MLB Injury Report

Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks

There was no word on whether Kelly did in fact do this, but, for now, let’s assume that no news is good news. Until we hear otherwise, assume that he did this successfully and is continuing to track a comeback just after the All-Star Break.

Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves

It’s good news that Fried was able to do it, and today will be a big day to see how he feels. If things are progressing, we could see him in a rehab assignment very soon.

Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox, Chris Sale – SP Boston Red Sox

Whitlock’s diagnosis of a bone bruise is a big relief from what the expectation was. Daily treatment should help things improve, but the team would be wise to take things very slowly here. This is the second arm injury that he’s suffered this season. Stay tuned. As for Sale, it seems like this is an improvement for him, but he and the team will also likely take things slowly. He was just cleared for throwing last week.

Trevor Story – 2B/SS Boston Red Sox

This seems like good news, but Story is still looking like a candidate to return in August.

Nick Madrigal – 2B/3B Chicago Cubs

Madrigal has been hot as of late, so the timing of this injury is unfortunate. With the All-Star Break right around the corner, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him back when baseball resumes.

Michael Kopech – SP Chicago White Sox

At least there’s some honesty here for why Lopech was placed on the Injured List. Looks like he will be fine (physically) after the All-Star Break.

Chicago White Sox – Team Update

It looks like Moncada and Clevinger will both need another week after the All-Star Break in order to return. As for Hendriks, he has a long way to go but is at least progressing.

Garrett Crochet – RP Chicago White Sox

Crochet will need to pitch in multi-inning appearances before coming up and will likely do so in Triple-A Charlotte.

Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros

This is something to monitor, as it is a recurring injury. Consider him DTD for now, but owners should be prepared to find alternative

Jeremy Pena – SS Houston Astros

Great news here, as Pena’s neck seems to be all better now.

Framber Valdez – SP Houston Astros

There was concern this week that Valdez would miss a start, but alas, all looks good here. Rome also tweeted that this would align Valdez to pitch on regular rest in the All-Star Game too.

Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros

Baker also said that this “shutdown” will be a short one for just a few days to see where they are with Brantley afterward. At this point, he is a drop in all leagues.

Zack Greinke – SP Kansas City Royals

Apparently, this discomfort is very mild, so we could see a short stint on the Injured List if any at all.

Ben Joyce – RP Los Angeles Angels, Matt Moore – RP Los Angeles Angels

It looks like there’s a long time to wait for Joyce, but Moore could give the Angels some help soon.

Shohei Ohtani – SP/UT Los Angeles Angels

Ohtani left his start last night with the trainer, but it turns out that it was because of a blister on his middle finger. He had an off outing where he surrendered back-to-back home runs and then a very wild pitch. His velocity was down all game too. Considering how bad this could have been, a blister injury is a welcome sight for everyone involved.

Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels

While X-Rays came back negative on this, it’s just another injury in a long list of them for Rendon. Given his history with injuries, he is likely headed to the Injured List, despite the fact it’s not guaranteed.

Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels

Just a brutal blow to a team that needs some good news. Trout will miss at least a month, and it could be even more than that. Surgery isn’t even off the table either, so we don’t know where things will go from here.

Logan O’Hoppe – C Los Angeles Angels

Some good news here for O’Hoppe, as he’s slowly getting better. As Fletcher said here, though, late August is the best-case scenario for him.

Clayton Kershaw – Los Angeles Dodgers

Kershaw was disappointed that he was placed on the Injured List but respected the decision of the team. With the All-Star Break just around the corner, he may just miss one or two starts.

Dustin May – SP Los Angeles Dodgers

We should know more about May’s timeline after the procedure, but chances are that his 2023 season ends with this. It’s also quite possible that he misses part of next season, but we should wait for the official word before reacting.

Noah Syndergaard – SP Los Angeles Dodgers

Syndergaard has been out for almost a month with a blister issue. He will likely need a large rehab assignment to hopefully get the rust out of the way. Look for him to be back before the end of July.

Jazz Chisholm – 2B/OF Miami Marlins

A relief for Marlins fans, as Chisholm’s oblique injury is considered to be a mild one. The six weeks is on the high side of time away, but Chisholm is a slow healer. He is likely out for the entirety of July and hopefully back in the middle of August.

Jose Quintana – SP New York Mets

There was some speculation that Quintana would return without needing another rehab appearance, but it looks like the team is taking a more cautious approach.

Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees

Cortes continues to be trending toward a return in a few weeks. Sunday’s live BP would signify he’s close to a rehab assignment.

Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees

Hitting had been the last big hurdle before signifying a step forward to a return. He has done that…..somewhat. He needs to progress to advanced hitting that isn’t light and off of a tee. Boone has said many times that the toe would need to be tested through hitting by pivoting and turning and placing pressure throughout it. The fact that it “doesn’t feel great” isn’t a good sign either. His running at 10% is a sign that he’s got a long way to go. The good news is that in-season surgery seems to be off the table.

Michael Wacha – SP San Diego Padres

Wacha had been battling shoulder fatigue as of late and had a start skipped. This will hopefully give him the time he needs to heal up for the second half of the season.

Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres

Jeez Louise, seven pounds?!?! That’s very unfortunate and explains why Darvish has taken a long time to come back. Hopefully, he can return this weekend before the All-Star Break and get back to his usual ways.

Ty France – 1B Seattle Mariners

It is believed that France is still sore from his collision this past weekend. Stay tuned.

Adam Wainwright – SP St. Louis Cardinals

The hope is that the time off will give Wainwright what he needs to get back on track. That said, the end of the line might be near for him.

Brendan Donovan – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals

This will limit Donovan’s playing time, as he will be primarily a designated hitter. He may also get additional days off to let others not throw.

Andrew Heaney – SP Texas Rangers

The Heaney family is wished well during this time.

Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays

Ryu had an encouraging first rehab start here, but he has a long way to go before returning. His velocity was up near 88 mph, but maintaining that and how he feels today are all key issues.
