Here is the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, May 8, 2024. In today’s edition, Willson Contreras got hit by a baseball bat which will result in at least six weeks of missed action. Also, the Red Sox rotation might be fully stocked in the near future, while the Dodgers may see some reinforcement on their way. Finally, Jasson Dominguez looks to be starting a rehab assignment in the near future, which is fantastic news for the Yankees. All of this and much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, May 8, 2024
Willson Contreras – C St. Louis Cardinals (forearm fracture)
#STLCards catcher Willson Contreras said he will have surgery on his fractured left forearm in the coming days. Doctors have told him that he will likely miss 6-8 weeks.
He said he hopes to return by the MLB All-Star Game in mid-July.

This all happened very quickly last night. Contreras got his forearm hit by a swing from JD Martinez after the Cardinals decided it would be best for him to move forward in his stance to get more strikes. It’s unfortunate that he is now set for surgery and will miss approximately two months of action to have his forearm surgically repaired. Contreras was in an obvious amount of pain last night and it was difficult to watch. He is wished well in his recovery.
Boston Red Sox – Team Update
Boston's starting rotation could be back in full working order soon. Nick Pivetta is being activated to start on Wednesday. Brayan Bello made a Minor League rehab assignment for Double-A Portland on Tuesday, giving up four hits and three runs (two earned) over 2 2/3 innings.…
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) May 7, 2024
This was a massive post that had a lot of news to use. Nick Pivetta (elbow) is back today, so be prepared. That said, he is returning a lot sooner than what was originally believed to be his timeline. As a result, also be prepared for a possible re-injury in the future. As for Brayan Bello (lat), despite the lackluster performance in his rehab outing, he looks to be healing quickly too, and ready for a return, though he may not be back in time before the end of this week. Finally, with regard to Garrett Whitlock (oblique), it’s important to note the language being used here. The word “could” is an optimistic way of projecting a date. Nothing is set in stone and a lot has to happen for it to work out that way.
Bobby Miller – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (shoulder)
#Dodgers Bobby Miller threw a bullpen session on Monday. Dave Roberts: "Velocity was good. He’ll throw another one. … From everything I’ve seen (a rehab assignment) is coming pretty quickly, which is really encouraging.”
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) May 8, 2024
Great news here as everything that Miller has done since getting injured has gone smoothly. Look for him to start a rehab assignment within the week. The team should know more about a timeline to return once that happens.
Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (shoulder)
Clayton Kershaw threw his second bullpen session today
Dave Roberts said it was 20 pitches, all FB/2-seam, and that Kershaw's shoulder continues to feel good. Next steps are ramping up in 'pens & mixing in breaking stuff
Roberts said it's all been "really encouraging" so far
— Jack Harris (@ByJackHarris) May 8, 2024
The team will likely continue to take things slowly for the 36-year-old pitcher here. While 20 pitches is encouraging, it’s important to note that he has only thrown fastballs and will ease his way into the breaking pitches, as mentioned above. His timeline remains a late-season debut.
Gerrit Cole – SP New York Yankees (elbow)
Gerrit Cole threw another bullpen today. Aaron Boone said the plan is for Cole to travel with the team to Tampa and throw another bullpen this weekend.
— Jorge Castillo (@jorgecastillo) May 7, 2024
More good news here as this is the second time that Cole has thrown from a mound without any difficulty. He is still on his original timeline, but the lack of setbacks makes it more plausible that he does in fact sustain this timetable for a mid-June return.
Jasson Dominguez – OF New York Yankees (elbow)
Aaron Boone said Jasson Dominguez “he’s inside two weeks/in the middle of the month” for a rehab assignment. He’s expected to DH for the first two weeks of games.
— Chris Kirschner (@ChrisKirschner) May 7, 2024
Dominguez continues to progress quicker than expected and is two weeks away from getting into game action. That is fantastic news and gives fantasy players a smaller window to stash him away. He looks destined to beat his timetable to return.
Zack Gelof – 2B Oakland Athletics (oblique)
Gelof continues to progress after being shut down from baseball activities. He still has a long way to go before being back into games, for the reasons mentioned above.
Chicago Cubs – Team Update
Cubs updates:
– Seiya Suzuki beginning rehab assignment with Iowa tomorrow
– Drew Smyly and Jordan Wicks throwing a bullpen today
— Andy Martínez (@amartinez_11) May 7, 2024
Cristian Javier – SP Houston Astros (neck)
Joe Espada said Cristian Javier (neck discomfort) will start this weekend against Detroit. The day is TBD.
— Julia Morales (@JuliaMorales) May 7, 2024
Be prepared.
Edward Cabrera – SP Miami Marlins (bicep)
Edward Cabrera exited after two innings because of right biceps discomfort (a recurring issue over the past three years). #Marlins
— Christina De Nicola (@CDeNicola13) May 8, 2024
Cabrera didn’t last long in yesterday’s game and may miss some time due to this recurring injury. In fact, it would be surprising if he did not go onto the Injured List. Stay tuned.
Grayson Rodriguez – SP Baltimore Orioles (shoulder)
Grayson Rodriguez says shoulder feels much better. He’s playing catch. Hopes to be reinstated when eligible. #orioles
— Roch Kubatko (@masnRoch) May 7, 2024
Rodriguez recently started throwing again. The whole point of his going onto the Injured List was to stop his ailing shoulder from turning into something more serious through additional aggravation. It would appear that the plan had worked if he is returning so soon. There is still no timetable for a return and his not having a rehab assignment is not set in stone. Stay tuned.
Nathan Eovaldi – SP Texas Rangers (groin)
Nathan Eovaldi is throwing in the outfield in Oakland. He rejoined the team today after heading out to NY yesterday to meet with a specialist. pic.twitter.com/rma4GjFpDO
— Shawn McFarland (@McFarland_Shawn) May 7, 2024
This is a good sign, given that 24 hours prior, there was fear that Eovaldi had suffered a sports hernia. He may not need a rehab outing whatsoever if things continue like this.
Lane Thomas – OF Washington Nationals (knee)
Lane Thomas is taking full BP on the field for the first time since going on the IL with his MCL sprain.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) May 7, 2024
This is great news for Thomas, who is still recovering from an MCL sprain. Look for him to continue to do these sorts of activities for a while before it is determined when and where his rehab assignment will be.
Alek Thomas – OF Arizona Diamondbacks (hamstring)
Alek Thomas felt more discomfort in his hamstring and is headed back to Phoenix to be reevaluated, Torey Lovullo said.
— Nick Piecoro (@nickpiecoro) May 7, 2024
This is an unfortunate development as Thomas was in the final stages of his recovery and on his way back to Arizona. Stay tuned.
