Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Monday, September 9, 2024. In today’s edition, Teoscar Hernandez had an up-and-down weekend, Luis Castillo may miss some time with an injury, and both Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer looked dominant this weekend. All of that and much more is in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Teoscar Hernandez – OF Los Angeles Dodgers (ankle)
Some really good news for the #Dodgers: Teoscar Hernandez said MRI and CT scan both came back negative and he hopes to be back on the field Monday or Tuesday.
— Juan Toribio (@juanctoribio) September 7, 2024
On Friday night, Hernandez took a pitch off of his ankle and had to be helped off of the field. The team feared the worst, but alas on Saturday they received this positive news. While he has yet to return, he was spotted doing some stretching, fielding, and light jogging on Sunday before the team’s game against the Guardians. It remains to be seen when exactly he will return, but the difference in feeling from where we were on Friday night and where we were yesterday was like night and day.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)

— DodgersBeat (@DodgersBeat) September 7, 2024
It’s a good sign that Glasnow was throwing from the mound here, as this 25-pitch session was his first in a long time. It remains to be seen what the plan is going forward and if he will return to the Dodgers after live BP sessions. We are approaching the middle of September, and time is running out on his opportunities to contribute.
Luis Castillo – SP Seattle Mariners (hamstring)
Mariners report Castillo was removed from the game with a left hamstring strain.
— Shannon Drayer (@shannondrayer) September 8, 2024
Castillo was in immediate pain after throwing a pitch, and the initial thought was that his ankle was the injured body part. Later it was revealed that his hamstring was the culprit, leading to an early dismissal. There were no clear updates after the game concerning severity or timelines, but one would have to assume that a trip to the Injured List could cost him the rest of the season. The Mariners will likely give us updates soon, possibly even as soon as today after they examine him and he undergoes the announced MRI that will be happening today.
TJ Friedl – OF Cincinnati Reds (medical)
Friedl was short of breath on Saturday, prompting an early removal from the game and a trip to a local medical facility. One day later he came back to the clubhouse to reveal that all was well and that he just needed some time to check things out and ensure that his health was not in jeopardy. The only scary part is that there was no reason given for what prompted these feelings, so the hope is that this is a one-time thing and that he can move forward with his career and his life.
Jonathan India – 2B Cincinnati Reds (elbow)
From Reds: India left the game with left elbow discomfort
If Jonathan India left a game, I can tell you this — discomfort is probably the wrong word. Dude has played through so much. He’s hats some serious pain
— C. Trent Rosecrans (@ctrent) September 8, 2024
It remains to be seen if this injury is enough to warrant a trip to the Injured List, but from the sounds of things, India is battling through a bunch of injuries. One has to wonder if a day or two off will be enough to get him back into the lineup and avoid the Injure List altogether.
Hunter Greene – SP Cincinnati Reds (elbow)
With this plan in place, the team also said that they would like to see Greene back on the mound and pitching for them around September 20 or 21 versus the Pirates, which would put him in line for two starts before the end of the season. It remains to be seen if that will indeed happen given how much has to happen first.
Jeffrey Springs – SP Tampa Bay Rays (elbow)
The Tampa Bay Rays have placed LHP Jeffrey Springs on the 15-day injured list (retro to 9/5) with left elbow fatigue and recalled LHP Tyler Alexander from triple-A Durham.
— Rays Communications (@RaysPR) September 8, 2024
There is a legitimate chance that this ends his season, given the timing of the injury and his importance to the team’s future. If so, his season would end with a mixed bag of results. He remains a good buy-low option for next season given how good he’s been in the past.
Ha-Seong Kim – INF San Diego Padres (shoulder)
Ha-Seong Kim is “not as close as we’d like,” Mike Shildt said. Kim tried throwing across the diamond at full strength yesterday and continued to experience shoulder discomfort.
— AJ Cassavell (@AJCassavell) September 8, 2024
If the Padres are to not only make the playoffs but advance along in them, Kim is an important piece to the puzzle there. As such, the team would be wise to wait on him and allow him the opportunity to be as healthy as possible. As such, his playing time down the stretch may be limited, as his inability to throw across the diamond will be a telling tale as to how healthy he is.
Jacob deGrom – SP Texas Ranges (elbow)
deGrominant again! 🔥
Jacob deGrom is done in Frisco after:

In what was likely his final rehab outing, deGrom dominated yet again and looked as good as ever. His next steps are yet to be announced, but before this game, manager Bruce Bochy did say that Saturday’s game might be his final tune-up.
Max Scherzer – SP Texas Rangers (shoulder)
Max Scherzer lost a bit of his command in the fourth inning, but other than that, yeah he seems ready. pic.twitter.com/ynvXaGcy15
— Shawn McFarland (@McFarland_Shawn) September 8, 2024
Other than a walk and a HBP, Scherzer mowed down the competition in his latest rehab start. He believes he’s healthy and thus, he will likely be reinstated soon.
Carlos Correa – SS Minnesota Twins (foot)

— FOX Sports: MLB (@MLBONFOX) September 7, 2024
With only a few weeks left in the season, time is running out for Correa to return and make an impact on your fantasy teams. THat being said, it’s good to hear that he feels as good as ever.
J.T. Realmuto – C Philadelphia Phillies (knee)
J.T. Realmuto said his bruised left knee feels "much better today than yesterday." He could play again in a day or two. But the #Phillies will place Edmundo Sosa on the 10-day injured list with back spasms, Rob Thomson said. Also, Bryce Harper will DH; Kyle Schwarber in LF today.
— Scott Lauber (@ScottLauber) September 8, 2024
From the sounds of things, Realmuto is looking like a candidate to return in the early stages of this week, making it a good idea to insert him into your lineups.
Kyle Tucker – OF Houston Astros (shin)
The Astros worked out Kyle Tucker in right field prior to today's game.
"He looks OK," manager Joe Espada said. "Hopefully we can get him out in right field [in a game] in the next few days. That's the goal. He's getting closer."
— Brian McTaggart (@brianmctaggart) September 8, 2024
Tucker has yet to play the outfield since returning, thus indicating that he’s not quite yet at 100% health. It’s good to see that they have a plan in place and think that he’s just about there.
Jeff McNeail – 2B New York Mets (wrist)
Jeff McNeil is out for the rest of the year because of wrist fracture, Carlos Mendoza said.
— Will Sammon (@WillSammon) September 7, 2024
An unfortunate development for Mcneil who struggled at times this year. There was no word on whether Luisangel Acuna would be up to replace McNeil anytime soon because the team wants their highly-rated prospect to receive everyday playing time in his development.
