We are now starting to see who is real and who is a pretender at the tight end position. With two weeks done, we can now get a better picture of the tight end streamers and sleepers for Week 3 of the fantasy football season. I wish I could include Kyle Pitts on this list because he is going to smash this week. I wish I could have Dalton Kincaid who should be a streamer but everyone has him as a weekly starter no matter how middle-of-the-road he is. Let’s give you three tight end streamers and sleepers for Week 3.
Week 3 Tight End Sleepers and Streamers
Streamers
Chig Okonkwo
I know what you are thinking. We have been here before. Yes, we have and we will probably be back here again this season. Chig Okonkwo is the perfect tight end streamer for Week 3. When it comes to fantasy football you are looking for two things. A good matchup and involvement in the offense. When it comes to the matchup I like what the Green Bay Packers have been giving up to the tight end position. In Week 2 the Indianapolis Colts deployed a three-headed tight end attack. Combined they totaled three receptions for 43 yards. I expect Chig Okonkwo to see most of that in Week 3.
In terms of involvement in the offense, the third-year tight end has five targets over two games and has caught all of them. We are still waiting for quarterback Will Levis to show us the skills that had him as a possible first round pick two drafts ago. If he can continue to mature and develop then Okonkwo will continue to be involved. If you are looking for a tight end streamer for Week 3, Chig should be in consideration.
Hunter Henry
While Jacoby Brissett isn’t a top-of-the-line quarterback what he is, is a solid passer who has favored his tight ends. Hunter Henry had 12 targets in Week 2. The Patriots will eventually make the switch to Drake Maye but I don’t think Week 3 is that week. Henry is a solid veteran tight end who provides a solid, sure-handed option for whoever is under center. He is leading the team in routes run. As the wide receiver corp continues to rotate Henry will be the constant.
He plays the New York Jets in Week 3. As a tight end streamer, I would ideally want a better matchup. The Jets have yet to give up more than 40 yards to a tight end and that was to George Kittle in Week 1. They have given up five or more targets in each of the past two weeks. What is exciting about the matchup is the Jets’ ability to score which means passing should be a focus for the Patriots and keeping Hunter Henry involved.
Dalton Schultz
Dalton Schultz is on the border between tight end starter and tight end streamer. I think his down performances so far for your fantasy football team have you questioning him in your lineup. While the Houston Texans have spread the ball around and Schultz has only seen three targets in each game, it is still a high-powered offense that has thrown the ball over 30 times in each game. When looking for a tight end streamer I’ll take a player on a high-powered offense. Obviously, if they were great they would be a weekly starter, which is what you were expecting from Dalton Schultz.
The matchup for Schultz has some positive upside as well. He will be playing the Minnesota Vikings. They just got torched by George Kittle who had 7 receptions for 76 yards and a score. The 49ers are a team like the Texans who have a deep receiving group and spread the ball out. We could see Dalton Schultz be a solid tight end streamer for Week 3. Perhaps he will get back to being a weekly starter.
Sleepers
Ja’Tavion Sanders
I’m not sure I have the stones to put Ja’Tavion Sanders into my lineup but if you are looking for a tight end sleeper for Week 3, you might just be surprised. While Tommy Tremble returned this past week and saw more targets than Sanders, I think the offense needs a spark and a change. I think Sanders can be part of that change and spark. As a big, tall, and fast tight end, he has the potential to be special.
Going against the Las Vegas Raiders, Sanders has a chance to shine. They have been beaten badly by Mark Andrews in Week 2 and were not great against Hayden Hurst of the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 1. The Raiders are an interesting team that has been a shocking surprise so there is potential for a game where the Panthers are in a neutral or passing game script.
Jonnu Smith
There are a ton of questions surrounding the Miami Dolphins offense heading into Week 3. With Tua Tagovialoa out with a concussion and Snoop Connor signing on to be the backup to Skylar Thompson we don’t know what the passing game will look like. What I do like is that inexperienced quarterbacks often struggle reading defenses and need a safety valve. That often can be the tight end. That’s where Jonnu Smith comes in. He shinned in Week 2 with six receptions for 53 yards.
He now faces the Seattle Seahawks. A team that is bottom third in points surrendered to the tight end according to CBSsports. When you are looking for a tight end sleeper for Week 3 you have to like that type of matchup. The previously mentioned Hunter Henry had a great game against the Seahawks in Week 2 so Jonnu Smith can do that in Week 3.
Foster Moreau
Listen the New Orleans Saints can’t continue to score on every possession they have. BUT, I’m willing to ride this train till it derails. You have to like Foster Moreau as a Week 3 tight end sleeper. First off he has played on over 75% of the team’s snaps both weeks this season. He had four receptions in Week 1 and while he was kept off the stat sheet in Week 2 that was a tough matchup against the Dallas Cowboys
Week 3 he gets the Philadelphia Eagles. They only gave up 37 yards to the Packers’ duo of tight ends. It’s a risky play but that’s what you get when you ride with the Saints and go looking for a tight end sleeper. I believe Moreau is better than Juwan Johnson at least for this week. Johnson is still getting back from an injury that held him out during the preseason. Moreau is a good blocker and ran more routes than Johnson in Week 1.
