MLB Injury Report: Huge Injury Shakes Up the Fantasy Baseball Landscape!

Welcome to the MLB INjury Report for Monday, May 27, 2024. In today’s edition, we learn the unfortunate fate of Ronald Acuna Jr., as he will miss the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in his left knee. We also may get the returns of Wyatt Langford and Ke’Bryan Hayes this week too. All of that and so much more in today’s MLB Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report for Monday, May 27, 2024.

Ronald Acuna – OF Atlanta Braves (ACL)

This is an absolutely brutal worst-case scenario for Acuna, who was the consensus number-one pick in fantasy during draft season. He suffered the non-contact injury while running and stopping along the basepaths this weekend, and was immediately replaced in the game. While he and the team initially thought it would be one month, the diagnosis means he will miss the rest of the season. Acuna has now torn both ACLs since the 2021 season and will have a long road ahead of him to get better. His fantasy and dynasty stocks both need to take a long look in the mirror, as he should now be officially labeled as injury-prone given the nature of his injuries and the frequency.

Gavin Williams – SP Cleveland Guardians (elbow)

Williams beginning a rehab assignment this week is definitely a good thing, given how long he has been out of action. It will likely be lengthy in nature.

Bobby Miller – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (shoulder), Evan Phillips – RP Los Angeles Dodgers (hamstring)

It was by no means a great outing for Miller, who was unable to get things going. It’s unclear as to why this outing was a struggle, but the hope is that he was just rusty. He will undoubtedly have another start in a few days to try and build on yesterday’s progress. As for Phillips, it was a strong, flawless outing where he was able to do what he needed to do in only eleven pitches. Look for him to be back within a week after a few more outings.

Max Muncy – 3B Los Angeles Dodgers (oblique)

This comes as a bit of a surprise, as Muncy has always been a quick healer and was thought to be ready to start a rehab assignment. Instead, he will regress and wait for the pain to go away before moving forward. As mentioned, there is no date in sight here for a return.

Ke’Bryan Hayes – 3B Pittsburgh Pirates (back)

Hayes looks good to return to the Pirates soon, especially after yesterday’s run around the bases. It’s unclear if he will require a rehab assignment, but in the past he’s been able to rejoin the team without one. Still, this is a good sign that he is very close to returning and all fantasy owners should prepare to find a spot for him in the lineup.

Jordan Beck – OF Colorado Rockies (hand)

Beck injured himself while making a diving catch in the outfield over the weekend. The team has not yet announced if surgery is required, but he will be out of action for quite a while. While he struggled to start the season, he does come with a ton of promise, so this is a disappointing development.

Jorge Polanco – 2B Seattle Mariners (hamstring)

Polanco left yesterday’s game with hamstring tightness and will get an MRI at some point today. Stay tuned.

David Peterson – SP New York Mets (hip)

Be prepared.

Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets (thumb)

This was a nice development, as Alvarez stepped in as planned and hit the ball hard. It remains to be seen how his thumb is with regard to the defensive side of being a catcher.

Jeffrey Springs – SP Tampa Bay Rays (lat, elbow)

The Rays will be very cautious with Springs, who is seen as a big part of their future. Having him throw just one pitch in an outing is a scary proposition, though the team seems relieved that he said something when he did. There has been no update on what the next steps are for him, but one guess would be that he doesn’t pitch at all for quite a while so that his lat issue can be resolved. This is a tricky situation here.

Trea Turner – SS Philadelphia Phillies (hamstring)

This is the first setback that Turner has suffered, and the team will now be careful with how they progress. He had been ahead of schedule the entire time since the injury, but he had never felt tightness or soreness like he did here. Still, because he was ahead of schedule, this “setback” can be considered something that will likely put him back onto the original timeline of six weeks. He will be given a few days before being pushed further.

Wyatt Langford – OF Texas Rangers (hamstring)

Be prepared.

Lars Nootbaar – OF St. Louis Cardinals (hamstring)

Nootbaar did not play last night, and part of that was due to the wet field conditions. However, given his history of injuries, this could also be something to monitor. Either way, for now he is listed as DTD and we shall see what happens next.

Cristian Javier – SP Houston Astros (forearm)

Javier, while being listed as DTD, is at risk of something much bigger here, and the team would be wise to be cautious. The Astros are depleted within their rotation and cannot withstand another major injury. We should know more in the coming days. It looks like Hunter Brown will take over his spot in the rotation.

Jose Urquidy – SP Houston Astros (forearm)

Similar to Javier, Urquidy will be evaluated for forearm discomfort. The difference here is that he was pitching in his rehab assignment when the injury took place. Stay tuned.

Royce Lewis – 3B Minnesota Twins (hamstring)

This is interesting because the Twins do not want him running like this while he is rehabbing. Either they want him to take things slowly or they are not fully confident in his hamstring holding up. It’s fair to expect him to stop running and stealing altogether while rehabbing. One has to wonder if that will carry itself over to the Twins when he’s finally healthy enough to return.
