Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, June 17, 2024. In today’s edition, Mookie Betts has fractured his hand, Corbin Carroll is getting an MRI, Bo Bichette misses time with no clarity in mind, plus so much more from the weekend in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Monday, June 17, 2024.
Mookie Betts – 2B/SS/OF Los Angeles Dodgers (fractured hand)
Mookie Betts has been diagnosed with a fractured left hand, per manager Dave Roberts pic.twitter.com/TjLWc4OXeS
— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) June 16, 2024
Devastating news for the Dodgers and fantasy owners everywhere. Betts took a pitch off of his hand and immediately exited the game. It was revealed that he suffered a fracture, though surgery will not be required to fix the problem. The timeline for his recovery is currently unknown, but it is a massive hole to fill. There should be a better idea of what’s next for him in the near future. It is expected that Miguel Vargas will be promoted and see an uptick in playing time with this injury, though the team has yet to reveal any concrete plans.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (rotator cuff)
#Dodgers RHP Yoshinobu Yamamoto was diagnosed with a rotator-cuff strain. “Not season ending,” MGR Dave Roberts said, “but it’s going to be some time.”
— Mike DiGiovanna (@MikeDiGiovanna) June 16, 2024
Yamamoto was lifted early from his start on Saturday with what was described as tricep tightness. It was revealed a day later that he did indeed suffer an injury to his rotator cuff, which is something that is more significant. The clarification of it not being season-ending indicates that it is a major injury that will require a lot of time away, (aka months). With Bobby Miler returning soon, the plan of a six-man rotation seems to be out the window now.
Trea Turner – SS Philadelphia Phillies (hamstring)
Trea Turner will be activated tomorrow, Rob Thomson said.
— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) June 16, 2024
Be prepared.
Gerrit Cole – SP New York Yankees
Yankees probable starters vs. Orioles
Tuesday: Nestor Cortes vs. Albert Suarez
Wednesday: TBD vs. Cade Povich
Thursday: Luis Gil vs. Cole Irvin
Wednesday would be Gerrit Cole's next start, whether it's in the Bronx or if it's a rehab start. He will not be fully built up.
— Chris Kirschner (@ChrisKirschner) June 16, 2024
While this is pure speculation as nothing has been formally announced, the logic of it all makes sense. As mentioned here, though, Cole has not yet been fully built up, so owners should expect a shorter outing regardless of the outcome.
Anthony Rizzo – 1B New York Yankees
Anthony Rizzo left with a right lower arm injury. He's going to see team docs and undergo imaging in NY tomorrow. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) June 17, 2024
Rizzo collided with Boston pitcher Brennan Bernardino and was forced to leave the game. He was in a considerable amount of pain, so the potential injury news is concerning. We should know more later today or tomorrow on the severity of the situation.
Merrill Kelly – SP Arizona Diamondbacks (shoulder)
Merrill Kelly's Return Pushed Out Beyond the All Star Break
The #Diamondbacks are being extremely cautious not to rush Kelly through his rehab processhttps://t.co/QNrTQGb0mf— Jack Sommers (@shoewizard59) June 15, 2024
Kelly was progressing slowly in his recovery as he had not progressed past throwing from 75 feet. The Diamondbacks had previously said that they learned a lot in the ways that they rushed back Eduardo Rodrigez, so it’s not surprising to see them take things slowly with everyone. There is no guarantee that Kelly will be ready immediately after the Break either.
Corbin Carroll – OF Arizona Diamondbacks (side)
Corbin Carroll said postgame he was feeling pretty good after running into some discomfort on the left side of his ribcage after a throw. The D-backs outfielder is optimistic about his chances to play the next series in Washington. pic.twitter.com/HAaiyo58Yl
— Arizona Sports (@AZSports) June 17, 2024
Carroll made a running catch in the outfield on Sunday and grimaced afterward. It was revealed that he felt discomfort in his side and will have a precautionary MRI to ensure that no significant damage has been done. He insists that he is feeling okay, but time will tell.
Kyle Bradish – SP Baltimore Orioles (elbow)
We have made the following roster moves: pic.twitter.com/z2s64Yibx1
— Baltimore Orioles (@Orioles) June 15, 2024
Look for the team to take things very slowly with Bradish, who is back on the Injured List with an elbow injury that could be season-ending. Stay tuned.
Michael Harris – OF Atlanta Braves (oblique)
#Braves’ Michael Harris II has a Grade 2 strain of his left hamstring, MRI showed. No timetable for return. Snitker: “Those things are all different and it takes a long time to get where they can torque it.”
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) June 15, 2024
Harris was placed on the Injured List almost immediately after his injury and will subsequently miss some time here. It’s unclear as to a timetable because oblique injuries are tricky in how everyone heals from them. A Grade 2 strain is significant enough to warrant months of time away.
Max Scherzer – SP Texas Rangers (back)
Bruce Bochy said today that as long as Max Scherzer has no issues with recovering from his start on Saturday, he should join the Rangers rotation.
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) June 16, 2024
Be prepared.
Josh Jung – 3B Texas Rangers (wrist)
Josh Jung went 2 for 3 with an RBI single in rehab debut
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) June 17, 2024
Great debut for Jung who is coming back from a fractured wrist injury that has caused him to miss all season. His only out of the game was a 103 mph groundball, which is good to see given how long it takes power to return to a batter after any wrist injuries.
William Contreras – C Milwaukee Brewers (concussion)
William Contreras is being evaluated for a concussion, per Pat Murphy.
— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) June 16, 2024
Contreras got hit at the plate on the final play of the game to secure a win. All reporters were unable to talk to him or the team regarding any updates as he was being evaluated for a concussion at that time.
Justin Verlander – SP Houston Astros (neck)
Astros GM Dana Brown told the team's pregame radio show that the hope is Justin Verlander could pitch either Wednesday or Thursday against the White Sox.
— Chandler Rome (@Chandler_Rome) June 16, 2024
Verlander was pulled from starting this weekend because of neck spasms, but he did play catch yesterday. As such, he had his original start date pushed back a few days and will now likely return to face the White Sox midweek. Stay tuned for updates to ensure that he has cleared this neck hurdle.
Tommy Edman – 2B/SS/OF St. Louis Cardinals (wrist)
#STLCards OF Tommy Edman will join the club’s Complex League team and/or Single-A Palm Beach this next week to get ABs and reps in the field. He has yet to play this season following wrist surgery in October.
— John Denton (@JohnDenton555) June 16, 2024
Edman’s progression has been slow and unsteady, but at least now he will be closer to getting back into the Cardinals’ lineup. From the potential of missing one month of the season to now, he looks posied to returning after the All-Star Break.
Bryan Woo – SP Seattle Mariners (forearm)
Bryan Woo is set to return to the mound Wednesday in Cleveland.
Bryce Miller will start series opener vs. Guardians on Tuesday, and Luis Castillo is scheduled for Thursday.
— Adam Jude (@A_Jude) June 16, 2024
Woo is returning to the Mariners’ rotation days after the kerfuffle that left him injured and then healthy. His situation is one to monitor as the team has and will likely continue to be cautious with how they handle his workload going forward.
Luis Rengifo – MI Los Angeles Angels (wrist)
Rengifo is day to day.
He said he expects to be able to play tomorrow.
X-rays showed just a contusion. https://t.co/YMhxANe0H3
— Jeff Fletcher (@JeffFletcherOCR) June 16, 2024
Consider Rengifo DTD, with the chance of returning sooner rather than later.
Kodai Senga – SP New York Mets (shoulder)
Carlos Mendoza says Kodai Senga will throw his next bullpen session on Wednesday and should "hopefully" face hitters after that: pic.twitter.com/abvU96AetV
— SNY (@SNYtv) June 16, 2024
Senga threw a two-inning bullpen session this weekend and will hopefully be able to do it again later this week. He continues to show progress, but fantasy owners are reminded of how many times he has regressed since the injury to not get their hopes up just yet.
Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays (calf)
Bo Bichette (right calf) was feeling better today, per Blue Jays manager John Schneider: “Hopefully it’s not too much longer.”
Asked if Bichette was available off the bench today, Schneider: “Maybe.”
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) June 16, 2024
John Schneider gave the information here almost as if he felt like he had to and not because he knew exactly what he was talking about. For what it’s worth, Bichette did not come off the bench and play at all yesterday. It is unclear what the next steps are, but it appears that the team believes he is close to returning.
