Here is the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, September 11, 2023. In today’s edition, Kyle Wright might find his way back to the mound soon, which is great news for the Braves. Also, Shohei Ohtani may in fact return to the Angels’ lineup today, but time will tell if that comes true. Finally, Tuesday is John Means Day, as the pitcher will make his 2023 debut after rehabbing from Tommy John Surgery. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report
Ketel Marte – 2B Arizona Diamondbacks
Per @Dbacks manager Torey Lovullo, Jordan Lawlar’s hand is fine. Just getting a day off after starting his first three days. Ketel Marte is day to day. Probably available off bench today if needed.
— Steve Gilbert (@SteveGilbertMLB) September 10, 2023
Marte did not come into the game and play. It doesn’t look like he will be out for long if he was in fact available to do so.
Kyle Wright – SP Atlanta Braves, Spencer Strider – SP Atlanta Braves
The Braves have Morton and TBA listed for tomorrow's doubleheader. Strider is sick, so he's pushed back to Wednesday. They are out of arms, so Kyle Wright could end up starting a game tomorrow.
— Mark Bowman (@mlbbowman) September 10, 2023
Wright could make his first start since May 3, as there could be an opening in their rotation. As for Strider, his start will be pushed back a bit while he gets healthy.
John Means – SP Baltimore Orioles
Tuesday is John Means Day, Brandon Hyde said. He’ll return against the Cardinals.
— Nathan Ruiz (@NathanSRuiz) September 10, 2023
Be prepared.
James Paxton – SP Boston Red Sox
James Paxton won't pitch again in 2023. Nick Pivetta will stay in the rotation for the rest of the season. Alex Cora clearly had a different tone today about where things stand, and said with resignation, "With where we are in the standings."
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) September 10, 2023
Paxton season ends on a sour note after doing so well after debuting in the spring. Look for Pivetta to get additional time to prove his worth to the Sox for 2024.
Jeimer Candelario – INF Chicago Cubs
Jeimer Candelario came out of the game today because his back tightened up. Ross said he’s getting checked out.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) September 10, 2023
Consider Candelario DTD until we’re told otherwise.
Marcus Stroman – SP Chicago Cubs
#Cubs
-Michael Fulmer threw a bullpen yesterday. Will throw again in the coming days.
-Marcus Stroman will throw live BP tomorrow.— Taylor McGregor (@Taylor_McGregor) September 10, 2023
If Stroman does return this season, it will apparently be in a bullpen role. There is some speculation that he will be back this week, with the rumored date of Friday being the target.
Yoan Moncada – 3B Chicago White Sox
Yoán Moncada is NOT in today's lineup due to right knee discomfort@IBJI injury report pic.twitter.com/xE3i6auyoY
— White Sox Talk (@NBCSWhiteSox) September 10, 2023
Moncada has apparently been dealing with this injury for a while, and Saturday’s game was when it climaxed to the point where he couldn’t perform. It may have plateaued during a strikeout where he fell.
Noelvi Marte – SS Cincinnati Reds
Marte diagnosed with broken nose. Not on IL (at least yet). Can play based on tolerance/comfort level. Possibly with protective mask.
— Gordon Wittenmyer (@GDubMLB) September 10, 2023
Marte was hit by a throw from a teammate on Saturday during warmups. A broken nose could lead to a trip to the Injured List, but he may opt for the protective mask.
Miguel Cabrera – UT Detroit Tigers
Miguel Cabrera was originally slated to be in the lineup today but is dealing with a sore knee.
Tigers hope to have him back in the lineup on Tuesday. https://t.co/ygABShTr3V
— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) September 10, 2023
With only weeks of his career remaining, the hope is that he can finish it off healthy.
Shohei Ohtani – UT Los Angeles Angels, Nolan Schanuel – 1B Los Angeles Angels
Some injury updates:
-Shohei Ohtani and Phil Nevin agreed that he still needs more time. “One more day would be good, but if not then Monday in Seattle,” Nevin said.
-Nolan Schanuel is getting the day off. His shoulder blade/trap area feels sore, but nothing to be alarmed about.— Sarah Valenzuela (@Sarah_IsabelVee) September 9, 2023
It would be an incredible feat for Ohtani to return this week. That said, if anyone can do it, he can. As for Schanuel, there is no word on whether an Injury List designation is upcoming, but from the sound of it, he should avoid it.
Corbin Burnes – SP Milwaukee Brewers, Joey Wiemer – OF Milwaukee Brewers
Brewers medical updates from their Bronx marathon:
— Corbin Burnes sprained his left ankle on the inning-ending out in the 7th and expects to be sore, but fine for his next start.
— Joey Wiemer suffered a laceration inside his mouth on the collision with Sal Frelick.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) September 10, 2023
Burnes was incredible in his outing yesterday, but this puts a damper on his celebrations. As stated, it looks like he will be able to pitch his next time out there. As for Wiemer, he shouldn’t miss any time.
Jorge Polanco – INF Minnesota Twins
We have made the following roster move and are wishing the Polanco family our best: pic.twitter.com/D8oEEpC06P
— Minnesota Twins (@Twins) September 10, 2023
The best is wished for the Polanco family.
Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets
Buck Showalter says that Francisco Alvarez got an X-ray and that it's "so far, so good", but they will see how it manages tomorrow pic.twitter.com/XMB7Numlao
— SNY (@SNYtv) September 10, 2023
Alvarez was hit by a pitch yesterday, and the X-Rays coming back negative are a good sign. As Showalter said, it depends on how he comes back to the team today before a decision is made on his status.
Jasson Dominguez – OF New York Yankees
Top New York Yankees prospect Jasson Dominguez has a torn right ulnar collateral ligament, manager Aaron Boone said.
He may very well need Tommy John surgery, though position players can often return within six months of surgery. Dominguez shouldn't miss much time next season.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) September 10, 2023
The decision to have Tommy John Surgery will be made in the near future. Whether or not he needs it, this is a tough injury for the Yankees, as Dominguez is a key piece of the team’s future. The timeline for this type of injury is sketchy since it’s dependent on the player, the team, and the arm itself. Manager Boone said it would require 9-10 months, whereas Passan himself said it could be 6-7 months. The latter later clarified that the shorter timeline was based on how aggressively the team wanted to handle the situation.
Andres Munoz – RP Seattle Mariners
It’s left hip discomfort on Andrés Muñoz, he said, adding that it’s just been tightness but that it flared up yesterday during a bullpen session.
But he just threw here at The Trop, said he felt good.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) September 10, 2023
It sounds like Munoz just needs a day or two to get himself right. The good news for Seattle is that the bullpen is a strength for them and they should be covered.
CJ Abrams – SS Washington Nationals
CJ Abrams banged his knee while sliding last night, so he’s out of the lineup today. Davey Martinez said he’s available if needed and expects him to start tomorrow.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) September 10, 2023
Abrams did not play in yesterday’s game, but Martinez seems confident that he will return today. Time will tell if that assessment comes to fruition.
