MLB Injury Report: Joe Ryan Done for Season?

Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Saturday, August 10, 2024. In today’s edition, the Twins will need to figure out a way to survive without one of their best pitchers, as Joe Ryan will be out of action for quite some time. Also, Mike Trout has successful surgery, Mookie Betts makes a sacrifice for the greater good, and CJ Abrams has back spasms. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.

MLB Injury Report

Joe Ryan – SP Minnesota Twins (shoulder)

This is devastating news out of Minnesota, as Ryan’s injury is much worse than what was first believed. With his injury costing him anywhere from weeks to months, it’s fair to believe that his contributions in fantasy will be minimal the rest of the way. In redraft leagues, he is borderline droppable, while in dynasty he becomes a good buy-low option for 2025.

Brooks Lee – SS Minnesota Twins (triceps)

Lee’s shoulder had been bothering him for a while, which cost him some time earlier in the week. Now we understand that it’s something more serious than an irritation and that he will miss at least tend days. The team doesn’t seem overly worried, but his recovery in the coming days is something to monitor.

Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)

Correa has been out of action for plantar fasciitis, which has hampered him for over a year now. From the sounds of it, he wants to be rid of it once and for all, so he’s taking his time to ensure that happens. Meanwhile, fantasy owners should wait patiently for him to return, despite the fact that when he’s healthy and plays well, he’s one of the best.

CJ Abrams – SS Washington Nationals (back)

The spasms were enough to keep Abrams out of the lineup last night, though going forward it’s unclear what’s next for him. Stay tuned.

Mike Trout – OF Los Angeles Angels (knee)

Trout will now spend the offseason trying to get himself healthy and attempt to become the once dominant and stable force he was for many years. There has been no word on a timeline just yet, though we also haven’t heard that the start of next season will be delayed either.

Cleveland Guardians – Team Update

Great news on Tanner Bibee (shoulder) who gets the start on Sunday. As for Sam Hentges (shoulder), the Guardians’ bullpen takes a hit here as we get close to the end of the season.

Austin Hays – OF Philadelphia Phillies (hamstring)

Hays has gone to the Injured twice in 2024 and has also suffered other ailments throughout the year. The hope here is that he can return and help the Phillies march toward the World Series.

Triston Casas – 1B Boston Red Sox (internal)

Interesting development here as, according to manager Alex Cora, it’ll be up to Casas himself to determine if and when he returns. Thus far in his rehab, he has been able to get on base with consistency, just not with much power. He did have some interesting comments a while back stating that whenever he swings it feels like he’s getting stabbed in the stomach. Not encouraging words, but we shall see how long it is before he returns with the Red Sox. Chances are by this time next week he will be back.

Trevor Story – SS Boston Red Sox (shoulder)

This is a massive step forward for Story who has missed most of the season with a shoulder injury. How his body responds during and after the batting practice session will likely help determine when he returns and if it will be this season or next. His comeback would be a huge boost in morale as the Red Sox make a push for a playoff spot.

Matt McLain – INF Cincinnati Reds (shoulder)

McLain was hoping to begin his rehab assignment on Monday, but it appears now that it won’t happen. With no news on a rescheduled day, this might mean that he had a significant setback in his recovery. While it’s prudent to wait for updates on this situation, the more time that passes equals the likelihood that he can be dropped in redraft leagues.

Joshua Lowe – OF Tampa Bay Rays (knee)

Despite missing yesterday’s game, it’s a very good sign that Lowe was out on the field testing his knee out the way that he did. Missing a game or two is expected and not the end of the world. If he does not return by the end of the weekend, then it would be time to worry. Until then, make other plans in your lineups.

Detroit Tigers – Team Update

Massive update here, so let’s dig in. Firstly, Kerry Carpenter (lumbar spine stress fracture) has gone 1-for-7 with three strikeouts before last night, so the Tigers may want him to get on track before he comes back up. Meanwhile, Riley Greene (hamstring) will hopefully succeed in his base-running session which could go a long way in allowing him to either return or start a rehab assignment. Casey Mize (hamstring) will be looking to go deeper into his next game, as the last time out there he went just 2.1 innings long. Also, Reese Olson (shoulder) continues to throw on flat ground and increase his volume and distancing, but he’s running out of time to make a serious impact in redraft leagues. Finally, Matt Vierliong (back) could be back at some point this weekend, assuming things don’t get any worse.

Luis Arraez – INF San Diego Padres (thumb)

Arraez now has a torn ligament in his thumb, which may be the reason for his recent slump to see his batting average drop ten points. He’s still getting on base and hitting, just not as well as we’re used to seeing. There should be more details on this situation before today’s game. Stay tuned.

Hunter Harvey – RP Kansas City Royals (back)

Harvey hasn’t pitched in almost a week since getting a save for the Royals last Sunday. Now we know that it’s because of tightness in his back. There’s been no indication either way of him heading to or avoiding the Injured List.

Mookie Betts – INF/OF Los Angeles Dodgers (hand)

Betts is likely returning this Monday, so be sure to activate him when you can.
