MLB Injury Report: Bo Bichette Back to the IL?

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Saturday, July 20, 2024. In today’s edition, Bo Bichette hurt himself while running the bases yesterday, we got good news on Mookie Betts and great news on Mike Trout. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report for Saturday, July 20, 2024.

Bo Bichette – SS Toronto Blue Jays (calf)

As seen in the video above, the limp was evident almost immediately when Bichette tried to run to first base. The hope is that this isn’t serious enough to warrant a trip to the Injured List, but given that he missed time before the All-Star Break with a similar injury, this is likely going to cost him some time. He was set to have an MRI to determine the damage and we should know more in the coming days. It will be interesting to see how this helps or hurts the Jays as they head into the trade deadline.

Joey Votto – 1B Toronto Blue Jays (ankle)

Votto was about to return to Triple-A Buffalo after a stint on the Minor League Injured List, but now that is likely on hold. It remains to be seen how serious this issue is and if Votto will ever get a chance to play for Toronto.

Los Angeles Angels – Team Update

This is an aggressive push by the Angels to get Mike Trout (knee) back into their lineup. The hope is that he can begin a rehab assignment in the coming weeks and possibly be back shortly afterward. He had always targeted a late July return, and while it’s still entirely possible, perhaps an early August return is more likely. Either way, it’s great news, assuming all goes well without any setbacks. As for Luis Rengifo (wrist), it’s good to see him performing some baseball activities, which could mean that he is just about ready for either a rehab assignment or a return to the Angels.

Tyler Glasnow – SP Tampa Bay Rays (back)

Glasnow’s 58 pitches seem to be more than enough to warrant a return in the near future. The hope is that he will be ready to play the Giants on Wednesday.

Mookie Betts – INF/OF Los Angeles Dodgers (hand)

Betts was out on the field independently playing catch yesterday with his broken hand. The news of his progression here is great, but he still has a ways to go before a return is even considered. Of note, it was said that once his hand is at about 85 percent healed, it’s then that he will begin to grip a bat. He was set to undergo testing yesterday to determine exactly where he is physically.

Max Muncy – 3B Los Angeles Dodgers (oblique)

This is somewhat of a progression here for Muncy, who was able to swing at some soft-tossing on Thursday. It is discouraging though that with every update we get on Muncy, none of them offer any semblance of a timeline for a return. He has been ruled out for the remainder of this month, though with just over a week left in it, that’s no surprise.

Walker Buehler – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (hip)

It would appear that Buehler is just about ready to return to the Dodgers, though a rehab outing is likely on tap before then.

Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (Tommy John Surgery)

This was a good step forward by deGrom, who for the first time was able to incorporate different pitches into the mix while throwing a bullpen. He will likely need to do more of this with even more pitches before upgrading his work to live batters. From there a rather lengthy rehab assignment is on tap. He is still trending for a September return if all goes well.

Tyler Mahle – SP Texas Rangers (Tommy John Surgery)

It’s important to note that manager Bruce Bochy did say that Mahle was very very close to returning, so this could be his last rehab outing before making his 2024 debut with the Rangers.

Tampa Bay Rays – Team Update

There is a good chance that this is the final rehab outing for Jeffrey Springs (Tommy John Surgery) before making his 2024 debut with the Rays. As for Drew Rasmussen (elbow), this will be his first of many rehab starts. Both pitchers are likely to endure similar paths and lengths of rehab outings, just at different times.

New York Mets – Team Update

This will likely be the final rehab start for Kodai Senga (shoulder), especially if he fulfills the goals that have been laid out above. As for Starling Marte (knee), he was shut down earlier, so a return to anything baseball-related is welcomed, though it would appear that the pain is still relevant and won’t go away anytime soon.

Jacob Wilson – SS Oakland Athletics (hamstring)

Wilson was forced to endure the roller coaster of emotions last night, making his MLB debut, getting his first MLB hit, and then injuring his hamstring all within a few innings of each other. Fingers (and toes) are crossed that this isn’t a serious injury and that he can return soon enough. The team should have a better sense of what needs to be done later today.

Tommy Edman – INF/OF St. Louis Cardinals

Edman had just started his rehab assignment when the injury to the ankle occurred. This, alongside the proclamation that he would need to play defensively at all of his positions before a return to the Cardinals, gives pause to a possible call-up in the near future. He has yet to play any position in the field during any of his rehab games thus far.

Giancarlo Stanton – OF New York Yankees (hamstring)

Stanton was seen here running the bases and has resumed all baseball activities. It seems quite possible for him to be back very soon without a rehab assignment, as was proclamated earlier this week by manager Aaron Boone. Stay tuned.

Colorado Rockies – Team Update

Of fantasy relevance, Nolan Jones (back) taking batting practice yesterday could be a good sign that he is trending back toward a return. That said, with no timetable, it’s anyone’s guess as to when. Also, Jordan Beck (hand) was rumored to return around the All-Star Break, but that would seem to be by the wayside. For now, consider him to be ready in August, likely after a rehab assignment at some point.

Philadelphia Phillies – Team Update

It is looking like the Phillies will be at full strength by this time next week barring any unforeseen circumstances.
