Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, July 10, 2024. In today’s edition, Zack Wheeler left his start with back tightness, Tyler Glasnow heads to the Injured List with a back injury of his own, and Xander Bogaerts has a return date in mind. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, July 10, 2024.
Zack Wheeler – SP Philadelphia Phillies (back)
Rob Thomson said Zack Wheeler will probably make his next start. Said his back tightened up after sitting a while in the fourth inning.
Nothing to be concerned about. Phew.
— Luke Arcaini (@ArcainiLuke) July 10, 2024
Wheeler was cruising along in his start, striking out seven batters in only five innings of work, but it was the long wait of the fourth inning that caused his back to tense up. Nobody on the team is concerned, Wheeler included, and he is expected to make his next start, though anything can happen before then. How he feels today will be a key factor into projecting whether or not he will in fact pitch in his next outing.
David Bednar – RP Pittsburgh Pirates (oblique)

The reason for Bednar’s assignment in Double-A Altoona as opposed to Triple-A Indianapolis was purely weather-related and nothing more. He said afterward that he felt good and that this was a day-by-day sort of situation. It would appear that he is poised for at least one more outing before returning, but with the All-Star Break next week, multiple appearances could be in the cards to keep him fresh and loose.
Triston Casas – 1B Boston Red Sox (internal)
Casas is still taking dry swings. He will progress to hitting off a tee this week.
— Alex Speier (@alexspeier) July 9, 2024
Casas advancing to hitting a ball would be another step forward to his return, as this would allow his body to take on contact. Slowly, but surely, he is getting there.
Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update
Jordan Montgomery, Eduardo Rodriguez and Merrill Kelly all threw bullpens today, Torey Lovullo said. They all told him they felt good. Montgomery still expected to be the first of those three to make it back from the injured list.
— Nick Piecoro (@nickpiecoro) July 9, 2024
Tuesday was a big day for the Diamondbacks, who put their ailing rotation to the test and checked on their conditions. Jordan Montgomery (knee) felt good afterward, leading one to believe that he could be back the soonest, as indicated above. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, as the team may want him to work on his mechanics after struggling throughout the first half of the season. As for Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder), his comeback has been a slow one, but this was a good step forward. He has not pitched at all in 2024, and thus, his rehab assignment, whenever that is, will be lengthy. Finally, Merrill Kelly (shoulder) is looking to return to the Diamondbacks after leaving the team in April. There have been rumblings of him coming back in about a month’s time. As for yesterday’s bullpens, there were no reports of how many pitches anyone threw.
Houston Astros – Team Update
Joe Espada on JV and Tucker.
On Verlander: “JV is doing well. He is playing catch and he’s feeling better after everyday he plays catch.”
On Tucker: “Kyle did some jogging, his hitting looks better in the cages… but we want to see more from in the next few days”@SportsMT
— Michael Schwab (@michaelschwab13) July 9, 2024
Good news here for Justin Verlander (neck) who is also increasing the intensity of his throws every day. He continues to get closer to a return but still has some hurdles to clear. As for Kyle Tucker (shin), the news here isn’t as positive, as the team has expected him to be further along than he’s been. Regardless of where he is now, he is expected to return after the All-Star Break, and there will be plenty of updates before then.
Xander Bogaerts – 2B San Diego Padres (shoulder)
It appears Xander Bogaerts remains on track to return for final series before All-Star break. Will likely face live pitching at Petco Park and play a game or two in Lake Elsinore before that.
— Kevin Acee (@sdutKevinAcee) July 9, 2024
Bogaerts has not played in a minor league game since Sunday, but it appears that he is about ready to return to the Padres this weekend. Be prepared.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angels Dodgers (back)
The Dodgers rotation has suffered another injury
Tyler Glasnow is going on the IL because of back tightness, Dave Roberts said. It flared up on Glasnow during catch play Sunday
Team’s initial hope is it’s a minor issue. Roberts said Glasnow could be back shortly after ASB
— Jack Harris (@ByJackHarris) July 9, 2024
Glasnow has surrendered 10 runs over his last two outings, which has spanned nine innings of work. This sort of porous output is uncharacteristic of who he is as a pitcher, so the decision to place him on the Injured List seems like a must right now. That, alongside the All-Star Break, will give him a chance for a fresh start for the stretch run.
Clayton Kershaw – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (shoulder)
Per #Dodgers Dave Roberts, Clayton Kershaw will make his next rehab start on Saturday with OKC. Three innings.
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) July 9, 2024
Kershaw’s rehab has been on hold, but this will officially allow him the chance to get back on track.
Bryan Woo – SP Seattle Mariners (hamstring)
Bryan Woo will be activated from the IL this weekend in Anaheim, Scott Servais just said. He didn’t specify which of the four games he’ll start though.
His rotation turn comes up Friday, but they could conceivably re-slot after yesterday’s off-day.
— Daniel Kramer (@DKramer_) July 9, 2024
Woo has been handling this hamstring injury well as he continues to progress toward a return. It looks like that time will come this weekend. Due to this injury and his unrepaired forearm injury from earlier in the season, chances are that he won’t work too deep into this game.
Dominic Canzone – OF Seattle Mariners (groin)
Dom Canzone felt discomfort in his groin/adductor area making a catch on Sunday. It didn’t feel great running the bases tonight. He’s getting a MRI tomorrow.
— Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) July 10, 2024
It sounds like Canzone will miss some time, one way or another.
Jonathan India – 2B Cincinnati Reds (knee)
Jonathan India scratched from Reds lineup because of bruised left knee.
Espinal now at second base. Steer leading off.
— Gordon Wittenmyer (@GDubMLB) July 9, 2024
There was no word on the severity of this injury, or for how much time India may miss. Stay tuned.
Yimi Garcia – RP Toronto Blue Jays (elbow, neck)
Yimi García is scheduled to pitch again tomorrow in Triple-A. He was scheduled for today, but has a stiff neck, so they pushed it back a day.
If all goes well, that should be all García needs before returning. #BlueJays
— Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) July 10, 2024
Garcia has been rehabbing and recovering from an elbow ailment, and this neck issue is a wrinkle in that return. If he doesn’t pitch today, then his neck can be considered a more serious issue, but until then, this can be thought of as a small bump in the road.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa – INF/OF Toronto Blue Jays (knee)
Isiah Kiner-Falefa (knee) is resuming baseball activity today with some light running and throwing
— Arden Zwelling (@ArdenZwelling) July 10, 2024
Kiner-Falefa has been out of action since the first of July and has only now begun baseball activities. His injury was described as a week-to-week issue, so it might be at least another week before he returns to the Blue Jays.
Giancarlo Stanton – OF New York Yankees (hamstring)
Carlos Rodón is on the bump for the Yankees tonight. @M_Marakovits previews the southpaw's outing and provides an update on Giancarlo Stanton during the Clubhouse Report. #YANKSonYES pic.twitter.com/yQAb3nyKa0
— YES Network (@YESNetwork) July 9, 2024
Of note, the update on Stanton is at the end of the above video clip. In it, Stanton is described as ramping up his baseball activities with the hope of him either returning to the Yankees or beginning a rehab assignment after the All-Star Break.
Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (Tommy John Surgery)
Jacob deGrom threw a 30-pitch bullpen today and mixed in his changeup, but he’s still “a ways away” according to Bruce Bochy.
— Shawn McFarland (@McFarland_Shawn) July 9, 2024
This is a good progression from deGrom, but he is a potential option for the Rangers in the final month of the season, if that.
