. That being said, his performance on the field in these rehabs will determine how good the story will be. Coming back from Tommy John Surgery, he is a shaky option at best in most formats.
Victor Robles – OF Washington Nationals
Also from Davey Martinez: No changes for Victor Robles, who is still just strengthening and not doing any baseball activities.
Carl Edwards Jr. started throwing and is feeling a lot better.
— Bobby Blanco (@Bobby_Blanco) June 30, 2023
Robles’ second stint on the Injured List has resulted in a lot of inactivity. This is concerning.
