Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, August 8, 2024. In today’s edition, Joe Ryan may miss some time, Tyler O’Neill’s illness sends him over to the Injured List, and Julio Rodriguez continues to progress forward. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)
Correa has made great gains in recent weeks, but he has yet to clear the hurdle of being able to sprint. Once that happens, he will be on his way back to the Twins. That said, with his absence growing in days, he may require a rehab assignment once he is officially cleared, as we are bordering on one full month of inactivity.
Joe Ryan – SP Minnesota Twins (tricep)
Rocco Baldelli also said that Joe Ryan would likely miss a little time here because of the injury. It’s hard to say much, not knowing the severity of the issue here, but it would appear that whatever the case may be, Ryan may be headed for a trip to the Injured List. The team should reveal specifics on the actual injury itself, but for now, consider Ryan to be out of your lineups for at least fifteen days.
Grayson Rodriguez – SP Baltimore Orioles (lat)
Brandon Hyde said Grayson Rodriguez has a mild strain, and the Orioles are optimistic about the timeline of recovery. An exact timeline is still to be determined
— Andy Kostka (@afkostka) August 7, 2024
The Orioles’ rotation takes a big hit here with Rodriguez out of action for quite some time. The team is hopeful for a quick recovery, it’s worth noting that the last time he suffered a lat strain he missed three months back in 2022 while in the minor leagues. While both instances should be treated independently of each other, it at least provides some framework for a potential timeline.
Boston Red Sox – Team Update
Lot going on:
O’Neill to the IL
Pivetta getting skipped next start.
Martin activated
Valdez recalled
Booser optionedO’Neill is sick and has in infection in his lower left leg. They think he will be ready when eligible.
Pivetta’s metrics have dipped. No injury. Needs a rest
— Pete Abraham (@PeteAbe) August 7, 2024
It was a tough day for the Red Sox, just when you thought that things were going their way. Tyler O’Neill (leg) is sick, but it turns out that it’s an infection in his lower left leg and not something like the flu. There weren’t many details regarding this setback other than it had gotten worse over the last little while. Here’s hoping that things do improve quickly. As for Nick Pivetta, it was the lowered velocity in his last outing that alerted the team that something could be wrong. They hope that additional rest will give him what he needs to get back to the pitcher he once was. That being said, if that is not the case and there’s more to it, he could go on the Injured List.
Jurickson Profar – OF San Diego Padres (knee)
X-Rays negative on Jurickson Profar, Mike Shildt said. Day to day (like the rest of us).
— AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell) August 8, 2024
Profar did his best to remain in the game but was ultimately replaced late in the game. The good news is that there is no structural damage and that he should be fine soon enough. He may need a day or two before returning.
Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)
Kyle Tucker likley won't meet the team in Boston because the team likes the work he's been doing in Houston.
Espada said Tucker is not able to sprint, but he's jogging.
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) August 7, 2024
A day later, it was revealed that Tucker had been doing great and that his workload was strenuous. Now we learn that he wouldn’t travel with the team and that he still can not sprint. Rubik’s Cubes are easier to figure out than this.
Julio Rodriguez – OF Seattle Mariners (high ankle sprain)
Rodriguez continues to improve daily. It’s good to know that swinging a bat is not an issue at all. He also worked through some lateral movements yesterday and lightly jogged around the base paths. Until he is ready to spring and move smoothly in a lateral way, he is not ready to return. There has been talk of him being a DH as well when he does return so that he wouldn’t have to play in the field.
Cody Bellinger – OF Chicago Cubs (knee)
Cody Bellinger is dealing with a sore hamstring after stepping on first base awkwardly last night and hyperextending his knee.
Counsell said they’ll see how he feels as day progressed but wanted to give Bellinger a day off because of it. Cubs also off tomorrow.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) August 7, 2024
With Thursday off, the team wanted to see if consecutive days of rest would be enough for Bellinger to return for the weekend. Stay tuned.
Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Rangers (elbow)
Jacob deGrom will face hitters on Thursday. Not a drill. https://t.co/2XaTrKhfRO
— Evan Grant (@Evan_P_Grant) August 7, 2024
This is a big day for deGrom, as it will be the first time he faces live batters since undergoing surgery. The hope is that he can do so without issue and progress to a longer session in a few days.
Tanner Bibee – SP Cleveland Guardians (shoulder)
Cleveland's starting pitching plan…
Today: Ben Lively & Carlos Carrasco
Friday: Alex Cobb & TBD
Saturday: Gavin Williams
Sunday: TBD (but Tanner Bibee if his bullpen session tomorrow goes well)— Zack Meisel (@ZackMeisel) August 7, 2024
Today’s bullpen will be something to monitor. If all goes well, he looks to be in play for Sunday’s game. Stay tuned.
Austin Hays – OF Philadelphia Phillies (hamstring)
Thomson on Austin Hays: “We’ll check him tomorrow. He felt [his hamstring] grab. We’re not really sure.”
— Alex Coffey (@byalexcoffey) August 8, 2024
Hays left yesterday’s game after pulling up lame at first base. As mentioned, he will undergo testing today to determine the severity of the situation at hand.
Los Angeles Dodgers – Team Update
Max Muncy and Tommy Edman are expected to join OKC on rehab assignment this weekend. At least a week before joining #Dodgers
— Bill Plunkett (@billplunkettocr) August 8, 2024
Both Max Muncy (oblique) and Tommy Edman (wrist) will need at least a week of games before being cleared to go to the Dodgers. With Edman already having had a handful of rehab games, it would seem appropriate to assume he will be back first. That said, his injury situation has been difficult to navigate all season, so anything is possible.
