Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Thursday, July 20, 2023. Inside today’s edition, Aaron Judge takes a big step forward as he runs the bases in Colorado. There’s also some hope that Dansby Swanson can return this weekend, so be ready to get him back in those lineups. Finally, the Texas Rangers had a scary moment yesterday, but it seems like all will be okay in the long run after some good news post-game. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Zach Davies – SP Arizona Diamondbacks
The #Dbacks recalled LHP Joe Mantiply from Triple-A Reno and placed RHP Zach Davies on the 15-day IL (lower back inflammation).
— Arizona Diamondbacks (@Dbacks) July 19, 2023
Davies was awful in his last start, which has escalated his season-long ERA to over seven runs per game. It remains to be seen if his back was the main culprit or if he’s just not that good.
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Snitker said Fried is slated to throw five innings in tomorrow night's rehab start for Gwinnett. This seems to increase the possibility Fried could be activated to start one of next week's games in Boston.
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) July 19, 2023
Keep an eye out for this start, as it could be the final one before Fried returns. He has looked good thus far and all appears to be well for him.
Cedric Mullins – OF Baltimore Orioles
#Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said the soreness in Cedric Mullins' upper right leg has moved around between groin and quad.
Hyde is hopeful it's possible Mullins may not be on the IL long.
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) July 19, 2023
The injury to Mullins was apparently misdiagnosed, as it was previously thought of to be a strain of the quad. Now that he has had some follow-up tests, it appears that the injury is around his groin as well. There’s no timetable for his return as he could miss more than the minimum amount of time on the Injured List.
Chris Sale – SP Boston Red Sox
Chris Sale will throw another bullpen this weekend, per Alex Cora. Will still progress to (likely) two live BPs, then will eventually go on a rehab assignment.
Garrett Whitlock and Tanner Houck are feeling good.
Target date for Reese McGuire rehab assignment is around the 25th
— Mike Monaco (@MikeMonaco_) July 19, 2023
Sale will throw his second bullpen this weekend, which is good news for his timeline for recovery. That being said, he still has a lot to progress through, and will not be an option for the team for quite a while.
Dansby Swanson – SS Chicago Cubs
The hope is Dansby Swanson (bruised left heel) returns during their weekend series vs. the Cardinals, Ross said.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) July 19, 2023
Swanson has done almost everything asked of him as he’s ramped up his baseball activities. It looks like he will not need a rehab assignment before he returns.
Eloy Jimenez – OF Chicago White Sox
Grifol on Eloy Jimenez: "Today he is available. Yesterday it was questionable whether he was available or not. I would have used him if he was available. He is available today. To pinch hit."
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) July 19, 2023
This is two days in a row where Jimenez was seemingly available. He’s getting closer to his return, which is around the four to five-day window which was previously projected.
Andrew Vaughn – 1B/OF Chicago White Sox
Vaughn fouled a pitch off foot last night. Got him good. Still feeling effects. https://t.co/X9kZEdzTzv
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) July 19, 2023
It looks like Vaughn will miss some time while he recovers from an errant foul ball. Consider him DTD.
Kris Bryant – OF Colorado Rockies
Bud Black says #Rockies OF Kris Bryant, who exited today's loss after being hit by a pitch in the forearm, is going to be okay; X-rays were negative
— Kyle Newman (@KyleNewmanDP) July 19, 2023
The injury to Bryant doesn’t seem to be overly serious, but he could still miss a game or two. Keep an eye on his status to see if he does head to the Injured List.
Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros
José Urquidy's second rehab start: 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 45 pitches, 29 strikes.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 19, 2023
The pitch count looks good for Urquidy, and the results are decent. His fastball averaged 92.4 mph, which is slightly under his season-long average. He is aiming to return in early August.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros

— Michael Schwab (@michaelschwab13) July 19, 2023
Altuve ran the bases on the weekend, and now he’s hitting pitches at batting practice. It looks like a minor league rehab assignment is soon.
Dustin May – SP Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers Dustin May underwent elbow surgery Tuesday as scheduled. Flexor repair was performed as well as a UCL reconstruction revision to the TJ procedure he had in May 2021. Projected return in 12 months
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) July 19, 2023
The UCL reconstruction revision is new information and is somewhat concerning. He likely won’t be an option for the team until the middle of the 2024 season, and that’s assuming there are no setbacks.
Jake Marisnick – OF Los Angeles Dodgers
#Dodgers Jake Marisnick goes on the IL with a left hamstring strain. Jonny DeLuca is back with the team.
— Juan Toribio (@juanctoribio) July 19, 2023
Marisnick had just joined the team, and now he is on the Injured List. There is no word on the severity, so the hope is that it will be a minimum stay.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
Starling Marte, who was throwing up repeatedly from his migraine yesterday, will be undergoing tests with a specialist after getting two under the span of a week. He's gotten migraines in the past but it hasn't been a chronic condition, so they're looking for a root cause.
— Laura Albanese (@AlbaneseLaura) July 19, 2023
This is a bit concerning, especially if there’s an underlying reason. Stay tuned.
Harrison Bader – OF New York Yankees
Harrison Bader left today’s game with a left posterior rib contusion.
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 20, 2023
Bader will get an extra day off to recover, but the injury doesn’t seem overly serious for now. He seems likely to return this weekend.
Nestor Cortes – SP New York Yankees
Aaron Boone said that Nestor Cortes' rehab assignment is going to begin Sunday, not Saturday. He expects him to need 3 starts. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) July 19, 2023
Cortes has been out for quite a while and is ineligible to return from the 60-day Injured List until the earliest days of August. Since his PRP injection, he has felt fantastic. Fingers are collectively crossed that momentum continues.
Aaron Judge – OF New York Yankees
Aaron Judge was seen running the bases earlier today in Anaheim 👀

— YES Network (@YESNetwork) July 20, 2023
This is another step in the right direction for Judge, who is inching his way to a return. There’s been no word on if a rehab assignment will be needed before he plays again for the Yankees.
Ke’Bryan Hayes – 3B Pittsburgh Pirates
Hayes has been off and on the Injured List this year with back problems that have plagued him in the past. A rehab assignment seems more likely than anything in an effort to eliminate all doubt of it being a recurring injury yet again.
JD Davis – 3B San Francisco Giants
JD Davis was unavailable today. Out with a stomach bug.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) July 20, 2023
Consider Davis DTD while he recovers from this bug.
Ryan Helsley – RP St. Louis Cardinals
Helsley continues to work his way back from a forearm strain that has kept him out of action since the beginning of June. There’s no word on what his throwing program consists of, but it’s clear that the team is taking its time.
Jon Gray – SP Texas Rangers, Adolis Garcia – OF Texas Rangers
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said both Jon Gray and Adolis García have bruises. The x-rays were negative and both guys are day-to-day.
Gray said he anticipates making his next start, though.
— kennedi landry (@kennlandry) July 19, 2023
It was a scary day for the Rangers, as both Gray and Garcia were hit by a baseball during their game. Both players had their X-Rays come back negative, which likely means they will be okay in a few days. With Gray expected to make his next start, owners can keep the course and not worry too much. As for Garcia, he may miss a game or two while he recovers, but it seems like he may have avoided a trip to the Injured List.
Jordan Romano – RP Toronto Blue Jays, Kevin Gausman – SP Toronto Blue Jays
Zero restrictions on closer Jordan Romano per John Schneider
Kevin Gausman threw a bullpen today; all went as planned; on track to start in Seattle this weekend; date still TBD
— Ben Nicholson-Smith (@bnicholsonsmith) July 19, 2023
It seems like it’s just a matter of time before both are used in a game.
