Welcome to the Fantrax MLB Injury Report for Wednesday, September 10, 2024. In today’s edition, Luis Castillo heads to the Injured List, Kyle Schwarber heads to the locker room early, and both Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer head back to the mound for a triumphant return. All of that and so much more in today’s Injury Report from Fantrax.
MLB Injury Report
Luis Castillo – SP Seattle Mariners (hamstring)
Luis Castillo is dealing with a grade two hamstring strain, per @Mariners GM Justin Hollander.
Hope is that he can be back after 15 days.
“He could be ready by the time the 15 days are up, he’s a fast healer, he felt stronger and better already today.”#TridentsUp

Castillo injured his hamstring on the weekend, and yesterday it was announced that he would be placed on the Injured List with a grade 2 hamstring strain. There is no timeline in place, and the team believes that he will be ready to pitch again before the season ends, but time is running out. With about three weeks left in the season, he has room for possibly one start, but he cannot have any setbacks. That being said, the team made it sound like he was placed on the Injured List more as a formality because he won’t be able to make his start. It will be interesting to see if those sentiments do come to fruition, but for now, consider him a hold if you have the spot on the Injured List and a drop if you don’t have the room.

Schwarber is considered DTD here, though the problem stems from exactly where it was hit on the back part of the elbow. The good news is that it’s just a contusion, with no structural damage, and nothing is broken. With October being the team’s main focus here and an eight-game lead on the Braves, it will be interesting to see if the team pushes for a return as soon as possible, or if they take their time.
Texas Rangers – Team Update
The Rangers’ rotation to start the series against Seattle, per Bruce Bochy.
Thursday: Kumar Rocker
Friday: Jacob deGrom
Saturday: Max Scherzer— Shawn McFarland (@McFarland_Shawn) September 10, 2024
It’s going to be a celebratory weekend for Texas, as they welcome back both Jacob deGrom (elbow) and Max Scherzer (shoulder) to their rotation. Be prepared.
Reynaldo Lopez – SP Atlanta Braves (shoulder)
Reynaldo López said he’s day to day for now. Tests tonight came back clean but he’ll get an MRI tomorrow here. He seemed to be in decent spirits.
— Justin Toscano (@JustinCToscano) September 11, 2024
Lopez left last night’s game with shoulder tightest after just one inning of work. His velocity was down a considerable amount which triggered the idea that something was wrong. We should know more today after the team’s MRI, but the hope is that he can return soon enough to help the Braves keep the final Wild Card spot. That being said, there aren’t many teams that have been as snake-bitten as the Braves this year, so knowing their luck, this could be something more.
Reese Olson – SP Detroit Tigers (shoulder)
Reese Olson will return to Detroit after his 2nd rehab start with Toledo.
Hinch: "We'll determine what's next for him. It could be another start in Triple-A, or another plan. We haven't seen him in 10 days, so I'd like to sit down and see how he feels."
— Evan Woodbery (@evanwoodbery) September 10, 2024
Of note, Olson tossed three scoreless innings of baseball in his latest rehab start and fired off five strikeouts in the process, despite just working his way up to 45 pitches. It will be interesting to see what they decide to do with their young ace.
San Francisco Giants – Team Update
Jordan Hicks will throw 25-30 pitches with San Jose tonight. Robbie Ray will throw a 50-60 pitch bullpen in SF tomorrow.
— Shayna Rubin (@ShaynaRubin) September 10, 2024
Jordan Hicks (shoulder) wound up throwing two scoreless innings with two strikeouts in what should be considered a successful rehab debut, as long as his velocity was within a reasonable range. As for Robbie Ray (hamstring), today will be a big day for him to see if his body can handle the workload. If so, he may avoid a rehab appearance altogether and return to the Giants afterward.
Lawrence Butler – OF Oakland Athletics (virus)
Lawrence Butler is dealing with a virus that has been going around the clubhouse, per Kotsay. A’s wanted to give him the day off today and hope he can bounce back for tomorrow.
— Martín Gallegos (@MartinJGallegos) September 10, 2024
Butler, alongside other A’s players, may miss some time in the near future. We’ve seen some viruses hold players out for days, and the hope here is that Butler can return as soon as possible.
Los Angeles Angels – Team Update
The Angels announced that closer Ben Joyce is going on the IL with shoulder inflammation.
He hadn’t pitched in a while, and it was curious he didn’t pitch last night.
Anthony Rendon is also going back on the IL.
— Sam Blum (@SamBlum3) September 10, 2024
Ben Joyce (shoulder) will head to the Injured List with an injury that will likely end his season. He is a big part of the team’s future and because he throws hard, the Angels will likely ensure his long-term health by slow-playing any return to the mound. As for Anthony Rendon (oblique), his disastrous season is likely coming to an end here, though his reign of terror on the Angels salary cap will continue in 2025.
Tyler Glasnow – SP Los Angeles Dodgers (elbow)
#Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Tyler Glasnow’s bullpen went well and now he expects him to throw 2-3 simulated innings in Atlanta this weekend.
— Juan Toribio (@juanctoribio) September 10, 2024
Glasnow continues to slow progress here, though with not much time left on the schedule, he may be right on course for a postseason return back to the Dodgers’ rotation. If the simulated innings work out well for him this weekend, he may return to the team and build his arm back up within the context of shorter performances in-game.
Ke’Bryan Hayes – 3B Pittsburgh Pirates (back)
Manager Derek Shelton on his weekly 93.7 The Fan radio show said as of right now, offseason back surgery is not on the table for Ke’Bryan Hayes
Focus is currently on strengthening Hayes’ back. He has yet to do baseball activities since landing on the IL
— Andrew Destin (@AndrewDestin1) September 10, 2024
While surgery is off the table right now, it is something that will likely be discussed in the offseason by both the team and Hayes himself. It will be an interesting winter for the talented young third-baseman who just cannot stay healthy when it comes to his back.
