Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Tuesday, July 30, 2024. In today’s report, the Diamondbacks have mixed news, as Christian Walker may have a significant oblique injury that could keep him out of action for a while. In contrast to that, both Eduardo Rodriguez and Merrill Kelly may be options out of rotation next weekend, indicating that both are close and on track to return. All that and so much more are in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Christian Walker – 1B Arizona Diamondbacks (oblique)
Torey Lovullo said his concern level for Christian Walker's oblique injury was not minimal. pic.twitter.com/S4FvBLz8JK

It sounds like Walker will miss time on the Injured List, and it could be significant. Walker injured himself after his first at-bat last night and will get some imaging done today. The hope, as Lovullo said, is that they get good news, but from the sound of it, he may need some time to recover.
Arizona Diamondbacks – Team Update
Merrill Kelly and Eduardo Rodriguez will throw sim games on Wednesday, Torey Lovullo said.
It will be 3 innings/50 pitches for Kelly, 4/55-60 for E-Rod.
Lovullo said that one of them could be an option to pitch in the Cleveland series next week.

Both Merrill Kelly (shoulder) and Eduardo Rodriguez (shoulder) threw over the weekend and it would appear that those sessions went well for this news to break. From the look of the proposed workload of the sim games, Rodriguez might be the one that’s closer to a return, but overall both seem well on their way to being inserted back into the Diamondbacks’ rotation soon enough.
Texas Rangers – Team Update
Rangers made eleven transactions today. Among them, a couple injury-related moves.
– Jon Gray to the 15-day IL (right groin strain)
– Evan Carter transferred to the 60-day IL (lower back strain)— Michael Bier (@MichaelJBier) July 29, 2024
Jon Gray (groin) missed Sunday’s start because of an injury he sustained in warmups. The severity is unknown at this time but still bad enough to warrant a trip to the Injured List. As for Evan Carter (back), he was shut down from baseball activities over the weekend and went to see a back specialist regarding his condition. There won’t be much more to do with him until the results are known, but all outcomes are seemingly on the table.
Francisco Alvarez – C New York Mets (shoulder)
Francisco Alvarez has been dealing with a sore left shoulder, Carlos Mendoza said. He’s available off the bench today but they hope to give him the day fully off.
— Tim Healey (@timbhealey) July 29, 2024
It’s the second out of the last three games that Alvarez has missed, as well as his third of the team’s last seven. The young catcher is also in the midst of a slump that has seen him go 4-for-31 with eleven strikeouts. He’s reeling now and perhaps some time off will give him what he needs to get himself back on track.
Randy Arozarena – OF Seattle Mariners (undisclosed)
Randy Arozarena left tonight’s game out of precaution after colliding with the wall in foul territory and with the score being where it was, Scott Servais just said.
But Arozarena told Servais that he should be good to go tomorrow.

The hope is that he left the game out of an abundance of caution because the game was out of reach and nothing more. We should find out more today with some updates, but it is looking like the score had more to do with this removal than anything else.
Yu Darvish – SP San Diego Padres (personal)
Padres are giving ace starter Yu Darvish support and space. They love him, and admire him as an “honorable man” for volunteering to go on the Restricted List. The Padres do still have hope for Yu to return this summer/season.
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) July 29, 2024
Darvish has been away from the team for a personal reason regarding his family. There have been some talks about him not returning at all this season while he deals with whatever situation is causing this turmoil. The team has respected his privacy and will continue to do so. As for the logistics of a return, he last pitched at the end of May and would need time to ramp himself back up. There is a legitimate chance that he has thrown his final pitch of the season.
Reynaldo Lopez – SP Atlanta Braves (forearm)
Reynaldo López MRI came back clean and he’s day-to-day, #Braves hoping they don’t even have to put him on the injured list.
— David O'Brien (@DOBrienATL) July 29, 2024
It was reported that Lopez was already feeling better and that there was a significant improvement in just one day. If he were to avoid the Injured List, he would be slated to start this week. All things considered, that feels like a stretch, but the news is as shocking as it is positive. Here’s hoping that this is something minor and that he can return to the mound sooner rather than later.
Taijuan Walker – SP Philadelphia Phillies (finger)
Kolby Allard will remain in Phillies rotation for a start in Seattle this week, but Taijuan Walker is progressing. He will go to Double-A Reading for a minor-league start Wednesday.
— Matt Gelb (@MattGelb) July 29, 2024
Walker last pitched on June 21, more than five weeks ago for a blister and right-hand index finger inflammation. He is now ready for a rehab assignment. With so much time off, he may need more than one start to be ready.
Jose Miranda – 3B Minnesota Twins (head)
"He is doing really well … Everything is going according to plan." #MNTwins manager Rocco Baldelli provided an injury update on Jose Miranda after a scary situation on Sunday pic.twitter.com/NKcGGHoOs8
— Bally Sports North (@BallySportsNOR) July 29, 2024
It sounds like Miranda is on the right path to making his way back to the team, as all updates have been positive progressions forward. As manager Rocco Baldelli said, now it’s about getting him on his feet and moving around, which will allow him to get acclimated back into game shape.
Vaughn Grissom – 2B Boston Red Sox (hamstring)
Interesting development here, though he has gone 6-for-26 with only one stolen base since returning to the field earlier this month. Reports have said that he has gained weight, gotten stronger, and is getting closer to being his best self. Still, it looks like that might not be enough for the surprisingly contending Red Sox, who may still trade for an infielder before the deadline.
