Fantrax’s fantasy hockey goalie rankings consist of the top 50 netminders for the 2023-24 season. At the top of the list are goalies that have proven themselves to be elite, whether that be by winning the Vezina Trophy recently, putting up undeniable numbers, or even playing on great defensive teams. The top goalies will get your fantasy hockey team wins, and shutouts, and should outduel most other goalies ranked below them.
The middle of the pack is where things get interesting. It is a mix of goalies that split time and could have a chance to put up some impressive numbers as well as the starters with no internal competition on their team. The latter half will get starts and could surprise, but they are more draftable because of consistency and the need to get starts if you missed out early in the draft. There are always a couple of starters on teams that you thought would be bad and they end up being a blessing in disguise.
The deeper we get into the rankings, the more uncertain things become. There will be the starters on rebuilding teams, average backups that could prove themselves at some point in the season or get an opportunity due to injury, and then the third-string goalies who are absolute wildcards.
The best draft strategy for drafting goalies is to take at least one top-tier starter in the first 4-5 rounds. This allows you to strike at each position fairly early in drafts and get someone you can trust. From there, you have to see how things play out and if goalies are starting to fly off the draft board.
Sometimes it’s important to grab another goalie in the next couple of rounds to ensure a solid tandem for your team and you want to get a second goalie later by rounds 10-11. Most fantasy owners will have taken two goalies by then and you’ll see who is in trouble at that point.
The final thing you’re probably wondering is if you should draft a third goalie. The answer is yes, but don’t waste a high pick on them. If you have three strong starters, generally all three will be playing on busy nights like Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, so you will miss a key start. Wait until before the pickings are slim to none and grab a sneaky backup who has a chance to start 30+ games or someone in a tandem. Even a bounce-back candidate isn’t a bad choice late in a draft as most late-round picks get swapped out for waiver wire pickups within the first couple of weeks anyways.
