Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Friday, July 21, 2023. There’s a lot going on in the world of injuries. There’s some uncertainty with the injury to Cedric Mullins, as it’s unknown when he’ll be able to start running again. Also, Yordan Alvarez looks to be back after this weekend, so there’s some good news out of Houston. Finally, it looks like Max Fried’s (hopefully) final rehab start comes today, so keep an eye on that. All of this and much more, in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Max Fried – SP Atlanta Braves
Max Fried’s scheduled third rehab start Thursday night for Triple-A Gwinnett against Norfolk was postponed due to rain. They’ll play two 7-inning games in a doubleheader Friday starting at 5:05 p.m. They’ve not said which game he’ll start.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) July 21, 2023
It looks like Fried will start at some point today. No major worries about him missing yesterday’s start.
Cedric Mullins – OF Baltimore Orioles
Cedric Mullins (right groin strain) said there’s no way to know how long he’ll be on the injured list. He’s able to do everything except run.
— Jacob Calvin Meyer (@jcalvinmeyer) July 20, 2023
It’s a tough injury to speculate on when we don’t know when he’ll be able to return. All that can be said is, to keep an eye on when Mullins starts to run at full speed and know that his return could be shortly afterward.
Nick Madrigal – 2B/3B Chicago Cubs
#Cubs Nick Madrigal leaving on a rehab assignment today. Will join the @IowaCubs tomorrow.
— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) July 20, 2023
The hope is that Madrigal’s rehab assignment won’t be too long and that he can maintain the momentum that he had prior to getting injured.
Andrew Vaughn – 1B/OF Chicago Cubs
X-Ray negative. Bruise, day to day. https://t.co/emOnX0rdWq
— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) July 20, 2023
Now that we know there is no structural damage, consider Vaughn DTD with a bruise on his foot. It’ll all be about his tolerance level now and his ability to play baseball.
Mike Clevinger – SP Chicago White Sox, Liam Hendriks – RP Chicago White Sox

— Daryl Van Schouwen (@CST_soxvan) July 20, 2023
Clevinger will be getting a big ramp-up during his next time out, upping his pitch total to 60 pitches. There’s been no indication of whether or not he will need a rehab assignment. As for Hendriks, it’s unclear how his velocity is up, considering he averaged almost two miles per hour more earlier this season and almost four miles per hour more last season. Still, he’s up and throwing, which is a good sign. We should know more about his timeline once we hear from his trainers.
Yordan Alvarez – OF Houston Astros
I'm told today is a routine day off for Yordan Alvarez in Sugar Land. He is expected to play on Friday and Saturday. Dana Brown said on @SportsTalk790 earlier this week that the hope is for Alvarez to return to the major-league lineup on Monday for the Rangers series.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) July 20, 2023
It’s looking like Monday is the date that’s targeted for the return of Alvarez. Great news.
Jose Altuve – 2B Houston Astros
Jose Altuve is hitting on the field with the team again today.
— Julia Morales (@JuliaMorales) July 21, 2023
Altuve continues to build himself back up toward a return, but a rehab assignment is likely in the cards before he’s back. There’s been no word on when that will happen.
Tommy Pham – OF New York Mets
Tommy Pham says his groin discomfort isn't as bad as when he originally tweaked it just before the All-Star break. Pham couldn't say with confidence that he'll avoid the IL, but "there's reason to be optimistic."
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) July 20, 2023
This is a recurring injury, which makes the situation somewhat concerning. Even though it’s not as bad as it once was, chances are that it will get worse when Pham starts to play again. It feels like an Injury List designation is what’s needed.
Starling Marte – OF New York Mets
In a bit of a surprise move, the Mets have placed Starling Marte on the injured list due to his migraines. The move is retroactive to July 17.
— Anthony DiComo (@AnthonyDiComo) July 20, 2023
Marte had apparently been throwing up because of these migraines, so it’s only fitting that he take some time to heal up. This has been a chronic condition for him in the past, so the team has decided to deal with it and not try to find the cause of it.
Josh Donaldson – 3B New York Yankees
Following last night’s game, the Yankees made the following roster moves:
•Selected and signed RHP Matt Bowman to a Major League contract and optioned him to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
•Transferred INF Josh Donaldson to the 60-day injured list.— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 20, 2023
This could ultimately end the season for Donaldson, and maybe even his career.
Willie Calhoun – OF New York Yankees, Jake Bauers – 1B/OF New York Yankees
Additionally, OF Willie Calhoun commences a rehab assignment tonight with Double-A Somerset and INF/OF Jake Bauers commences a rehab assignment tonight with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) July 20, 2023
Both players are looking to come back and help this hurting Yankees’ roster soon enough.
Jarred Kelenic – OF Seattle Mariners
Kelenic broke the foot kicking a water cooler last night after he struck out.
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) July 20, 2023
Kelenic has been quite apologetic about this action, but it doesn’t change the fact that this is a major setback. Kelenic has evolved to hitting the ball harder, more often, and all over the field, but now he will have to watch as others take his place. There’s no timetable for his return.
Tommy Edman – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals
Slated to take live ABs against Wainwright in Arizona https://t.co/2OBJu3iHv2
— Katie Woo (@katiejwoo) July 20, 2023
Edman has been out since before the All-Star Break with a wrist injury, but it looks like next week will be when he starts to ramp himself up.
