MLB Injury Report
Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
Torey Lovullo said Merrill Kelly was going to throw a 35-40 pitch bullpen today.
— Alex Weiner (@alexjweiner) July 4, 2023
There was no word on whether Kelly did in fact do this, but, for now, let’s assume that no news is good news. Until we hear otherwise, assume that he did this successfully and is continuing to track a comeback just after the All-Star Break.
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Braves manager Brian Snitker said Max Fried threw live batting practice on Tuesday — as scheduled — and it went well. Asked if the next step would be a rehab assignment, Snitker said the Braves will see how Fried feels on Wednesday.
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) July 4, 2023
It’s good news that Fried was able to do it, and today will be a big day to see how he feels. If things are progressing, we could see him in a rehab assignment very soon.
Garrett Whitlock – SP Boston Red Sox, Chris Sale – SP Boston Red Sox
-Whitlock has a bone bruise, is getting treatment and will be reassessed next week. No timetable, but a positive development all things considered
-Schreiber could go on rehab assignment this weekend and be back after the break
-Sale is throwing every other day and feeling good— Jen McCaffrey (@jcmccaffrey) July 4, 2023
Whitlock’s diagnosis of a bone bruise is a big relief from what the expectation was. Daily treatment should help things improve, but the team would be wise to take things very slowly here. This is the second arm injury that he’s suffered this season. Stay tuned. As for Sale, it seems like this is an improvement for him, but he and the team will also likely take things slowly. He was just cleared for throwing last week.
Trevor Story – 2B/SS Boston Red Sox
"He's feeling good, he's throwing the ball well… he's making some tough throws… It's looking good, it's looking good. I don't want to get too excited, let's put it that way."
– Alex Cora on Trevor Story's progress
— Gabrielle Starr (@gfstarr1) July 4, 2023
This seems like good news, but Story is still looking like a candidate to return in August.
Nick Madrigal – 2B/3B Chicago Cubs
Nick Madrigal (hamstring) placed on 10-day IL.
— Underdog MLB (@Underdog__MLB) July 4, 2023
Madrigal has been hot as of late, so the timing of this injury is unfortunate. With the All-Star Break right around the corner, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him back when baseball resumes.
Michael Kopech – SP Chicago White Sox
Michael Kopech is expected back after All-Star break. Hahn said plan was to give Kopech extended rest along with All-Star break but Sox felt need to put him on IL after his last start. Hahn said fatigue has been “big factor” in Kopech’s recent struggles.
— Vinnie Duber (@VinnieDuber) July 4, 2023
At least there’s some honesty here for why Lopech was placed on the Injured List. Looks like he will be fine (physically) after the All-Star Break.
Chicago White Sox – Team Update
Updates from Rick Hahn:
— Yoán Moncada could start a rehab assignment after the All-Star break.
— Mike Clevinger could return in the first or second turn through the rotation after the break.
— Liam Hendriks could be throwing off a mound by the weekend.
— Vinnie Duber (@VinnieDuber) July 4, 2023
It looks like Moncada and Clevinger will both need another week after the All-Star Break in order to return. As for Hendriks, he has a long way to go but is at least progressing.
Garrett Crochet – RP Chicago White Sox
Sox inform that Garrett Crochet, who recently started a rehab assignment at Double-A Birmingham, will be continuing that rehab assignment at Triple-A Charlotte.
— Vinnie Duber (@VinnieDuber) July 4, 2023
Crochet will need to pitch in multi-inning appearances before coming up and will likely do so in Triple-A Charlotte.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Jose Altuve has been scratched from the Astros' lineup. The Astros say "a medical update will be available on him later today." Altuve appeared to injure himself during pregame batting practice. Went into the clubhouse with bench coach Joe Espada in the middle of his group
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 4, 2023
This is something to monitor, as it is a recurring injury. Consider him DTD for now, but owners should be prepared to find alternative
Jeremy Pena – SS Houston Astros
Dusty Baker said Jeremy Peña should return to the Astros' lineup tomorrow.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 4, 2023
Great news here, as Pena’s neck seems to be all better now.
Framber Valdez – SP Houston Astros
Framber Valdez will make his next start on Thursday against the Mariners, Dusty Baker said.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 4, 2023
There was concern this week that Valdez would miss a start, but alas, all looks good here. Rome also tweeted that this would align Valdez to pitch on regular rest in the All-Star Game too.
Michael Brantley – OF Houston Astros
Michael Brantley has been shut down from baseball activities, Dusty Baker said.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 4, 2023
Baker also said that this “shutdown” will be a short one for just a few days to see where they are with Brantley afterward. At this point, he is a drop in all leagues.
Zack Greinke – SP Kansas City Royals
Zack Greinke left today's game with right shoulder discomfort. #Royals
— Anne Rogers (@anne__rogers) July 4, 2023
Apparently, this discomfort is very mild, so we could see a short stint on the Injured List if any at all.
Ben Joyce – RP Los Angeles Angels, Matt Moore – RP Los Angeles Angels
Phil Nevin said Ben Joyce is going to keep throwing in Arizona and it’s 3-4 weeks until he can get off a mound.
Matt Moore threw a bullpen today. He could be back right after the break.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 4, 2023
It looks like there’s a long time to wait for Joyce, but Moore could give the Angels some help soon.
Shohei Ohtani – SP/UT Los Angeles Angels
Shohei Ohtani said he wasn’t sure how the blister would impact his hitting over the next three days.
Ohtani also said he doesn’t expect to pitch in the ASG.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) July 5, 2023
Ohtani left his start last night with the trainer, but it turns out that it was because of a blister on his middle finger. He had an off outing where he surrendered back-to-back home runs and then a very wild pitch. His velocity was down all game too. Considering how bad this could have been, a blister injury is a welcome sight for everyone involved.
Anthony Rendon – 3B Los Angeles Angels
Here's video of Anthony Rendon fouling the ball off his leg. He just left the game. pic.twitter.com/ctEngtB2od
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) July 4, 2023
While X-Rays came back negative on this, it’s just another injury in a long list of them for Rendon. Given his history with injuries, he is likely headed to the Injured List, despite the fact it’s not guaranteed.
Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels
Mike Trout said he doesn’t know if he’ll need surgery yet. He said he’s heard of guys returning in four weeks but acknowledged it can take longer. It’s usually 4-8 weeks.
— Rhett Bollinger (@RhettBollinger) July 4, 2023
Just a brutal blow to a team that needs some good news. Trout will miss at least a month, and it could be even more than that. Surgery isn’t even off the table either, so we don’t know where things will go from here.
Logan O’Hoppe – C Los Angeles Angels
Some good #Angels news: Logan O’Hoppe took 25 dry swings and said it felt “really good. I didn’t feel I needed to baby anything… Taking the training wheels off today.”
Best case scenario is for him to be back late August.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) July 4, 2023
Some good news here for O’Hoppe, as he’s slowly getting better. As Fletcher said here, though, late August is the best-case scenario for him.
Clayton Kershaw – Los Angeles Dodgers
“It's trending upward. I feel confident I’ll be ready after the break.” Clayton Kershaw on his shoulder injury and health concerns. pic.twitter.com/9ukh3W83v0
— SportsNet LA (@SportsNetLA) July 4, 2023
Kershaw was disappointed that he was placed on the Injured List but respected the decision of the team. With the All-Star Break just around the corner, he may just miss one or two starts.
Dustin May – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Dustin May will undergo right elbow surgery to repair the flexor tendon on July 18 in Los Angeles. Dr. Neal ElAttrache will perform the procedure.
— Los Angeles Dodgers (@Dodgers) July 5, 2023
We should know more about May’s timeline after the procedure, but chances are that his 2023 season ends with this. It’s also quite possible that he misses part of next season, but we should wait for the official word before reacting.
Noah Syndergaard – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
Noah Syndergaard threw a bullpen session today. Dave Roberts said next step is a simulated game Thursday, which is expected to be 3 innings against #Dodgers teammates.
— Matthew Moreno (@Matthew__Moreno) July 4, 2023
Syndergaard has been out for almost a month with a blister issue. He will likely need a large rehab assignment to hopefully get the rust out of the way. Look for him to be back before the end of July.
Jazz Chisholm – 2B/OF Miami Marlins
MRI for Jazz mild, with no grade per Marlins. Grade 1 is a 4-6 wk deal usually. Oblique is a tricky one, but less than a month is a best guess from Dr. Internet.
— Craig Mish (@CraigMish) July 4, 2023
A relief for Marlins fans, as Chisholm’s oblique injury is considered to be a mild one. The six weeks is on the high side of time away, but Chisholm is a slow healer. He is likely out for the entirety of July and hopefully back in the middle of August.
Jose Quintana – SP New York Mets
José Quintana (recovery from rib surgery) is scheduled to stretch out to 75-80 pitches during his next minor league rehab start Friday for Triple-A Syracuse. He'll also throw a simulated game after that before returning after the break.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) July 4, 2023
There was some speculation that Quintana would return without needing another rehab appearance, but it looks like the team is taking a more cautious approach.
Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
Nestor Cortes threw 25 pitches in his bullpen yesterday and is feeling good today. He'll play some catch today and, assuming that goes well, throw another pen on Thursday. Next step would be a live on Sunday. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 4, 2023
Cortes continues to be trending toward a return in a few weeks. Sunday’s live BP would signify he’s close to a rehab assignment.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees
Aaron Judge said he’s been able to do some light hitting off the tee and some soft toss. He’s feeling better walking around but he said it still “doesn’t feel great.”
— Chris Kirschner (@ChrisKirschner) July 4, 2023
Aaron Judge (big toe sprain) added light hitting to rehab.
To return to Yanks, 'I’ve got to be able to run. If I can run, then I can play. But me running at 10% ain’t going to help anyone.'
Ruled out any surgery in-season. Offseason procedure still a possibility. Story to follow.— Pete Caldera (@pcaldera) July 4, 2023
Hitting had been the last big hurdle before signifying a step forward to a return. He has done that…..somewhat. He needs to progress to advanced hitting that isn’t light and off of a tee. Boone has said many times that the toe would need to be tested through hitting by pivoting and turning and placing pressure throughout it. The fact that it “doesn’t feel great” isn’t a good sign either. His running at 10% is a sign that he’s got a long way to go. The good news is that in-season surgery seems to be off the table.
Michael Wacha – SP San Diego Padres
The #Padres made the following roster moves today:
◦ Recalled LHP José Castillo, RHP Matt Waldron & INF Matthew Batten from El Paso
◦ Optioned RHP Domingo Tapia to El Paso, placed RHP Michael Wacha on the 15-day IL (right shoulder inflammation, retro to 7/2) & DFA’d DH Nelson…
— San Diego Padres (@Padres) July 4, 2023
Wacha had been battling shoulder fatigue as of late and had a start skipped. This will hopefully give him the time he needs to heal up for the second half of the season.
Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres
Yu Darvish said he is feeling better but lost about seven pounds from what he believes was a viral illness. (He tested negative for Covid.) He is hoping to start one of the games against the Mets before the All-Star break.
— Dennis Lin (@dennistlin) July 4, 2023
Jeez Louise, seven pounds?!?! That’s very unfortunate and explains why Darvish has taken a long time to come back. Hopefully, he can return this weekend before the All-Star Break and get back to his usual ways.
Ty France – 1B Seattle Mariners
Ty France has been scratched from the lineup. He was out taking groundballs pregame.
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) July 4, 2023
It is believed that France is still sore from his collision this past weekend. Stay tuned.
Adam Wainwright – SP St. Louis Cardinals
Adam Wainwright is now headed to the injured list, #STLCards manager Oli Marmol tells @dgoold, @TheCatOnBallyTV, @JohnDenton555 and the crew in Miami
— Ben Frederickson (@Ben_Fred) July 4, 2023
The hope is that the time off will give Wainwright what he needs to get back on track. That said, the end of the line might be near for him.
Brendan Donovan – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals
#STLCards utility ace Brendan Donovan, who is out of the starting lineup a 2nd straight day vs. a LHP, will remain on a "no-throw" program through the MLB All-Star Game, manager Oli Marmol said. Donovan has been battling arm pain for weeks & has been limited to DH & PH duties.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) July 4, 2023
This will limit Donovan’s playing time, as he will be primarily a designated hitter. He may also get additional days off to let others not throw.
Andrew Heaney – SP Texas Rangers
Transactions for Tuesday:
-LHP Andrew Heaney has been placed on MLB's Paternity Leave List
-LHP John King recalled from Round Rock (AAA)— Texas Rangers PR (@TXRangersPR) July 4, 2023
The Heaney family is wished well during this time.
Hyun-Jin Ryu – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Positive step forward for Hyun Jin Ryu, whose game progression began today. Return possible within the month, though timelines are of course flexible / tough to pinpoint https://t.co/1PGJnbUnnb
— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) July 4, 2023
Ryu had an encouraging first rehab start here, but he has a long way to go before returning. His velocity was up near 88 mph, but maintaining that and how he feels today are all key issues.
