Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Thursday, August 29, 2024. In today’s edition, Tyler Glasnow lines up for a big day tomorrow, which could determine his rest-of-season value. Also, Nick Lodolo might miss the rest of the season while Byron Buxton has some work to do before entering a rehab assignment. All that and much more is in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)
Tyler Glasnow will resume catch play on Friday in Arizona, Dave Roberts said. Didn’t come out of his first throwing session last week great, so this next one will be big to determine next steps.
— Fabian Ardaya (@FabianArdaya) August 28, 2024
The reports yesterday were that Glasnow has been slow to recover from this latest injury which has caused some concern to grow over the last little while. The expectation when he first went to the Injured List was that he would return within the minimum 15-day time frame with no real questions as to how or why. Now we are almost two weeks into it and he has yet to resume throwing. He will do so tomorrow, and that will determine the next steps. If he feels good after tomorrow’s session, chances are that he can give fantasy owners about three weeks of production. However, if tomorrow’s session has concerns and soreness, there is a chance that he will miss the rest of the season to be ready for the postseason. Stay tuned.
Freddie Freeman – 1B Los Angeles Dodgers (finger)
No Freddie Freeman again tonight for the Dodgers. Dave Roberts left open the possibility yesterday that Freeman doesn’t play in this series.

The team continues to manage his finger injury, giving him the time needed to heal properly. One has to wonder if more of this will happen down the stretch this season, as the team operates with October in mind.
Yoshinobu Yamamoto – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (tricep)
Yoshinobu Yamamoto completes two innings during tonight's rehab assignment.

Yamamoto’s velocity was down a bit in this outing, but that could be because this was his first game in a long time. He will look to improve on the pitch count and quality next time out, but 31 pitches is a good start.
Nick Lodolo – SP Cincinnati Reds (finger)
Given the state of the Reds and Lodolo’s injury history this season, it would make sense for everyone involved to take their time and ensure that he has the best chance of coming back healthy next year.
Byron Buxton – OF Minnesota Twins (hip)
Buxton last played more than two weeks ago, and this kind of quote speaks volumes about the struggles that he has had over his career. He plays hard while on the field and unfortunately gets injured. The time needed to recover from these injuries always amounts to a season of disappointment and questions going forward.
Ben Brown – SP/RP Chicago Cubs (neck)
Ben Brown remains at the Cubs’ complex in Arizona, but he’s still not doing anything pitching wise. Counsell said it’s not likely Brown will be back this season.
— Meghan Montemurro (@M_Montemurro) August 28, 2024
Despite the extent of this injury, Brown remains a good buy-low in all dynasty formats heading into next year, as all signs point to him being fully recovered from this ailment heading into the 2025 season.
Pittsburgh Pirates – Team Update
Lots of injury updates today.
➡️ Hunter Stratton had surgery to repair a patella tendon rupture. His recovery time is 7-10 months.
➡️ Marco Gonzales will have surgery to repair a flexor tendon in his left elbow in September. As of now, his expected recovery time will be 9-12…
— Noah Hiles (@_NoahHiles) August 28, 2024
This might be the biggest injury update from the season. For fantasy purposes, Marco Gonzales (elbow) will undergo surgery to repair a flexor tendon in his left elbow, likely erasing any chance he had of contributing during the 2025 season. Meanwhile, Andrew McCutchen (knee) feels ready to return, but the team will advise on his next steps. Given the state of the team and his years of experience, they may just his intuition and let him play. Also, Joey Bart (hamstring), while still in the early stages of his recovery, is aiming to return this season, as the injury is considered mild. Also, Endy Rodriguez (elbow) remains a good buy-low option for 2025 as he could be the team’s everyday catcher if things go his way heading into next season, though the aforementioned Joey Bart might have something to say about that. Finally, Ke’Bryan Hayes (back) continues to be evaluated, which could mean that the team is exploring other options to fully understand this chronic condition of his.
New York Yankees – Team Update
Aaron Boone said Clarke Schmidt will probably make another rehab start after tonight. Nothing set though.
Luis Gil will likely make a rehab start in 5 days. #Yankees
— Gary Phillips (@GaryHPhillips) August 28, 2024
Clarke Schmidt (lat) ended up throwing three innings of one-run baseball last night while striking out five batters and walking one. He tossed 58 pitches in this game and his velocity was back to where it was before the injury. Overall, it was a very encouraging outing. With one more start to go, he could be back as soon as next weekend. As for Lui Gil (back), he has been trending in the right direction for a while. His last session was a successful live batting session two days ago. If all goes well with this one outing early next week, he may be ready to return shortly after that.
