Welcome to the MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, May 29, 2024. In today’s edition, Vinnie Pasquantino may have avoided a serious injury, Francisco Lindor struggled to lay down a bunt, and Rhys Hoskins might be back sooner than expected. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report – Wednesday, May 29, 2024.
Vinnie Pasquantino – 1B Kansas City Royals (shin)
Vinnie Pasquantino left tonight's game with a lower left leg contusion. X-rays were negative; he is day-to-day.
— Kansas City Royals (@Royals) May 29, 2024
Pasquantino collided with Byron Buxton, and the Royals’ first baseman took the brunt of it. The visuals didn’t look great given how his leg got bent. It turns out that it is nothing more than just a contusion, and that he is considered DTD. This is a big relief as it could have been much worse than this.
Francisco Lindor – SS New York Mets (finger)
Francisco Lindor hurt his left index finger on his bunt attempt today. It was swollen and looked painful, but he said he got X-rays and it's not broken.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) May 29, 2024
Lindor injured himself while trying to lay down a bunt yesterday. The good news is that it is not broken and that he is dealing with swelling. That being said, it doesn’t rule out the fact that he could still miss some time. Stay tuned.
Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update
Other injury updates from Roberts
— Evan Phillips has one more rehab outing this week, then rejoin team Friday
— Max Muncy is still on a “slow program” bc of lingering oblique discomfort. He’s not swinging a bat right now. Roberts hopes he will again “soon”
— Bobby Miller’s…
— Jack Harris (@ByJackHarris) May 28, 2024
A lot to unpack here. First, Phillips (hamstring) looks to be back later this week barring any unforeseen circumstances. Be prepared. Also, Max Muncy (oblique) is behind what was originally thought to be a short time away from the team. That being said, oblique injuries are tricky and do take their time to heal. Both he and the team need to be patient. Finally, Bobby Miller (shoulder) is looking to build off of his first rehab outing where he got hammered. Now it will be based more on results as opposed to the physicality of being out there. A successful outing here could go a long way toward reinstating him next week.
Tyler O’Neill – OF Boston Red Sox (knee)
Tyler ONeill sent back to Boston, where he will get imaging on his right knee tomorrow. Alex Cora said it is more for reassurance than the team fearing anything is significantly wrong.
— Ian Browne (@IanMBrowne) May 28, 2024
There were some rumblings of O’Neill returning by yesterday, but instead, he was sent off for imaging to ensure that nothing is wrong. While it’s good to have peace of mind to know that he is going to be okay, his numbers for the last little while offer nothing but worry. He has been a completely different ballplayer since the collision, and now this knee injury offers some additional worry. It would be wise for the team to give him ten days to get right before returning, but it remains to be seen if they will go down that cautionary route.
LaMonte Wade Jr. – OF San Francisco Giants (oblique)
LaMonte Wade Jr. has a grade 2 hamstring strain. Giants expect him to miss about a month.
— Alex Pavlovic (@PavlovicNBCS) May 28, 2024
It’s a bit surprising that the timeline is just around one month, as he was diagnosed with a Grade 2 strain. That said, the medical professionals know more about that than the person writing this column. All things considered, it’s still an unfortunate development.
Evan Carter – OF Texas Rangers (back)
Wyatt Langford activated, Evan Carter to the 10-day injured list with lower back tightness, per Bruce Bochy
— kennedi landry (@kennlandry) May 28, 2024
Carter will head to the Injured List for an injury that cost him time two weeks ago. In fact, it was then that he had an MRI and a cortisone shot and this remains an issue. This is a worrisome development, but the hope is that not being rushed back like he was back then will prove to be the thing that helps him heal.
Max Scherzer – SP Texas Rangers (back)
Max Scherzer intends to throw a “full” bullpen tomorrow. He’s still unsure where things go after that but he is sure progressing
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) May 28, 2024
Scherzer is hopeful that once this bullpen is completed, he can move along to a rehab assignment. That said, given his age and the abundance of minor ailments all over his body this season, the team may wish to take things slowly. There is currently no plan in place for him, but after a successful bullpen, chances are that some clarity will come to light.
Trevor Megill – SP Milwaukee Brewers (arm)
Pat Murphy said Trevor Megill did not suffer a fracture on the line drive in the 10th inning.
— Sophia Minnaert (@SophiaMinnaert) May 29, 2024
Megill was hit in the arm with a line drive in last night’s game. He was sent for x-rays and they came back negative, which is great news. Still, it is unclear as to how much time he will miss as a result.
Rhys Hoskins – 1B Milwaukee Brewers (hamstring)
Rhys Hoskins was running on the field today and has some more strides to take in that area literally and figuratively, but it’s not out of the question he gets activated in time for a return to Philadelphia next week, Pat Murphy said.
— Curt Hogg (@CyrtHogg) May 28, 2024
Hoskins has been able to take a full BP session while also run the basepaths. He appears to be close to returning, though it’s unclear as to if he will require a rehab assignment beforehand. Given the aforementioned report, it would appear that he could be ready sooner rather than later.
Jordan Wicks – SP Chicago Cubs (forearm)
Jordan Wicks had another nice MLB rehab start for the @IowaCubs.
Sat 93-94, topping out at 95.2 with five strikeouts in 3.1 IP tonight with the @IowaCubs.
Allowed leadoff homer in 1st, but no hits and just one baserunner after that and ended outing retiring last 8 in a row.
— Alex Cohen (@voiceofcohen2) May 28, 2024
Wicks generated twelve wiffs as well, which helped him accumulate those five strikeouts. All in all, it was a successful outing and one that should inspire confidence moving forward. He is already slated to make at least one more rehab start before returning to the Cubs.
Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks (shoulder)
Merrill Kelly will start his throwing program next week.
— Jody Jackson (@Jody_Jackson) May 28, 2024
It’s unclear what that program is, but chances are that it will be a slow progression toward a rehab assignment and will begin with some soft-catching.
