Here is the Fantrax Injury Report for Wednesday, August 30, 2023. Inside today’s edition, the Mariners had some last-minute shuffling to do yesterday, as Julio Rodriguez, George Kirby, and Ty France missed part or all of Seattle’s game last night. Also, Jarren Duran will miss the rest of the season with that toe injury and that opens the door for two prospects to perhaps cement their place in the Boston lineup. Finally, both Jake Fraley and Josh Naylor began their respective rehab assignments last night. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Jarren Duran – OF Boston Red Sox
Red Sox’ Jarren Duran will have surgery tomorrow. He has a turf toe injury. He’s out for the rest of the season
— Christopher Smith (@SmittyOnMLB) August 29, 2023
Duran has been battling a toe injury since he hurt himself tracking a home run ball. He smashed into the wall and had to seek the advice of a specialist. He will miss the rest of the season because of it. Look for Ceddanne Rafaela and Wilyer Abreu to get a chance to prove their worth down the stretch due to this opening.
Marcus Stroman – SP Chicago Cubs
Marcus Stroman’s exam showed his right rib cartilage continues to heal. He’s doing light activity and will continue to progress as tolerated. Still no timeline on a return.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) August 29, 2023
Stroman is a few days short of being away for one month with this injury and he has only progressed to light activity. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him miss the remainder of the season.
Jake Fraley – OF Cincinnati Reds
The #Reds today sent OF Jake Fraley (stress fracture, left fourth toe) to Triple-A Louisville on a rehab assignment. pic.twitter.com/H7UmzLzji8
— Cincinnati Reds (@Reds) August 29, 2023
It is not expected to be a long stay in the minors for this rehab. For what it’s worth, Fraley went 0-for-4 with one strikeout in last night’s appearance.
Gavin Williams – SP Cleveland Guardians
Gavin Williams describes what happened to his knee that caused him to leave the game after one inning. pic.twitter.com/ShfCjB01fJ
— Bally Sports Cleveland (@BallySportsCLE) August 30, 2023
Williams fell awkwardly while pitching as his leg/knee seemed to get twisted on this followthrough. Williams seemed to brush it off and didn’t seem overly concerned. His removal may have been more precautionary than anything.
Josh Naylor – 1B Cleveland Guardians
We think this Josh guy is pretty good!!

Naylor finished the game 1-for-2 with that one RBI in the clip above. This was his first rehab game where he was back in action.
Austin Gomber – SP Colorado Rockies
#Rockies Austin Gomber has had back soreness for about a month and had been able to pitch through it before being lifted in the third.
Is he worried about a trip to the IL?
"I wouldn't say I'm worried. I don't feel specifically worse than I felt the past couple of weeks."
— Patrick Lyons (@PatrickDLyons) August 29, 2023
Gomber exited last night’s game with back soreness. Apparently, he’s been battling through it for a while. Still, just because he’s been hurting for the last little while, that doesn’t mean he won’t head to the Injured List. Stay tuned.
Jake Rogers – C Detroit Tigers
Hinch said there's no damage, no bone broken. Rogers is available to pinch-hit or play tonight.
This just offers an opportunity to ease some of the inflammation while giving Carson Kelly another start. https://t.co/R1RbZvF0V6
— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) August 29, 2023
Look for newly acquired Carson Kelly to get a shot to play more in the meantime.
Mickey Moniak – OF Los Angeles Angels
Luis Rengifo is now playing CF. Mickey Moniak is out of the game.
I suspect you may see a lot more of Rengifo in the OF the rest of the season.
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) August 30, 2023
There should be an update on his status later today. It’s unclear if this is serious enough to warrant a trip to the Injured List.
Chase Silseth – SP Los Angeles Angels
#Angels Transactions:
•Recalled LHP Kenny Rosenberg from Triple-A Salt Lake
•Placed RHP Chase Silseth on 7-day injured list (retro to Aug. 27)— Angels PR (@LAAngelsPR) August 29, 2023
This move means that Silseth won’t be able to pitch for at least seven days. The team seems to be playing it safe with his status as he was originally cleared of even having a concussion.
Jorge Soler – OF Miami Marlins
Jorge Soler says he feels better despite his hip tightness and hopes he'll be back tomorrow or the next day
Listen to his full press conference below!@Marlins | #MakeItMiami pic.twitter.com/ZQNGWkEiO2
— Bally Sports Florida: Marlins (@BallyMarlins) August 30, 2023
Soler hurt his side while swinging and missing last night. He exited the game with hip tightness but apparently feels better and wants to return over the next day or two. Time will tell if that actually happens.
Johnny Cueto – SP Miami Marlins
Johnny Cueto is throwing his first live BP since going on the IL with a viral infection. pic.twitter.com/WETxNN2k46
— 🪴paige🪴 (@paige_leckie) August 29, 2023
Cueto has been on the Injured List for just over a week and looks to be on his way back soon enough.
Alex Kirilloff – 1B Minnesota Twins, Byron Buxton – UT Minnesota Twins
#MNTwins announce Byron Buxton (hamstring) and Alex Kirilloff (shoulder) will both start rehab assignments tomorrow with Triple-A St. Paul.
Buxton is scheduled to play center field in his first rehab game with the @StPaulSaints, likely for around seven innings.
— Aaron Gleeman (@AaronGleeman) August 29, 2023
Great news for both players as the Twins should have some offensive reinforcements soon enough.
Chris Paddack – SP Minnesota Twins
In other news, Chris Paddack says he's starting a rehab assignment with Ft. Myers on Sept. 6. #MNTwins
— John Shipley: Tier 3 (@ShipleyMN) August 29, 2023
This may give Paddack time for one or two starts down the stretch, assuming no setbacks.
Ranger Suarez – SP Philadelphia Phillies
Ranger Suarez feels good after throwing live BP yesterday. He’s scheduled to throw a bullpen on Friday. If that goes well, he’ll likely start Sunday vs. Brewers.
— Todd Zolecki (@ToddZolecki) August 29, 2023
Be prepared.
Mike Yastrzemski – OF San Francisco Giants
Sounds as if Yaz is likely to be back tomorrow.
— Susan Slusser (@susanslusser) August 29, 2023
Be prepared.
Julio Rodriguez – OF Seattle Mariners
Julio Rodriguez scratched with left foot soreness
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) August 30, 2023
The severity of this injury is not yet known. The hope is that he is just DTD and won’t require a trip to the Injured List. Stay tuned.
George Kirby – SP Seattle Mariners
George Kirby has been scratched from tonight's start due to an illness … Luke Weaver will start in his place.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) August 29, 2023
Consider Kirby DTD for now until we hear otherwise. There’s no word on whether the team will just push back Kirby’s next start or wait for his next turn through the rotation. Seattle plays at the Mets, the Reds and then the Rays over its next three series. All of them are downgrades compared to the matchup against the A’s last night.
Ty France – 1B Seattle Mariners
The chopped pickoff attempt got Ty France in his left thumb. The swelling has subsided some, Scott Servais said. He’s also day to day.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) August 30, 2023
The hope is that France won’t need a minimum of ten days in order to get himself right. Stay tuned.
Brandon Belt – 1B Toronto Blue Jays
Schneider said Brandon Belt "wasn't available" after having lower back spasms. #Bluejays
— Rob Longley (@longleysunsport) August 30, 2023
It’s unclear if Belt will be able to return today or if these spasms may require multiple days’ rest. He wasn’t going to play yesterday regardless because of the LHP on the mound.
