Here is the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Saturday, April 20, 2024. In today’s edition, there’s another injury that’s worth monitoring this weekend, and that’s Franciso Alvarez’s thumb. Also, Jhoan Duran and Framber Valdez are seemingly progressing forward, which is great news for both players. Finally, Ian Happ’s hamstring is acting up again which should be a concern to the Cubs and fantasy owners. All that and more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Saturday, April 20, 2024.
Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets (thumb)
Carlos Mendoza says he's "pretty concerned" about Francisco Alvarez's thumb injury.
He is currently undergoing an MRI. pic.twitter.com/De4fP84Yt8
— SNY (@SNYtv) April 20, 2024
It’s never a good sign when the manager voices his concern about a player’s injury. Alvarez turned from first to second and used his hand to maintain balance, causing his thumb to be jammed. He was in a lot of pain when he made it to second base. There was no word on the status of the thumb being broken or if there was ligament damage. Stay tuned.
David Peterson – SP New York Mets (hip)
David Peterson is about a week away from beginning a minor league rehab assignment, according to Carlos Mendoza.
— Mike Puma (@NYPost_Mets) April 20, 2024
Peterson had made some strides in March when he started throwing bullpen sessions. It would appear that he is now just about ready to get himself back into game action.
Brett Baty – 3B New York Mets (hamstring)
Mets 3B Brett Baty tells me his hamstring is feeling better after doing running tests but he’s not gonna put a timeline on when he might return
— Pat Ragazzo (@ragazzoreport) April 19, 2024
Consider Baty DTD despite missing a second consecutive game last night.
Jhoan Duran – RP Minnesota Twins (oblique)
Jhoan Duran (oblique) threw 21 pitches of live batting practice pregame at Target Field and reported no discomfort.
"He was supposed to throw 20 and he wanted an extra one, so that tells you he's feeling good," Rocco Baldelli said.
Duran is close to going on a rehab assignment.
— Aaron Gleeman (@AaronGleeman) April 19, 2024
Duran has progressed quite well since announcing that the pain in his side is no longer there. The fact that he was able to push himself on one more pitch is another good sign that has him trending toward the aforementioned rehab assignment soon.
Framber Valdez – SP Houston Astros (elbow inflammation)
Framber Valdez played catch today. Joe Espada said the hope is Valdez could throw from a mound tomorrow or Sunday.
— Matt Kawahara (@matthewkawahara) April 19, 2024
While Valdez playing catch was a good sign, the true test of his progress will be when he throws from a mound. It will be interesting to see if he’s able to do it today, which would be right after a game of catch, or if he needs to wait until Sunday or later. Regardless, Valdez seems on the way back, though fantasy owners should be ready for setbacks.
TJ Friedl – OF Cincinnati Reds (fractured wrist)
Slightly correcting my earlier post… Bell said TJ Friedl (right wrist fracture) could be 10 days to two weeks from beginning a rehab assignment if all stays on track. He is building up strength and ramping up activity again after a brief slowdown.
— Mark Sheldon (@m_sheldon) April 19, 2024
This was a correction from an earlier post that had Friedl’s timeline slated from seven to ten days. Regardless of the timing here, Friedl remains on track to begin a rehab assignment soon enough and warrants a stash on fantasy rosters.
Baltimore Orioles – Team Update
From Brandon Hyde:
– Kyle Bradish’s next rehab start will be in Triple-A, likely Sunday or Tuesday
– Tyler Wells is w/ the O’s in KC as he recovers. Hyde said Wells is just dealing with elbow inflammation & hope is he’s back soon
– John Means still needs to be stretched out more— Jacob Calvin Meyer (@jcalvinmeyer) April 19, 2024
A lot to unpack here. First, Kyle Bradish (partial UCL tear) will make another rehab start this Sunday, as later clarified by Hyde. He has been feeling great before, during, and after all throwing sessions and looks to be on track for a return sometime in May. As for Tyler Wells (elbow inflammation), there has been no plan put in place to plot out a return anytime soon, but he remains with the team. Finally, John Means (forearm) threw 61 pitches in his last outing but will need to throw much more than that before making his 2024 debut.
Ian Happ – OF Chicago Cubs (hamstring)
Correction — Happ exited with left hamstring tightness, per Cubs.
Same hamstring he dealt with in spring. https://t.co/3SiDt8mp7I
— Andy Martínez (@amartinez_11) April 19, 2024
This is a concerning development because Happ dealt with this same injury during the spring. It’s unclear as to the severity of the situation, but it wouldn’t be surprising if he missed some time on the Injured List for this.
Josh Lowe – OF Tampa Bay Rays (oblique)
More @DurhamBulls:
A look at some BP swings today from @RaysBaseball OF #JoshLowe
Lowe is rehabbing right oblique injury, aft left hip issue early in spring training limited him to 2g in camp

— Patrick Kinas 🇺🇦 (@PatrickKinas) April 19, 2024
Lowe played all nine innings in the field last night and went hitless. It’s a good sign that he was out there for the entire game.
Walker Buehler – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)
Landon Knack will stay in the Dodgers rotation for at least one more start. Walker Buehler needs at least one more rehab outing, Dave Roberts said.
Execution last night was “not great,” Roberts said. Command was lacking.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) April 19, 2024
Buehler had a disappointing start his last time out, and it looks like that’s the main culprit for an extended rehab. The team will likely decide what’s next for him after his next start, but time is running out here before their hand is forced. The maximum number of days for a pitcher to be on a rehab assignment is 30, and Buehler has currently tallied 21 days.
Dylan Carlson – OF St. Louis Cardinals (shoulder)
Dylan Carlson has taken swings, including some in the cage off BP tosses, and gone through defensive work, including throwing. Feeling some pain on the follow through of his RH swing but throwing has gone better than expected. No timetable, but progress.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) April 19, 2024
Carlson has progressed toward being able to do all of the above, yet he still feels pain. It’s encouraging that he’s come as far as he has with regard to what he’s able to do, but there are still a lot more boxes to check off before he’s back with the Cardinals, including a rehab assignment.
Tommy Edman – 2B/SS/OF St. Louis Cardinals (wrist)
Tommy Edman has taken front toss and tee work, still progressing. Seemingly a bit behind Carlson.
— Jeff Jones (@jmjones) April 19, 2024
Edman continues to progress, just like Carlson, but has a long way to go before returning. Still, every step forward is a good one.
