Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, June 13, 2024. In today’s edition, we get a bombshell dropped on us, detailing the current status of players on the Mariners. Bryan Woo seems to be okay now, Andres Munoz received an injection, Ty France might be back much sooner than expected, and Jorge Polanco might be off to a rehab assignment soon. There’s that to deal with plus a whole lot more, in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Thursday, June 13, 2024.
Bryan Woo – SP Seattle Mariners (elbow)
Bryan Woo’s MRI “was perfectly clean,” Mariners GM Justin Hollander just said. No new damage, and he’ll be reinstalled in the rotation soon, potentially as early as next week.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) June 12, 2024
This surprising development came days after Woo experienced stiffness in his arm. It is shocking in the sense that the worst was expected, yet here we are with nothing new. Woo isn’t out of the clear just yet. He missed the first six weeks of the season with problems and has been on a pitch count all year long. There could be some underlying issues here that have yet to come, as the wording of “no new issues” is worrisome. As for his outcome, in the short term, he will be reinstated into the rotation likely next week, all depending on how he feels.
Andres Munoz – RP Seattle Mariners (back)
Andre Munoz had an injection in his lower back to help get the soreness out of it. He had a MRI and bone scan which didn’t reveal any major issues
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) June 12, 2024
Munoz last pitched on the weekend and his velocity was down. He has pitched just twice in June and chances are it will be awhile before he pitches again. In fact, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the Mariners retroactively place him on the Injured List to give him the rest he needs. The good news is that there are no major issues that have been identified.
Seattle Mariners – Team Update
Word on Ty France is good too. Should not require much more than the 10 days. Polanco close to being sent on a rehab assignment, Santos working toward facing hitters.
— Shannon Drayer (@shannondrayer) June 12, 2024
Ty France (foot) has been out of action with what was believed to be a long-term injury. Instead, it was revealed that he may begin to ramp up his baseball activities starting tomorrow, which is a major development for him. His return could be well within the 10 days that were expected for him. Jorge Polanco (hamstring) will test out his hamstring and will meet with the team to discuss the next steps. If he feels fine then he will depart for a rehab assignment.
Mackenzie Gore – SP Washington Nationals (nail)
Mackenzie Gore has a fingernail issue and will have his next start pushed back to Friday. Patrick Corbin will now start tomorrow’s series finale in Detroit.
— Mark Zuckerman (@MarkZuckerman) June 12, 2024
While this isn’t a major issue, it is something to monitor given that it could affect Gore when he does pitch next.
Gerrit Cole – SP New York Yankees (elbow)
Gerrit Cole will make his next rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in Rochester on Friday, per Aaron Boone.
Boone was then asked if he anticipates this being Cole's final rehab outing before returning to the #Yankees from the IL.
"We'll see."
— Max Goodman (@MaxTGoodman) June 12, 2024
Mark it on your calendars, Gerrit Cole will have a rehab start this Friday, and there’s a chance that it could be his last. It’s unclear what the team would be looking for other than volume, as he’s been very effective in all prior appearances thus far.
Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (shoulder)
Kodai Senga threw his second bullpen today. He will have two more, per Carlos Mendoza.
Senga said he expects to pitch this season. The next step is facing batters again before a rehab assignment. “He was smiling after he was done throwing,” Mendoza said. “That’s a good sign.”
— Will Sammon (@WillSammon) June 12, 2024
While it’s good news that Senga is progressing toward live batters, it’s something that all fantasy players cannot put too much faith into for their future. There is no guarantee that he won’t suffer a setback here, as he’s already gone through them multiple times already. Furthermore, the fact that the phrase “expects to pitch this season” was mentioned indicates that this injury still has a long way to go before it’s healed. Fantasy owners are encouraged not to place too many of their eggs in the Senga basket.
Edwin Diaz – RP New York Mets (shoulder)
Edwin Diaz will be the Mets’ closer upon returning tomorrow, Carlos Mendoza said.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) June 12, 2024
Be prepared.
Yainer Diaz – C Houston Astros (finger)
Joe Espada said C Yainer Diaz is improving and hit in the cage today. "He's almost there, 100 percent," Espada said. "He's a guy that could come out there today and help, but will definitely be ready for Friday if I need him to start the game."
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) June 12, 2024
Diaz is close to returning but is not quite there yet. It was speculated too that he may come back as a DH only in his return because the injury is affecting his throwing and catching. Either way, he should be back soon enough.
Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)
Astros team spokesman said Kyle Tucker probably won’t be back by Friday but he is feeling better. He hasn’t done baseball activities yet.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) June 12, 2024
It’s fair to assume that once Tucker begins baseball activities, he should be close to a return to the Astros lineup. In fact, chances are he won’t need a rehab assignment unless this absence lingers on for weeks.
Hunter Renfroe – OF Kansas City Royals (toe)
#Royals received great news on Hunter Renfroe after a CT scan and MRI showed his big toe is not fractured. It’s a major bone bruise. He will not need surgery and recovery is more likely 2-3 weeks instead of 6-8 weeks. Already playing catch today pic.twitter.com/4GbYDY810O
— Joel Goldberg (@goldbergkc) June 12, 2024
This was phenomenal news, as it was believed that Renfroe had suffered a major breakage in his foot. Instead, this big bone bruise will hopefully cut his time missed in half, meaning he should be back before the All-Star Break. This is encouraging, given the hot streak he had been on just prior to getting injured.
LaMonte Wade Jr. – OF San Francisco Giants (hamstring)
LaMonte Wade Jr. is taking grounders and has started some light running. He was supposed to be out till late June because of his strained hamstring but he is pushing hard to play in the Rickwood game, even as just a DH, a week from tomorrow.
— Andrew Baggarly (@extrabaggs) June 12, 2024
Wade Jr. has been out of action since the final week of May with a Grade 2 hamstring strain. A return by next week is a very aggressive push to return. In doing so, he risks further injury. While it’s encouraging that he is feeling better, the Giants might want to err on the side of caution here.
Jurickson Profar – OF San Diego Padres (knee)
Jurickson Profar said: “I have been dealing with this for years. Some days it’s just really bad. Yesterday was the worst day in a while.”
Said he could play today.
“I want to be there for my team.”But with Padres off tomorrow, he almost certainly will get a couple days rest. https://t.co/q0vq0hJIg1
— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) June 12, 2024
It was revealed that Profar aggravated the tendinitis in his left patellar, causing him to miss last night’s game. As such, he is hopeful to return to the lineup by Friday. It’s an odd quote though here as he has apparently been dealing with this issue for years, as it’s unclear if that affects his performance or not.
