Here is the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, April 30, 2024. Inside, you’ll find some good news here on many different players. Josh Lowe’s MRI looked good, Yu Darvish will be returning soon, Jhoan Duran is ready to be activated and, a team actually admitted a mistake that they made. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, April 30, 2024.
Josh Lowe – OF Tampa Bay Rays (hamstring)
#Rays Cash said the news was "pretty good" on the MRI of Josh Lowe's right hamstring and "We'll just kind of take it day to day."
— Marc Topkin (@TBTimes_Rays) April 29, 2024
Lowe is seemingly recovered from an oblique injury that cost him the beginning of this season. Now, as he is recovering from this hamstring issue, he is being treated as if he had a DTD designation, despite being on the Injured List. It was a very vague diagnosis here from his MRI, but it would appear that it is all good news. There is no ETA in sight, but given the circumstances, it might not be too much longer.
Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres (neck)
Yu Darvish will be activated from the IL tomorrow to start against the Reds, Mike Shildt says.

Oakland Athletics – Team Update
A’s injuries:
– Ken Waldichuk faced hitters in a 25-pitch live BP today, he’ll pitch in a sim game and could go on rehab assignment after
– J.D. Davis will continue his rehab with Triple-A Las Vegas thru at least Thursday
– Zack Gelof is currently shut down from baseball activity— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) April 29, 2024
Of fantasy relevance here, J.D. Davis (thigh) had one hit in his only rehab game. He will continue to hit there until the club feels that he is ready to return. As for Zack Gelof (oblique), he will likely remain on the Injured List well past his ten-day minimum, as these types of injuries are difficult to predict.
Jhoan Duran – RP Minnesota Twins (oblique)
Rocco Baldelli says Jhoan Duran will likely be activated Tuesday.
— Bobby Nightengale (@nightengalejr) April 29, 2024
Be prepared.
Craig Kimbrel – RP Baltimore Orioles (back)
#Orioles closer Craig Kimbrel (upper back tightness) is day to day, per manager Brandon Hyde, who doesn’t believe Kimbrel’s soreness is workload related.
— Jake Rill (@JakeDRill) April 29, 2024
The team is hopeful that Kimbrel can work through this on his own and avoid a trip to the Injured List. Of note, Danny Coulombe was called on for the save last night. Be sure to check in on and follow Mike Carter (@mdrc0508) for everything bullpen-related here at Fantrax.
Kyle Bradish – SP Baltimore Orioles (elbow), John Means – SP Baltimore Orioles (forearm)
The Orioles plan to activate both Kyle Bradish and John Means from the IL this week to make their 2024 season debuts, Brandon Hyde says.

New York Yankees – Team Update
Injury updates from Aaron Boone:
– Cole threw again yesterday, still on flat ground. Went "really well"
– Kahnle threw a 15-pitch live session yesterday, has another in a few days
– Berti plays today and Tues. on his rehab, probably Wed. as well
– Burdi back on mound this week— Max Goodman (@MaxTGoodman) April 28, 2024
Of fantasy relevance here, Gerrit Cole (elbow) continues to throw well on flat ground, as his distanced throwing has extended up to 120 feet. The biggest hurdle for him will be when he is able to do so from a mound. As for Jon Berti (groin), while he didn’t record a hit in his only rehab game, it’s important to note that he did get out there and play.
Christian Encarnacion-Strand – 1B Cincinnati Reds (hand)
Reds' Encarnacion-Strand was getting MRI about 3 hours before game Monday as a precautionary move before anticipated availability off the bench tonight.
"He's feeling better, but we're just making sure," manager David Bell said. https://t.co/F49tKcEFfK
— Gordon Wittenmyer (@GDubMLB) April 29, 2024
Encarnacion-Strand was hit by a pitch last week and has missed time as a result. The notion of an old fracture causing soreness here is a bit concerning. We should know more when the results of the MRI are released, but for now, consider him DTD. There is a chance that he will head to the Injured List as a result of this.
Kyle Hendricks – SP Chicago Cubs (back)
Craig Counsell said they're targeting "later this week" for Kyle Hendricks make a rehab start. Throwing off the mound has gone well.
— Maddie Lee (@maddie_m_lee) April 29, 2024
Hendricks has been out for about one week after a very disappointing start to the season. If all goes well, he could be back in the rotation when first eligible.
Justin Steele – SP Chicago Cubs (hamstring)
“Wednesday’s a big day, for sure.”

— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) April 29, 2024
On Wednesday, the team will see how well he can adjust to throwing by having him begin a rehab assignment. He’s been up to 65 pitches, and if the rehab start is a success, there is a possibility that he returns shortly after that. Stay tuned.
Seiya Suzuki – OF Chicago Cubs (oblique)
Suzuki went through harder workouts Saturday & Sunday, is getting a recovery day today & then will resume baseball activities tomorrow and Wednesday.
As for whether a rehab assignment is on horizon, Counsell said it's a little soon for that as he still has some steps to clear. https://t.co/A90Ft5R2rf
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) April 29, 2024
While it’s great to see that Suzuki has been able to ramp up his workouts, it is somewhat disheartening that there is no rehab on the horizon. The hope was that he would be able to bounce back more quickly than he did last year, but for now, that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Cody Bellinger – OF Chicago Cubs (ribs)
Bellinger is gradually ramping up baseball activity, including playing catch & light hitting, and trying to do a little more each day.
Counsell: "We're trying to really do baseball without recreating any pain essentially. And so we're trying to take it easy and so far so good." https://t.co/R9jDMZPZs1
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) April 29, 2024
Bellinger is increasing the intensity of his baseball activities every day, but he is still in pain, leading one to believe that he is still a ways away from returning.
Zac Gallen – SP Arizona Diamondbacks (hamstring)
Torey Lovullo said Zac Gallen’s bullpen went well today and he will start Wednesday in his normal spot in the rotation.
— Alex Weiner (@alexjweiner) April 30, 2024
Be prepared.
Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update
D-backs updates from Torey Lovullo:
– Ryne Nelson threw a sim game today-5 innings, 75 pitches. Went smoothly
– Alek Thomas was supposed to play a game today but was under the weather. Not hamstring related
– Paul Sewald to throw bullpen Wednesday
— Alex Weiner (@alexjweiner) April 29, 2024
A lot to unpack here. Nelson (elbow) may not need a rehab assignment and could be back soon. As for Thomas (hamstring), his delay should only be minor as he’s not feeling well. Finally, it’s good to see Sewald (oblique) scheduled to go out there after having his momentum shut down indefinitely. There’s no word on if he is back on the same course as before, mind you.
Eduardo Rodriguez – SP Arizona Diamondbacks (shoulder)
Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has some regret over how Eduardo Rodriguez's lat injury was handled:
"We all learned a very valuable lesson … If we could choose to do things differently, it would be to re-image, make sure everything was good and then keep pushing forward." pic.twitter.com/rZtfDY5WVt
— Jesse Friedman (@JesseNFriedman) April 29, 2024
This was a refreshing take on something that happens a lot in sports with injuries. Too often, the team and/or the player will rush a player’s rehab or recovery with the end goal of having them perform on the field. Manager Torey Lovullo acknowledged this here and admitted that happened with the way that Rodriguez’s situation was handled. Hopefully going forward, the Diamondbacks and other teams will take the approach of doing what’s right and what’s best for each situation.
